    Advanced Rotorcraft Transmission (ART) program-Boeing helicopters status report

    The Advanced Rotorcraft Transmission (ART) program is structured to incorporate key emerging material and component technologies into an advanced rotorcraft transmission with the intention of making significant improvements in the state of the art (SOA). Specific objectives of ART are: (1) Reduce transmission weight by 25 pct.; (2) Reduce transmission noise by 10 dB; and (3) Improve transmission life and reliability, while extending Mean Time Between Removal to 5000 hr. Boeing selected a transmission sized for the Tactical Tilt Rotor (TTR) aircraft which meets the Future Air Attack Vehicle (FAVV) requirements. Component development testing will be conducted to evaluate the high risk concepts prior to finalizing the advanced transmission configuration.     John Brown University hosted the 6th annual Disaster Shelter Relief Competition in April 2017 for which the team built a prototype shelter and proposed a camp plan. Both the shelter and the camp plan were designed to house refugees coming into Greece from the Middle East. The shelter would accommodate a family of four and the camp plan was designed to hold 1250 shelters, or 5000 people. The shelter was built on site at John Brown University and was required to take less than two hours to fully construct. This report summarizes the work the team did for the competition, including a review of existing shelter designs currently in use, a description of the method of design of the prototype, validation that the prototype meets the criteria, a discussion of the cultural appropriateness of the shelter to the scenario, suggested modifications and improvements that can be made, photos and drawings of the prototype, and the camp plan

    Guidelines for the Provision of Garbage Reception Facilities at Ports Under MARPOL Annex V

    This report offers guidelines for the provision of adequate port reception facilities for vessel-generated garbage under the requirements of Annex V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, 1973 (MARPOL 73/78), Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships. MARPOL Annex V prohibits at-sea disposal of plastic materials from vessels, and specifies the distance from shore at which other materials may be dumped. Annex V also requires the provision of port reception facilities for garbage, but it does not specify these facilities or how they are to be provided. Since the at-sea dumping restrictions apply to all vessels, the reception facility requirement applies to all ports, terminals, and marinas that serve vessels. These guidelines were prepared to assist port owners and operators in meeting their obligation to provide adequate reception facilities for garbage.     Improving way of Logistics Management in Korean Army

    The objective of this research is to find a way to improve Korean Army Logistics. This is accomplished through interviewing field experts and adopting their ideas to improve it. An interview with the manager of a successful civilian company and relevant literature also gave ideas in improvement. This research is written based on interviews with the logistic officers on different branches and different units in the Korean Army. Through interview with them, this research identified 4 main problems in the current logistics system: 1) multilevel supply support system, 2) inaccurate demand management system, 3) inefficiency of procurement and transportation management, 4) the short of professionalism of logistics officers. The solutions about the identified problems are acquired by an investigation of the relevant literature, telephone interviews with Army logistics personnel and an interview with a leading private enterprise manager. Four applicable improvements ways are presented: 1) construction of central inventory management system for shortening the customer wait time, 2) simplifying the supply chain by direct purchase by users and units, 3) reducing inventory cost and increase supply rate through applying the Prime Vendor system, 4) establishing an education system and ensuring an education environment. In addition to the above identified problems and solutions, Korea Army Logistic still has other unidentified problems. These things can be identified and improvements of those can be found in different kinds of units through analyzing their situations

    Urban stormwater carries a number of pathogens, nutrients, heavy metals, sediment, and other contaminants as surface runoff flows over land. The increase in impervious or paved surfaces associated with development in urban areas reduces the natural infiltration of precipitation into the ground. With impervious cover, precipitation collects and carries contaminants before draining into nearby surface waters. Stormwater runoff from paved surfaces in developed areas can degrade downstream waters with both contaminants and increased volumes of water. This publication aims to make information on innovative stormwater treatment technologies more available to New Hampshire’s urban planners, developers, and communities. Traditional runoff management techniques such as detention basins and infiltration swales may be preferable, but are not always practical for treating urban stormwater. Lack of space for natural solutions is often a problem in existing developed areas, making innovative treatment technologies an attractive alternative. Mostly designed for subsurface installation, urban “retrofits” use less space than conventional methods to treat stormwater. This manual provides information on the innovative stormwater “retrofit” technologies currently available for use in developed areas in New Hampshire

    Solution techniques for a crane sequencing problem

    In shipyards and power plants, relocating resources (items) from existing positions to newly assigned locations are costly and may represent a significant portion of the overall project budget. Since the crane is the most popular material handling equipment for relocating bulky items, it is essential to develop a good crane route to ensure efficient utilization and lower cost. In this research, minimizing the total travel and loading/unloading costs for the crane to relocate resources in multiple time periods is defined as the crane sequencing problem (CSP). In other words, the objective of the CSP is to find routes such that the cost of crane travel and resource loading/unloading is minimized. However, the CSP considers the capacities of locations and intermediate drops (i.e., preemptions) during a multiple period planning horizon. Therefore, the CSP is a unique problem with many applications and is computationally intractable. A mathematical model is developed to obtain optimal solutions for small size problems. Since large size CSPs are computationally intractable, construction algorithms as well as improvement heuristics (e.g., simulated annealing, hybrid ant systems and tabu search heuristics) are proposed to solve the CSPs. Two sets of test problems with different problem sizes are generated to test the proposed heuristics.
