    Periodicity detection and its application in lifelog data

    Wearable sensors are catching our attention not only in industry but also in the market. We can now acquire sensor data from different types of health tracking devices like smart watches, smart bands, lifelog cameras and most smart phones are capable of tracking and logging information using built-in sensors. As data is generated and collected from various sources constantly, researchers have focused on interpreting and understanding the semantics of this longitudinal multi-modal data. One challenge is the fusion of multi-modal data and achieving good performance on tasks such activity recognition, event detection and event segmentation. The classical approach to process the data generated by wearable sensors has three main parts: 1) Event segmentation 2) Event recognition 3) Event retrieval. Many papers have been published in each of the three fields. This thesis has focused on the longitudinal aspect of the data from wearable sensors, instead of concentrating on the data over a short period of time. The following aspects are several key research questions in the thesis. Does longitudinal sensor data have unique features than can distinguish the subject generating the data from other subjects ? In other words, from the longitudinal perspective, does the data from different subjects share more common structure/similarity/identical patterns so that it is difficult to identify a subject using the data. If this is the case, what are those common patterns ? If we are able to eliminate those similarities among all the data, does the data show more specific features that we can use to model the data series and predict the future values ? If there are repeating patterns in longitudinal data, we can use different methods to compute the periodicity of the recurring patterns and furthermore to identify and extract those patterns. Following that we could be able to compare local data over a short time period with more global patterns in order to show the regularity of the local data. Some case studies are included in the thesis to show the value of longitudinal lifelog data related to a correlation of health conditions and training performance

    Volume IV is devoted to examining the medical and associated organizational measures used to maintain the health of space crews and to support their performance before, during, and after space flight. These measures, collectively known as the medical flight support system, are important contributors to the safety and success of space flight. The contributions of space hardware and the spacecraft environment to flight safety and mission success are covered in previous volumes of the Space Biology and Medicine series. In Volume IV, we address means of improving the reliability of people who are required to function in the unfamiliar environment of space flight as well as the importance of those who support the crew. Please note that the extensive collaboration between Russian and American teams for this volume of work resulted in a timeframe of publication longer than originally anticipated. Therefore, new research or insights may have emerged since the authors composed their chapters and references. This volume includes a list of authors' names and addresses should readers seek specifics on new information. At least three groups of factors act to perturb human physiological homeostasis during space flight. All have significant influence on health, psychological, and emotional status, tolerance, and work capacity. The first and most important of these factors is weightlessness, the most specific and radical change in the ambient environment; it causes a variety of functional and structural changes in human physiology. The second group of factors precludes the constraints associated with living in the sealed, confined environment of spacecraft. Although these factors are not unique to space flight, the limitations they entail in terms of an uncomfortable environment can diminish the well-being and performance of crewmembers in space. The third group of factors includes the occupational and social factors associated with the difficult, critical nature of the crewmembers' work: the risks involved in space flight, changes in circadian rhythms, and intragroup interactions. The physical and emotional stress and fatigue that develop under these conditions also can disturb human health and performance. In addition to these factors, the risk also exists that crewmembers will develop various illnesses during flight. The risk of illness is no less during space flight than on Earth, and may actually be greater for some classes of diseases

    The Shadow Space of Allegorical Machines: Situating Locative Media

    This dissertation utilizes a media archaeological approach to the analysis of locative media, which are technologies that organize an experience of spatial orientation. For instance, a user can use a mobile phone to connect to a cellular network and generate a visualization of the material space in which he or she is positioned with annotated or interactive information on the screen. My critical approach to locative media is influenced by a historical constellation of orientation technologies, their contributions to the social imaginations of space, and the resulting experiences and expectations that are negotiated by the material, symbolic, and ideal. Four case studies on the astrolabe, magnetic compass, divining rod, and digital locative media make up a broader historical arrangement of which, I argue, digital locative media are the latest manifestation. Like other media technologies such as radio or television, these spatial technologies offer a window onto another world while also offering (other)spaces of symbolic and cultural codes that are layered over material space. The ability to reveal these otherspaces is associated with the recurring transcendent logic of locative media as individuals are encouraged to unveil the real behind the apparent in order to become united with a hybrid (and enchanted) ecology of the virtual and real. My locative media archaeology involves a theorization of allegorical machines, which is a term I use to analyze the interfaced interpretation of a shadow (imagined or informational) otherspace in relation to a porous correspondence between subject and space. This theorization is an interrogation of how engineers, technological promoters, and users position allegorical machines as making the supersensible sensible through an interface with the sublime. In other words, locative media are technological attempts to make the vague intelligible by bringing what lies outside the realm of physical experience into contact with the senses. Transcending to otherspaces such as the electromagnetic spectrum or the digital network involves an inherent metaphysics of the interface, which as liaisons between bodies and spaces generate animations such as the one that is the focus of this dissertation: the sublime desire or fear of unveiling the unknown space beyond space.Doctor of Philosoph

