An Improved GPU Simulator For Spiking Neural P Systems
Spiking Neural P (SNP) systems, variants of Psystems (under Membrane and Natural computing), are computing models that acquire abstraction and inspiration from the way neurons 'compute' or process information. Similar to other P system variants, SNP systems are Turing complete models that by nature compute non-deterministically and in a maximally parallel manner. P systems usually trade (often exponential) space for (polynomial to constant) time. Due to this nature, P system variants are currently limited to parallel simulations, and several variants have already been simulated in parallel devices. In this paper we present an improved SNP system simulator based on graphics processing units (GPUs). Among other reasons, current GPUs are architectured for massively parallel computations, thus making GPUs very suitable for SNP system simulation. The computing model, hardware/software considerations, and simulation algorithm are presented, as well as the comparisons of the CPU only and CPU-GPU based simulators.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación TIN2009–13192Junta de Andalucía P08-TIC-0420
Virtual reality training and assessment in laparoscopic rectum surgery
Background: Virtual-reality (VR) based simulation techniques offer an efficient and low cost alternative to conventional surgery training. This article describes a VR training and assessment system in laparoscopic rectum surgery. Methods: To give a realistic visual performance of interaction between membrane tissue and surgery tools, a generalized cylinder based collision detection and a multi-layer mass-spring model are presented. A dynamic assessment model is also designed for hierarchy training evaluation. Results: With this simulator, trainees can operate on the virtual rectum with both visual and haptic sensation feedback simultaneously. The system also offers surgeons instructions in real time when improper manipulation happens. The simulator has been tested and evaluated by ten subjects. Conclusions: This prototype system has been verified by colorectal surgeons through a pilot study. They believe the visual performance and the tactile feedback are realistic. It exhibits the potential to effectively improve the surgical skills of trainee surgeons and significantly shorten their learning curve. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Simulating Spiking Neural P systems without delays using GPUs
We present in this paper our work regarding simulating a type of P system
known as a spiking neural P system (SNP system) using graphics processing units
(GPUs). GPUs, because of their architectural optimization for parallel
computations, are well-suited for highly parallelizable problems. Due to the
advent of general purpose GPU computing in recent years, GPUs are not limited
to graphics and video processing alone, but include computationally intensive
scientific and mathematical applications as well. Moreover P systems, including
SNP systems, are inherently and maximally parallel computing models whose
inspirations are taken from the functioning and dynamics of a living cell. In
particular, SNP systems try to give a modest but formal representation of a
special type of cell known as the neuron and their interactions with one
another. The nature of SNP systems allowed their representation as matrices,
which is a crucial step in simulating them on highly parallel devices such as
GPUs. The highly parallel nature of SNP systems necessitate the use of hardware
intended for parallel computations. The simulation algorithms, design
considerations, and implementation are presented. Finally, simulation results,
observations, and analyses using an SNP system that generates all numbers in

A survey of new technology for cockpit application to 1990's transport aircraft simulators
Two problems were investigated: inter-equipment data transfer, both on board the aircraft and between air and ground; and crew equipment communication via the cockpit displays and controls. Inter-equipment data transfer is discussed in terms of data bus and data link requirements. Crew equipment communication is discussed regarding the availability of CRT display systems for use in research simulators to represent flat panel displays of the future, and of software controllable touch panels
Survey of multi-function display and control technology
The NASA orbiter spacecraft incorporates a complex array of systems, displays and controls. The incorporation of discrete dedicated controls into a multi-function display and control system (MFDCS) offers the potential for savings in weight, power, panel space and crew training time. The technology applicable to the development of a MFDCS for orbiter application is surveyed. Technology thought to be applicable presently or in the next five years is highlighted. Areas discussed include display media, data handling and processing, controls and operator interactions and the human factors considerations which are involved in a MFDCS design. Several examples of applicable MFDCS technology are described
Tactile graphical display for the visually impaired information technology applications
This paper presents an interactive tactile graphical display, for the visually impaired information technology access applications. The display consists of a matrix of dots. Each dot is an electro rheological micro actuator. The actuator design and development process is presented in this paper. Prototype size 124x4 dots was manufactured. An advanced software tools and embedded system based on voltage matrix manipulation has been developed, to provide the display near real time control. The experimental tests carried out into the developed prototype showed that each actuator of the matrix was able to provide a vertical movement of 0.7 mm and vertical holding force of 100 to 200 mN. The stroke and dynamic response tests showed the practicability of the developed tactile display, for the visually impaired information technology applications
A virtual laboratory system for physiology teaching
The problem of understanding physiological processes can be aided by visualization tools. Traditionally this has been achieved by the use of schematic paper diagrams. However, many physiological processes are quite complex, and in many instances students encounter difficulties in understanding the dynamics. This paper describes the rationale behind an alternative approach using interactive three‐dimensional computer‐graphics simulation to aid comprehension of scientific concepts
