    SimSched: A tool for Simulating Autosar Implementaion in Simulink

    AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) is an open industry standard for the automotive sector. It defines the three-layered automotive software architecture. One of these layers is the application layer, where functional behaviors are encapsulated in Software Components (SW-Cs). Inside SW-Cs, a set of runnable entities represents the internal behavior and is realized as a set of tasks. To address AUTOSAR's lack of support for modeling behaviors of runnables, languages such as Simulink are employed. Simulink simulations assume Simulink block behaviors are completed in zero execution time, while real execution requires a finite execution time. This timing mismatch can result in failures to detect unexpected runtime behaviors during the simulation phase. This paper extends the Simulink environment to model the timing properties of tasks. We present a Simulink block that can schedule tasks with non-zero simulation times. It enables a more realistic analysis during model development.Comment: 21 page

    Optimized Buffering of Time-Triggered Automotive Software

    The development of an automotive system involves the integration of many real-time software functionalities, and it is of utmost importance to guarantee strict timing requirements. However, the recent trend towards multi-core architectures poses significant challenges for the timely transfer of signals between processor cores so as to not violate data consistency. We have studied and adapted an existing buffering mechanism to work specifically for statically scheduled time-triggered systems, called static buffering protocol. We developed further buffering optimisation algorithms and heuristics, to reduce the memory consumption, processor utilisation, and end-to-end response times of time-triggered AUTOSAR designs on multi-core platforms. Our contributions are important because they enable deterministic time-triggered implementations to become competitive alternatives to their inherently non-deterministic event-triggered counterparts. We have prototyped a selection of optimisations in an industrial tool and evaluated them on realistic industrial automotive benchmarks

    Analysis and Evaluation of Inter-Core Communication Based on a Multi-Core Automotive Software and Hardware

