    Handling inharmonic series with median-adjustive trajectories

    A new method for the analysis of inharmonic instrumental tones is presented. The method exploits an equation derived from the well-know inharmonic series equation, where the inharmonicity coefficient is balanced with the frequencies and numbers of any two partials extracted from a pseudo-harmonic series. A serial search for increasingly deviating spectral peaks is aided with the integrated refinement of increasingly reliable inharmonicity coefficient and fundamental frequency estimates. This firsthand approach to the problem of evaluating inharmonic spectra brings about an unprecedented level of simplicity, efficiency and accuracy

    The performance of LoRa Geo-location for outdoor tracking purposes has been evaluated on a public LoRaWAN network. Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) localization accuracy, probability and update frequency were evaluated for different trajectories (walking, cycling, driving) and LoRa spreading factors. A median accuracy of 200m was obtained and in 90% of the cases the error was less then 480m

    Atmospheric trace metal concentrations, solubility and deposition fluxes in remote marine air over the south-east Atlantic

    Total and soluble trace metal concentrations were determined in atmospheric aerosol and rainwater samples collected during seven cruises in the south-east Atlantic. Back trajectories indicated the samples all represented remote marine air masses, consistent with climatological expectations. Aerosol trace metal loadings were similar to previous measurements in clean, marine air masses. Median total Fe, Al, Mn, V, Co and Zn concentrations were 206, 346, 5, 3, 0.7 and 11 pmol m-3 respectively. Solubility was operationally defined as the fraction extractable using a pH4.7 ammonium acetate leach. Median soluble Fe, Al, Mn, V, Co, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd and Pb concentrations were 6, 55, 1, 0.7, 0.06, 24, 2, 1, 0.05 and 0.3 pmol m-3 respectively. Large ranges in fractional solubility were observed for all elements except Co; median solubility values for Fe, Al and Mn were below 20% while the median for Zn was 74%. Volume weighted mean rainwater concentrations were 704, 792, 32, 10, 3, 686, 25, 0.02, 0.3 and 10 nmol L-1 for Fe, Al, Mn, V, Co, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd and Pb respectively (n = 6). Wet deposition fluxes calculated from these values suggest rain makes a significant contribution to total deposition in the study area for all elements except perhaps Ni

    Simultaneous reconstruction of evolutionary history and epidemiological dynamics from viral sequences with the birth-death SIR model

    The evolution of RNA viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis C and Influenza virus occurs so rapidly that the viruses' genomes contain information on past ecological dynamics. Hence, we develop a phylodynamic method that enables the joint estimation of epidemiological parameters and phylogenetic history. Based on a compartmental susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) model, this method provides separate information on incidence and prevalence of infections. Detailed information on the interaction of host population dynamics and evolutionary history can inform decisions on how to contain or entirely avoid disease outbreaks. We apply our Birth-Death SIR method (BDSIR) to two viral data sets. First, five human immunodeficiency virus type 1 clusters sampled in the United Kingdom between 1999 and 2003 are analyzed. The estimated basic reproduction ratios range from 1.9 to 3.2 among the clusters. All clusters show a decline in the growth rate of the local epidemic in the middle or end of the 90's. The analysis of a hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2c data set shows that the local epidemic in the C\'ordoban city Cruz del Eje originated around 1906 (median), coinciding with an immigration wave from Europe to central Argentina that dates from 1880--1920.
