    A comparative numerical study of meshing functionals for variational mesh adaptation

    We present a comparative numerical study for three functionals used for variational mesh adaptation. One of them is a generalisation of Winslow's variable diffusion functional while the others are based on equidistribution and alignment. These functionals are known to have nice theoretical properties and work well for most mesh adaptation problems either as a stand-alone variational method or combined within the moving mesh framework. Their performance is investigated numerically in terms of equidistribution and alignment mesh quality measures.     A bioregional classification of the continental shelf of northeastern North America for conservation analysis and planning based on representation

    Understanding how well National Marine Sanctuaries and other marine protected areas represent the diversity of species present within and among the biogeographic regions where they occur is essential for assessing their conservation value and identifying gaps in the protection of biological diversity. One of the first steps in any such assessment should be the development of clearly defined and scientifically justified planning boundaries representing distinct oceanographic conditions and faunal assemblages. Here, we propose a set of boundaries for the continental shelf of northeastern North America defined by subdivisions of the Eastern Temperate Province, based on a review and synthesis (i.e. meta-analysis) of the scientific literature. According to this review, the Eastern Temperate Province is generally divided into the Acadian and Virginian Subprovinces. Broad agreement places the Scotian Shelf, Gulf of Maine, and Bay of Fundy within the Acadian Subprovince. The proper association of Georges Bank is less clear; some investigators consider it part of the Acadian and others part of the Virginian. Disparate perspectives emerge from the analysis of different groups of organisms. Further, while some studies suggest a distinction between the Southern New England shelf and the rest of the Mid-Atlantic Bight, others describe the region as a broad transition zone with no unique characteristics of its own. We suggest there exists sufficient evidence to consider the Scotian Shelf, Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank, Southern New England, and Southern Mid-Atlantic Bight as distinct biogeographic regions from a conservation planning perspective, and present a set of proposed mapped boundaries.     Recent work on suspension flows has shown that contact mechanics plays a role in suspension flow dynamics. The contact mechanics between particulate matter in dispersions should depend sensitively on the composition of the dispersed phase: evidently emulsion droplets interact differently with each other than angular sand particles. We therefore ask: what is the role of contact mechanics in dispersed media flow? We focus on slow flows, where contacts are long-lasting and hence contact mechanics effects should be most visible. To answer our question, we synthesize soft hydrogel particles with different friction coefficients. By making the particles soft, we can drive them at finite confining pressure at all driving rates. For particles with a low friction coefficient, we obtain a rheology similar to that of an emulsion, yet with an effective friction much larger than expected from their microscopic contact mechanics. Increasing the friction coefficient of the particles, we find a flow instability in the suspension. Particle level flow and fluctuations are also greatly affected by the microscopic friction coefficient of the suspended particles. The specific rheology of our "granular emulsions" provides further evidence that a better understanding of microscopic particle interactions is of broad relevance for dispersed media flows

    The Impact of Co-management on the Sundarbans Fisheries: Evidence from Sharankhola, Bagerhat, Bangladesh

    The study was conducted in the Sarankhola, Bagerhat during the period from August to October, 2012 to determine the impact of co-management on the Sundarbans fisheries. At present only one co-management organization is working in the study area. The co-management organization is performing various activities to make fisheries resources of the Sarankhola, Sundarbans sustainable. Co-management initiatives included: awareness raising, alternate income generation, eco-tourism and efforts towards social mobilization. The key regulatory measures and steps of co-management included: Limited Boat License Certificate (BLC), protection of parents hilsa and protection of jatka. Integrated Resources Management Plans (IRMP) was formulated by the Forest Department for sustainable fisheries management of the Sundarbans. IRMP made two major guidelines: One was fisheries resource conservation measures and the other was fisheries improvement measures. Fisheries improvement measures in the study area were weak. The production data revealed that fish production in the Sundarbans is declining in the recent years. It is an important breeding and nursery ground of a wide range of estuarine, offshore and marine fishes and shrimps. Fisheries resource is being degraded due to lack of proper co-management of the resource. So, effective co-management activity is essential for sustainable fisheries resources conservation-management in the Sundarbans.     Fish exploitation and changes in the fish community of Lake George, Uganda

    Unlike Lake Victoria, the fisheries of Lake George have undergone gradual changes in the size and proportion of the major commercial fish species, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus: cichlidae) in the last 40 years (1950-1989). The size decreased from an average weight of 900g in 1950 to 430g in 1989 while percentage contribution in commercial catches during the same period declined from 92% to 36%. The over all annual commercial catches though showed a steady increase from the period 1950 when the fishery was opened to intensive and controlled exploitation, consistently high catches were observed in the 1960s and 1970s followed by a general decline in the early 1980s to amore or less stable fishery in the late 1980s. These changes are attributed to increased fishing pressure especially on the nil tilapia and to increased use of smaller gill net mesh sizes lower than the recommended 127mm mesh. The changes in gill net mesh have brought O. leucostictus, acichlid, into commercial catches confirming that the 88.9mm mesh size nets are used by the commercial fishermen to harvest smaller fish species. The commercial catches are presently dominated by the piscivorous fishes,(over 60%) whose contribution was less than 10% during initial exploitation of the virgin fishery in 1950.The piscivorous fish are mainly caught using hooks and lines. The entire fishery is believed to be exploited close to the maximum. The above trends serve to show the impact of exploitation on fish species diversity. Quantitive and qualitative changes of the major fish species on lake George are due to exploitation pressure unlike Lake Victoria where it is a combination of both exploitations and impact of fish introductions.     Mesh generation for voxel -based objects

    A new physically-based approach to unstructured mesh generation via Monte-Carlo simulation is proposed. Geometrical objects to be meshed are represented by systems of interacting particles with a given interaction potential. A new way of distributing nodes in complex domains is proposed based on a concept of dynamic equilibrium ensemble, which represents a liquid state of matter. The algorithm is simple, numerically stable and produces uniform node distributions in domains of complex geometries and different dimensions. Well-shaped triangles or tetrahedra can be created by connecting a set of uniformly-spaced nodes. The proposed method has many advantages and potential applications.;The new method is applied to the problem of meshing of voxel-based objects. By customizing system potential energy function to reflect surface features, particles can be distributed into desired locations, such as sharp corners and edges. Feature-preserved surface mesh can then be constructed by connecting the node set.;A heuristic algorithm using an advancing front approach is proposed to generate triangulated surface meshes on voxel-based objects. The resultant surface meshes do not inherit the anisotropy of the underlying hexagonal grid. However, the important surface features, such as edges and corners may not be preserved in the mesh.;To overcome this problem, surface features such as edges, corners need to be detected. A new approach of edge capturing is proposed and demonstrated. The approach is based on a Laplace solver with incomplete Jacobi iterations, and as such is very simple and efficient. This edge capturing approach combined with the mesh generation methods above forms a simple and robust technique of unstructured mesh generation on voxel-based objects.;A graphical user interface (GUI) capable of complex geometric design and remote simulation control was implemented. The GUI was used in simulations of large fuel-cell stacks. It enables one to setup, run and monitor simulations remotely through secure shell (SSH2) connections. A voxel-based 3D geometrical modeling module is built along with the GUI. The flexibility of voxel-based geometry representation enables one to use this technique for both geometric design and visualization of volume data
