How to Relax in Stressful Situations: A Smart Stress Reduction System
Stress is an inescapable element of the modern age. Instances of untreated stress may lead to a reduction in the individual's health, well-being and socio-economic situation. Stress management application development for wearable smart devices is a growing market. The use of wearable smart devices and biofeedback for individualized real-life stress reduction interventions has received less attention. By using our unobtrusive automatic stress detection system for use with consumer-grade smart bands, we first detected stress levels. When a high stress level is detected, our system suggests the most appropriate relaxation method by analyzing the physical activity-based contextual information. In more restricted contexts, physical activity is lower and mobile relaxation methods might be more appropriate, whereas in free contexts traditional methods might be useful. We further compared traditional and mobile relaxation methods by using our stress level detection system during an eight day EU project training event involving 15 early stage researchers (mean age 28; gender 9 Male, 6 Female). Participants' daily stress levels were monitored and a range of traditional and mobile stress management techniques was applied. On day eight, participants were exposed to a 'stressful' event by being required to give an oral presentation. Insights about the success of both traditional and mobile relaxation methods by using the physiological signals and collected self-reports were provided
Smart workplaces: a system proposal for stress management
Over the past last decades of contemporary society, workplaces
have become the primary source of many health issues, leading
to mental problems such as stress, depression, and anxiety.
Among the others, environmental aspects have shown to be the
causes of stress, illness, and lack of productivity. With the arrival
of new technologies, especially in the smart workplaces field,
most studies have focused on investigating the building energy
efficiency models and human thermal comfort. However, little has
been applied to occupants’ stress recognition and well-being
overall. Due to this fact, this present study aims to propose a
stress management solution for an interactive design system that
allows the adapting of comfortable environmental conditions
according to the user preferences by measuring in real-time the
environmental and biological characteristics, thereby helping to
prevent stress, as well as to enable users to cope stress when
being stressed. The secondary objective will focus on evaluating
one part of the system: the mobile application. The proposed
system uses several usability methods to identify users’ needs,
behavior, and expectations from the user-centered design
approach. Applied methods, such as User Research, Card
Sorting, and Expert Review, allowed us to evaluate the design
system according to Heuristics Analysis, resulting in improved
usability of interfaces and experience. The study presents the
research results, the design interface, and usability tests.
According to the User Research results, temperature and noise
are the most common environmental stressors among the users
causing stress and uncomfortable conditions to work in, and the
preference for physical activities over the digital solutions for
coping with stress. Additionally, the System Usability Scale (SUS)
results identified that the system’s usability was measured as
“excellent” and “acceptable” with a final score of 88 points out of
the 100. It is expected that these conclusions can contribute to
future investigations in the smart workplaces study field and their
interaction with the people placed there.
Stress and Health
Acute stressful experiences or high levels of chronic stress are risk factors for mental and physical disorders. Insights into the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder and other stress-related disorders experienced by war veterans, refugees, and immigrants are presented. This volume also presents examinations of the pathological effects of stress that may disrupt the normal relationships between individuals and their families. The health of individuals and their children may be enhanced by interventions to help them manage the effects of stressful life experiences and environments. Innovative and effective interventions are examined and their applications are recommended
The Bio-Radar system is capable to measure vital signs accurately, namely
the respiratory and cardiac signal, using electromagnetic waves. In this way,
it is possible to monitor subjects remotely and comfortably for long periods
of time. This system is based on the micro-Doppler effect, which relates
the received signal phase variation with the distance change between the
subject chest-wall and the radar antennas, which occurs due to the cardiopulmonary
function. Considering the variety of applications where this
system can be used, it is required to evaluate its performance when applied
to real context scenarios and thus demonstrate the advantages that bioradar
systems can bring to the general population. In this work, a bio-radar
prototype was developed in order to verify the viability to be integrated in
specific applications, using robust and low profile solutions that equally guarantee
the general system performance while addressing the market needs.
Considering these two perspectives to be improved, different level solutions
were developed. On the hardware side, textile antennas were developed to
be embedded in a car seat upholstery, thus reaching a low profile solution
and easy to include in the industrialization process. Real context scenarios
imply long-term monitoring periods, where involuntary body motion can
occur producing high amplitude signals that overshadow the vital signs.
Non-controlled monitoring environments might also produce time varying
parasitic reflections that have a direct impact in the signal. Additionally,
the subject's physical stature and posture during the monitoring period can
have a different impact in the signals quality. Therefore, signal processing
algorithms were developed to be robust to low quality signals and non-static
scenarios. On the other hand, the bio-radar potential can also be maximized
if the acquired signals are used pertinently to help identify the subject's psychophysiological state enabling one to act accordingly. The random body
motion until now has been seen as a noisy source, however it can also provide
useful information regarding subject's state. In this sense, the acquired
vital signs as well as other body motions were used in machine learning
algorithms with the goal to identify the subject's emotions and thus verify
if the remotely acquired vital signs can also provide useful information.O sistema Bio-Radar permite medir sinais vitais com precisão, nomeadamente
Considerando
Adicionalmente, a estrutura física
O movimento corporal