    The vehicles have become increasingly computerized in order to satisfy the strict safety requirements and to provide better driving experiences. Growing complexity of vehicle functionality requires higher performance and increases complexity of electronic control units (ECUs) software. As a result, the AUTOSAR standard was established by several major vendors and manufactures in 2003. This foundation introduced a standard with the main goal to define a uniform ECU software architecture, which reduces the software complexity. The standardisation of software along with the increasing requirements for resources brought the single core processors to their limit of performance. Hence, new techniques had to be introduced to increase computational power. A solution to this problem is a multi-core processor. It is expected that the main focus for the automotive industry in the next decade will be to implement the existing single-core software to a multi-core architecture. One of the key challenges is to reduce the execution time of inter-core communication in order to maintain the response time in safety critical systems such as the electronic brake system. As the need for multi-core processors became apparent in the automotive industry, AUTOSAR introduced the initial release of multi-core support in 2012 with version 4.0. The specification provides guidelines for implementing multi-core architecture. One of the key elements is the Inter OSApplication Communication (IOC), which provides the cross-core communication between applications located in different cores on a single ECU. The current multi-core software implementation is still in development and there are performance limitations that offer scope for improvement. This thesis addresses the challenge of multi-core software in automotive systems and proposes possible approaches for inter-core communication. In order to identify possible improvements, a number of software benchmarking experiments were designed for intra-core and inter-core communication and implemented on an universal ECU to validate the performance in term of execution time and memory consumption.     In order to implement multi-core systems for single-mode and multi-mode real-time applications, as can be found in modern automobiles, their development process requires appropriate methods and tools for timing and performance verification. In this context, this thesis proposes first novel approaches for the analysis of worst-case blocking-times and response-times for single-mode real-time applications that share resources in partitioned multi-core systems. For this purpose a compositional performance analysis methodology is adopted and extended to take into account the contention of tasks on the processor cores and on the shared resources under different combinations of processor scheduling policies and shared resource arbitration strategies. Highly relevant is the compatibility of the proposed analysis methods with the specifications of the automotive AUTOSAR standard, which defines the combination of (1) preemptive, non-preemptive and cooperative core local scheduling with (2) lock-based arbitration of core local shared resources and spinlock-based arbitration of inter-core shared resources. Further, this thesis proposes novel timing analysis solutions for multi-mode distributed real-time systems. For such systems, the settling time of a mode change, called mode change transition latency, is identified as an important system parameter that has been neglected before. This thesis contributes a novel analysis algorithm which gives a maximum bound on each mode change transition latency of multi-mode distributed applications. Knowing the settling time of each mode change, the impact of multiple mode changes and of the possible overload situations can be handled in the early development phases of real-time systems. Finally, an approach for safely handling shared resources across mode changes is presented and a corresponding timing analysis method is contributed. The new analysis solution combines modeling and analysis elements of the multi-core and multi-mode related analysis solutions and focuses on the specification of the AUTOSAR standard. This enables system designers to handle the timing behavior of more complex systems in which the problems of mode management, multi-core scheduling and shared resource arbitration coexist. The applicability and usefulness of the contributed analysis solutions are highlighted by experimental evaluations, which are enabled by the implementation of the proposed analysis methods in a performance analysis tool framework.Um Multicore-Systeme für die Umsetzung zeitkritischer Single- und Multi-Mode Anwendungen in sicherheitskritischen Umgebungen einsetzen zu können, werden in dem Entwicklungsprozess geeignete Analysemethoden und Tools zur Bestimmung des Zeitverhaltens und der Performanz benötigt. Als erster Beitrag dieser Dissertation werden neue Analyseverfahren eingeführt, um die Worst-Case-Antwortzeiten und -Blockierungszeiten für statische Echtzeitanwendungen in Single-Mode eingebetteten Multicore-Systemen mit gemeinsam genutzten Ressourcen zu bestimmen. Die entwickelten Verfahren nutzen einen existierenden kompositionellen Performanzanalyseansatz und erweitern diesen, um verschiedene Kombinationen von partitionierenden Multiprozessor-Schedulingverfahren und –Synchronisationsmechanismen behandeln zu können. Besonders praxisrelevant ist die Möglichkeit, die Kombination von (1) preemptives, nicht-preemptives sowie kooperatives Prozessor-Scheduling und (2) Spinlock-basierten Synchronisationsmechanismen zu analysieren, die heute in AUTOSAR-konformen Automotive-Softwarearchitekturen standardisiert sind. Als zweiter Beitrag wird in dieser Dissertation ein neuer Ansatz für die Analyse der zeitlichen Auswirkungen von mehreren Szenarienübergängen in vernetzten Multi-Mode eingebetteten Systemen eingeführt. Als erste konstruktive Maßnahme ermöglicht das in dieser Arbeit präsentierte Verfahren die Berechnung der Einschwingzeit jedes Szenarioübergangs und leistet dadurch eine wichtige Hilfestellung beim Systementwurf. Auf diese Weise können die Auswirkungen der Szenarienübergänge, einschließlich der zeitlich begrenzten Überlastsituationen, kontrolliert und in den Systementwurf frühzeitig einbezogen werden. Als letzter Beitrag dieser Dissertation wird ein Ansatz für die Handhabung der Zugriffskonflikte auf gemeinsam genutzten Ressourcen in Multi-Mode eingebetteten Multicore-Systemen präsentiert und eine entsprechende Analysemethode eingeführt. Die neue Analyse kombiniert Modellierungs- und Analyse-Elemente der vorher in dieser Arbeit eingeführten Analyseansätze, und ermöglicht die Untersuchung des ungünstigsten Zeitverhaltens viel komplexer eingebetteten Multicore-Systemen. Dabei werden erneut Spezifikationen der AUTOSAR-Standards berücksichtigt. Nicht zuletzt werden alle Analysemethoden in eine Toolumgebung implementiert und für verschiedene Experimente, die deren praktische Anwendbarkeit hervorheben, angewendet

