Klipsun Magazine, 2008, Volume 39, Issue 02 - Fall
As we ring in the New Year resolutions are on everyoneâs mind. We set goals to strive for greatness and to improve our relationships, but with all of our attention focused elsewhere we can often forget to reserve a little time and energy for ourselves.
This issue of Klipsun is all about your mind, body and spirit and improving connections between the three. With a healthy mind we are happier, with a healthy body we are stronger and with a healthy spirit we can abolish any obstacles in our path.
So embrace this New Year and follow your bliss.https://cedar.wwu.edu/klipsun_magazine/1245/thumbnail.jp
What am I? Virtual Machines and the Mind/Body Problem
When your word processor or email program is running on your computer, this creates a "virtual machineâ that manipulates windows, files, text, etc. What is this virtual machine, and what are the virtual objects it manipulates? Many standard arguments in the philosophy of mind have exact analogues for virtual machines and virtual objects, but we do not want to draw the wild metaphysical conclusions that have sometimes tempted philosophers in the philosophy of mind. A computer file is not made of epiphenomenal ectoplasm. I argue instead that virtual objects are "supervenient objects". The stereotypical example of supervenient objects is the statue and the lump of clay. To this end I propose a theory of supervenient objects. Then I turn to persons and mental states. I argue that my mental states are virtual states of a cognitive virtual machine implemented on my body, and a person is a supervenient object supervening on his cognitive virtual machine

Mind and Body
This piece focuses on the connection of the mind and body. Neither is separate and both affect each other. Physical health can affect your mental health and vice versa, as the body is a connected system inside and out. As someone who suffers from chronic physical pains as well as diagnosed anxiety that feels like an unbearable mental pain, this artwork incases the feeling of being overloaded by the painful sensations. Sometimes, a bad mental state can cause physical damage and bad physical health can negatively affect your mental health. With that, I have learned that when trying to heal, you must focus not only one the physical aspect, but healing your mind as well.
When dealing with such extreme pains that can often present a challenge in life, I have learned that it is okay to reach to others for help. This is portrayed in the black shadow figure that is lifting the person in pain up. This shadow symbolizes family, friends, and others who are always there to help support me when I need it.
The blue color was used throughout this piece to represent a sadness that comes with pain. When the mind is hurting, it feels like the worst kind of pain, which is why the head has the darkest blue. This darkness fades into a lighter blue in order to show the hope of healing as your mind and body work together, and you lean on people around you for help. There are different symbols throughout the piece. In the body, there are pain points represented by the star like shapes. These areas are all the places I feel physical pain. The head has different symbols, that show the mind can experience pain that is different, yet similar

Let's P.L.A.Y. A Memoir of a Master
Have you ever wanted to escape the limitations of what your brain thinks you are capable of? Well, lets P.L.A.Y, Performance Living Actively in You! Enter with me into a rehearsal process where perfection is replaced with discovery; where creation need not be tied to rhyme or reason. Leave the critical adult mind behind and jump into the body-your personal vehicle to this imaginary world!Through my artistic experience acting in A Beautiful Day in November, I found that full body expression is where PLAY lives, in the world of a play. Playing with the body, and without the critical and intellectual brain, allows the actor to expand and discover their character beyond initial ideas or basic pretenses. The utilization of P.L.A.Y., is not only useful in absurdist works, like A Beautiful Day in November, but I also found it extremely freeing in the classroom, classical texts, and stage productions.I was able to apply Checkovâs technique onstage in Man in Love, and use full body expression as a gateway to tapping into an internal feeling. By tapping into the physical sensation of falling, my body took inventory of the feeling of losing control. I was able to transmute that physical feeling into an emotional fear that was outwardly expressed onstage in my character Darylnnâs agoraphobia. In classical work, such as Shakespeare, I found that heightened text is best understood, for both myself and audiences, when executed with full body expression. By metabolizing words into a physical expression, my body removes language as a barrier to the comprehension of storytelling. My process to discovery changed once I got my body involved. Before then, I was a captive to the limitations of my mind with no idea of my capacity to be a chameleon of an actress. Through graduate school, I have found that there is no story that my body cannot lead me through
Roots and wings
Certain experiences happen to you during your early teen years. Some of them you never think of again, others affect for the rest of your life. Itâs the awkward time between childhood and adulthood, when your body and mind begin to develop into whatever it is you will become. The friends you make during these years will be your oldest and dearest. They will share both your innocence and your awakening, and you theirs. I passed through this period in the late 1960s and early 1970s, an era of remarkable social, political, and moral change. But at the time, I thought it was only me

These three are important in the prevention of disease and promotion of ideal health. According to Ayurveda, to maintain a healthy and disease free life everyone should follow a daily routine mentioned in Ayurveda texts. Vyayama (physical exercise) is an important regimen explained in the context of Dinacharya. Vyayama plays key role in the maintenance of health and prevention of disease. Ayurveda suggests that a daily routine of proper physical activity, affects not only your body, but has a positive influence on your mind, emotions, senses and spirit. The benefits of Vyayama are achieved as you focus on your chosen activity in awareness of your breathing, physical responses, and sense of well-being. When you exercise according to Ayurvedic tradition, your energy and vitality are enhanced by the appropriate demands placed on your body and you are left with a feeling of joy
