Snapping Graph Drawings to the Grid Optimally
In geographic information systems and in the production of digital maps for
small devices with restricted computational resources one often wants to round
coordinates to a rougher grid. This removes unnecessary detail and reduces
space consumption as well as computation time. This process is called snapping
to the grid and has been investigated thoroughly from a computational-geometry
perspective. In this paper we investigate the same problem for given drawings
of planar graphs under the restriction that their combinatorial embedding must
be kept and edges are drawn straight-line. We show that the problem is NP-hard
for several objectives and provide an integer linear programming formulation.
Given a plane graph G and a positive integer w, our ILP can also be used to

Compact Grid Representation of Graphs
A graph G is said to be grid locatable if it admits a representation such that vertices are mapped to grid points and edges to line segments that avoid grid points but the extremes. Additionally G is said to be properly embeddable in the grid if it is grid locatable and the segments representing edges do not cross each other. We study the area needed to obtain those representations for some graph families
Algorithms for Stable Matching and Clustering in a Grid
We study a discrete version of a geometric stable marriage problem originally
proposed in a continuous setting by Hoffman, Holroyd, and Peres, in which
points in the plane are stably matched to cluster centers, as prioritized by
their distances, so that each cluster center is apportioned a set of points of
equal area. We show that, for a discretization of the problem to an
grid of pixels with centers, the problem can be solved in time , and we experiment with two slower but more practical algorithms and
a hybrid method that switches from one of these algorithms to the other to gain
greater efficiency than either algorithm alone. We also show how to combine
geometric stable matchings with a -means clustering algorithm, so as to
provide a geometric political-districting algorithm that views distance in
economic terms, and we experiment with weighted versions of stable -means in

Grid Representations and the Chromatic Number
A grid drawing of a graph maps vertices to grid points and edges to line
segments that avoid grid points representing other vertices. We show that there
is a number of grid points that some line segment of an arbitrary grid drawing
must intersect. This number is closely connected to the chromatic number.
Second, we study how many columns we need to draw a graph in the grid,
introducing some new \NP-complete problems. Finally, we show that any planar
graph has a planar grid drawing where every line segment contains exactly two
grid points. This result proves conjectures asked by David Flores-Pe\~naloza
and Francisco Javier Zaragoza Martinez.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
Orderly Spanning Trees with Applications
We introduce and study the {\em orderly spanning trees} of plane graphs. This
algorithmic tool generalizes {\em canonical orderings}, which exist only for
triconnected plane graphs. Although not every plane graph admits an orderly
spanning tree, we provide an algorithm to compute an {\em orderly pair} for any
connected planar graph , consisting of a plane graph of , and an
orderly spanning tree of . We also present several applications of orderly
spanning trees: (1) a new constructive proof for Schnyder's Realizer Theorem,
(2) the first area-optimal 2-visibility drawing of , and (3) the best known
encodings of with O(1)-time query support. All algorithms in this paper run

Drawing planar graphs with prescribed face areas
This thesis deals with planar drawings of planar graphs such that each interior face has
a prescribed area.
Our work is divided into two main sections. The rst one deals with straight-line drawings
and the second one with orthogonal drawings.
For straight-line drawings, it was known that such drawings exist for all planar graphs
with maximum degree 3. We show here that such drawings exist for all planar partial 3-trees,
i.e., subgraphs of a triangulated planar graph obtained by repeatedly inserting a vertex in
one triangle and connecting it to all vertices of the triangle. Moreover, vertices have rational
coordinates if the face areas are rational, and we can bound the resolution.
For orthogonal drawings, we give an algorithm to draw triconnected planar graphs with
maximum degree 3. This algorithm produces a drawing with at most 8 bends per face and
4 bends per edge, which improves the previous known result of 34 bends per face. Both

New Applications of the Nearest-Neighbor Chain Algorithm
The nearest-neighbor chain algorithm was proposed in the eighties as a way to speed up certain hierarchical clustering algorithms. In the first part of the dissertation, we show that its application is not limited to clustering. We apply it to a variety of geometric and combinatorial problems. In each case, we show that the nearest-neighbor chain algorithm finds the same solution as a preexistent greedy algorithm, but often with an improved runtime. We obtain speedups over greedy algorithms for Euclidean TSP, Steiner TSP in planar graphs, straight skeletons, a geometric coverage problem, and three stable matching models. In the second part, we study the stable-matching Voronoi diagram, a type of plane partition which combines properties of stable matchings and Voronoi diagrams. We propose political redistricting as an application. We also show that it is impossible to compute this diagram in an algebraic model of computation, and give three algorithmic approaches to overcome this obstacle. One of them is based on the nearest-neighbor chain algorithm, linking the two parts together