    Smart hardware designs for probabilistically-analyzable processor architectures

    Future Critical Real-Time Embedded Systems (CRTES), like those is planes, cars or trains, require more and more guaranteed performance in order to satisfy the increasing performance demands of advanced complex software features. While increased performance can be achieved by deploying processor techniques currently used in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and mainstream domains, their use challenges the software timing analysis, a necessary step in CRTES' verification and validation. Cache memories are known to have high impact in performance, and in fact, current CRTES include multicores usually with several levels of cache. In this line, this Thesis aims at increasing the guaranteed performance of CRTES by using techniques for caches building upon time randomization and providing probabilistic guarantees of tasks' execution time. In this Thesis, we first focus on on improving cache placement and replacement to improve guaranteed performance. For placement, different existing policies are explored in a multi-level cache setup, and a solution is reached in which different of those policies are combined. For cache replacement, we analyze a pathological scenario that no cache policy so far accounts and propose several policies that fix this pathological scenario. For shared caches in multicore we observe that contention is mainly caused by private writes that go through to the shared cache, yet using a pure write-back policy also has its drawbacks. We propose a hybrid approach to mitigate this contention. Building on this solution, the next contribution tackles a problem caused by the need of some reliability mechanisms in CRTES. Implementing reliability close to the processor's core has a significant impact in performance. A look-ahead error detection solution is proposed to greatly mitigate the performance impact. The next contribution proposes the first hardware prefetcher for CRTES with arbitrary cache hierarchies. Given its speculative nature, prefetchers that have a guaranteed positive impact on performance are difficult to design. We present a framework that provides execution time guarantees and obtains a performance benefit. Finally, we focus on the impact of timing anomalies in CRTES with caches. For the first time, a definition and taxonomy of timing anomalies is given for Measurement-Based Timing Analysis. Then, we focus on a specific timing anomaly that can happen with caches and provide a solution to account for it in the execution time estimates.Los Sistemas Empotrados de Tiempo-Real Crítico (SETRC), como los de los aviones, coches o trenes, requieren más y más rendimiento garantizado para satisfacer la demanda al alza de rendimiento para funciones complejas y avanzadas de software. Aunque el incremento en rendimiento puede ser adquirido utilizando técnicas de arquitectura de procesadores actualmente utilizadas en la Computación de Altas Prestaciones (CAP) i en los dominios convencionales, este uso presenta retos para el análisis del tiempo de software, un paso necesario en la verificación y validación de SETRC. Las memorias caches son conocidas por su gran impacto en rendimiento y, de hecho, los actuales SETRC incluyen multicores normalmente con diversos niveles de cache. En esta línea, esta Tesis tiene como objetivo mejorar el rendimiento garantizado de los SETRC utilizando técnicas para caches y utilizando métodos como la randomización del tiempo y proveyendo garantías probabilísticas de tiempo de ejecución de las tareas. En esta Tesis, primero nos centramos en mejorar la colocación y el reemplazo de caches para mejorar el rendimiento garantizado. Para la colocación, diferentes políticas son exploradas en un sistema cache multi-nivel, y se llega a una solución donde diversas de estas políticas son combinadas. Para el reemplazo, analizamos un escenario patológico que ninguna política actual tiene en cuenta, y proponemos varias políticas que solucionan este escenario patológico. Para caches compartidas en multicores, observamos que la contención es causada principalmente por escrituras privadas que van a través de la cache compartida, pero usar una política de escritura retardada pura también tiene sus consecuencias. Proponemos un enfoque híbrido para mitigar la contención. Sobre esta solución, la siguiente contribución ataca un problema causado por la necesidad de mecanismos de fiabilidad en SETRC. Implementar fiabilidad cerca del núcleo del procesador tiene un impacto significativo en rendimiento. Una solución basada en anticipación se propone para mitigar el impacto en rendimiento. La siguiente contribución propone el primer prefetcher hardware para SETRC con una jerarquía de caches arbitraria. Por primera vez, se da una definición y taxonomía de anomalías temporales para Análisis Temporal Basado en Medidas. Después, nos centramos en una anomalía temporal concreta que puede pasar con caches y ofrecemos una solución que la tiene en cuenta en las estimaciones del tiempo de ejecución.Postprint (published version