    Electronic Monitoring Systems for Hand Hygiene in Hospitals: Relationship to Practice and Exploration of Clinical Perceptions

    Appropriate hand hygiene at the five evidence-based moments proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) during the delivery of patient care by healthcare workers (HCWs) is crucial in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections. Audits of hand hygiene are required by health and social care regulators and organisations to provide assurance of practice. Compliance with hand hygiene is frequently low and electronic monitoring systems (EMSs) offer a potential way of generating data to inform improvement to practice which avoids some of the drawbacks of auditing via direct observation. It is important that these electronic systems generate data which is reflective of the reality of frontline practice in terms of the occurrence of opportunities for hand hygiene. Therefore, this mixed methods research aimed to fill a key gap in this field by developing a denominator for hand hygiene based on the average number of opportunities on inpatient wards in England. This was achieved via observations of the provision of care by frontline HCWs on two wards. In addition, compliance data captured during observations of care was compared with data from an EMS running concurrently on the wards. Following this, the second phase of the research explored the findings from the observation phase through interviews with frontline HCWs. Interview topics included the practical application of the five moments for hand hygiene, the role of audit in driving practice, the potential role of EMSs, and the impact on hand hygiene behaviour of the COVID-19 pandemic. This data can not only be used to inform a denominator for EMSs but also provides additional knowledge of the burden of hand hygiene for HCWs. Further to this, interviews revealed some of the key challenges and common issues which arise when applying hand hygiene in the dynamic hospital environment. It was found that during the COVID-19 pandemic the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and motivation of self-protection created barriers to effective hand hygiene practice. This thesis provides insight into the perceived value and trustworthiness of data gathered during direct audit of practice, bringing its usefulness into debate. With triggers to audit, and greater staff engagement, often seen as a reactive response to an outbreak of infection rather than an ongoing process of embedded preventative practices. Of particular interest was how EMSs may be accepted as an adjunct to, not a replacement of, existing audit practice

    This thesis explores the benefits and disadvantages for human occupants living within intelligent buildings and responsive environments that have developed the autonomy and the ability to make their own intelligent decisions and act on those choices in our place. The thesis is split into two parts. The first half is a discussion of collected research material. It discusses the balance between deskilling and augmenting the skill of individuals as we continue to delegate more mental and physical effort away from our own bodies through our co-evolution with technology. It examines how to maintain human agency within autonomous environments as they become more capable but unpredictable. Finally, it seeks an equilibrium between the need for human privacy and the need for autonomous environments to observe to act intelligently. Through this analysis, it speculates on the eventual form a human-built environment crowded with artificial minds may take; and it describes the potential need for conversational and autobiographical agents to act as intermediaries between the rest of an intelligent environment and its human occupants. In addition to impacts on our own agency, this thesis also discusses the agency of the built environment itself, its moral responsibilities, and what moral consideration it may deserve. The second half of the thesis is a science fiction short story that applies the discussion of the first half of the thesis. This story is inspired by the value of using speculative stories to contemplate future social change and by the narrative form this thesis proposes machine interfaces will eventually take. This story describes a conversation between a mistrustful man burned by the past and an intelligent environment’s artificial caretaker that seeks to regain his approval

    Pattern recognition is a very wide research field. It involves factors as diverse as sensors, feature extraction, pattern classification, decision fusion, applications and others. The signals processed are commonly one, two or three dimensional, the processing is done in real- time or takes hours and days, some systems look for one narrow object class, others search huge databases for entries with at least a small amount of similarity. No single person can claim expertise across the whole field, which develops rapidly, updates its paradigms and comprehends several philosophical approaches. This book reflects this diversity by presenting a selection of recent developments within the area of pattern recognition and related fields.     This paper showcases examples of bottom–up open data and smart city applications and identifies lessons for future such efforts. Examples include Changify, a neighbourhood-based platform for residents, businesses, and companies; Open Sensors, which provides APIs to help businesses, startups, and individuals develop applications for the Internet of Things; and Cybersalon’s Hackney Treasures. a location-based mobile app that uses Wikipedia entries geolocated in Hackney borough to map notable local residents. Other experiments with sensors and open data by Cybersalon members include Ilze Black and Nanda Khaorapapong's The Breather, a "breathing" balloon that uses high-end, sophisticated sensors to make air quality visible; and James Moulding's AirPublic, which measures pollution levels. Based on Cybersalon's experience to date, getting data to the people is difficult, circuitous, and slow, requiring an intricate process of leadership, public relations, and perseverance. Although there are myriad tools and initiatives, there is no one solution for the actual transfer of that data
