    Cutting and Fracturing Models without Remeshing

    Abstract. A finite element simulation framework for cutting and fracturing model without remeshing is presented. The main idea of proposed method is adding a discontinuous function for the standard approximation to account for the crack. A feasible technique is adopted for dealing with multiple cracks and intersecting cracks. Several involved problems including extended freedoms of finite element nodes as well as mass matrix calculation are discussed. The presented approach is easy to simulate object deformation while changing topology. Moreover, previous methods developed in standard finite element framework, such as the stiffness warping method, can be extended and utilized

We discuss how these engines can be used for simulated surgical training applications, determine their shortcomings and make suggestions how game engines can be extended to make them more suitable for such applications

    Connective Tissues Simulation on GPU

    International audienceRecent work in the field of medical simulation have led to real advances in the mechanical simulation of organs. However, it is important to notice that, despite the major role they may have in the interaction between organs, the connective tissues are often left out of these simulations. In this paper, we propose a model which can rely on either a mesh based or a meshless methods. To provide a realistic simulation of these tissues, our work is based on the weak form of continuum mechanics equations for hyperelastic soft materials. Furthermore, the stability of deformable objects simulation is ensured by an implicit temporal integration scheme. Our method allows to model these tissues without prior assumption on the dimension of their of their geometry (curve, surface or volume), and enables mechanical coupling between organs. To obtain an interactive frame rate, we develop a parallel version suitable for to GPU computation. Finally we demonstrate the proper convergence of our finite element scheme

    Virtual reality surgery simulation: A survey on patient specific solution

    For surgeons, the precise anatomy structure and its dynamics are important in the surgery interaction, which is critical for generating the immersive experience in VR based surgical training applications. Presently, a normal therapeutic scheme might not be able to be straightforwardly applied to a specific patient, because the diagnostic results are based on averages, which result in a rough solution. Patient Specific Modeling (PSM), using patient-specific medical image data (e.g. CT, MRI, or Ultrasound), could deliver a computational anatomical model. It provides the potential for surgeons to practice the operation procedures for a particular patient, which will improve the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment, thus enhance the prophetic ability of VR simulation framework and raise the patient care.     Virtual reality (VR), as a novel technology, represents one of the most powerful tools to assist or even play the major role in many areas, such as development of new designs, training medical practitioners or assembly operators, entertaining industry, etc. On the other hand, the finite element method (FEM) imposed itself as an essential technical support for the needs of computing flexible bodies’ deformational behavior. FEM together with CAD are important ingredients of VR. In the VR applications that imply interactive simulations with flexible bodies included, the efficiency of FEM formulations is of crucial importance. The paper presents a co-rotational FEM-formulation developed to meet the needs of simulating geometrically nonlinear deformational behavior at interactive frame rates. It is presented here in combination with a rather simple linear tetrahedral element. The formulation is enriched with a coupled-mesh technique to enable the usage of rougher FEM models to compute deformational behavior of complex geometries. The advantages of an iterative solver and the solution procedure for both static and dynamic analyses are discussed.Virtualna stvarnost (VR), kao nova tehnologija, predstavlja jednu od najmoćnijih alatki koje podržavaju rad ili čak igraju glavnu ulogu u mnogim područjima, kao što su razvoj novih dizajna, trening liječnika ili montažera, industrija zabave, itd. S druge strane, metoda konačnih elemenata (MKE) se nametnula kao osnovna tehnička podrška za potrebe proračunavanja deformacijskog ponašanja elastičnih tijela. MKE je zajedno s CAD-om, važan dio VR-a. U VR aplikacijama koje podrazumijevaju interaktivnu simulaciju s elastičnim tijelima, efikasnost MKE formulacije je od presudne važnosti. Rad predstavlja korotacijsku MKE formulaciju razvijenu s ciljem simuliranja geometrijski nelinearnog ponašanja u interaktivnoj domeni. Formulacija je predstavljena u kombinaciji s vrlo jednostavnim linearnim elementom tipa tetraedra. Formulacija je proširena tehnikom spregnutih mreža kako bi se omogućilo korištenje grubljih MKE modela za određivanje deformacijskog ponašanja složenih geometrija. Razmotrene su prednosti iterativnog solvera kao i procedura rješavanja statičke i dinamičke analize

    Stable Constrained Dynamics

    International audienceWe present a unification of the two main approaches to simulate deformable solids, namely elasticity and constraints. Elasticity accurately handles soft to moderately stiff objects, but becomes numerically hard as stiffness increases. Constraints efficiently handle high stiffness, but when integrated in time they can suffer from instabilities in the nullspace directions, generating spurious transverse vibrations when pulling hard on thin inextensible objects or articulated rigid bodies. We show that geometric stiffness, the tensor encoding the change of force directions (as opposed to intensities) in response to a change of positions, is the missing piece between the two approaches. This previously neglected stiffness term is easy to implement and dramatically improves the stability of inextensible objects and articulated chains, without adding artificial bending forces. This allows time step increases up to several orders of magnitude using standard linear solvers
