    Handling Scheduling Problems with Controllable Parameters by Methods of Submodular Optimization

    In this paper, we demonstrate how scheduling problems with controllable processing times can be reformulated as maximization linear programming problems over a submodular polyhedron intersected with a box. We explain a decomposition algorithm for solving the latter problem and discuss its implications for the relevant problems of preemptive scheduling on a single machine and parallel machines

    The Lazy Bureaucrat Scheduling Problem

    We introduce a new class of scheduling problems in which the optimization is performed by the worker (single ``machine'') who performs the tasks. A typical worker's objective is to minimize the amount of work he does (he is ``lazy''), or more generally, to schedule as inefficiently (in some sense) as possible. The worker is subject to the constraint that he must be busy when there is work that he can do; we make this notion precise both in the preemptive and nonpreemptive settings. The resulting class of ``perverse'' scheduling problems, which we denote ``Lazy Bureaucrat Problems,'' gives rise to a rich set of new questions that explore the distinction between maximization and minimization in computing optimal schedules.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, Latex.     Optimizing busy time on parallel machines

    We consider the following fundamental scheduling problem in which the input consists of n jobs to be scheduled on a set of identical machines of bounded capacity g (which is the maximal number of jobs that can be processed simultaneously by a single machine). Each job is associated with a start time and a completion time, it is supposed to be processed from the start time to the completion time (and in one of our extensions it has to be scheduled also in a continuous number of days, this corresponds to a two-dimensional version of the problem). We consider two versions of the problem. In the scheduling minimization version the goal is to minimize the total busy time of machines used to schedule all jobs. In the resource allocation maximization version the goal is to maximize the number of jobs that are scheduled for processing under a budget constraint given in terms of busy time. This is the first study of the maximization version of the problem. The minimization problem is known to be NP-Hard, thus the maximization problem is also NP-Hard. We consider various special cases, identify cases where an optimal solution can be computed in polynomial time, and mainly provide constant factor approximation algorithms for both minimization and maximization problems. Some of our results improve upon the best known results for this job scheduling problem. Our study has applications in power consumption, cloud computing and optimizing switching cost of optical networks

    Common operation scheduling with general processing times: A branch-and-cut algorithm to minimize the weighted number of tardy jobs

    Common operation scheduling (COS) problems arise in real-world applications, such as industrial processes of material cutting or component dismantling. In COS, distinct jobs may share operations, and when an operation is done, it is done for all the jobs that share it. We here propose a 0-1 LP formulation with exponentially many inequalities to minimize the weighted number of tardy jobs. Separation of inequalities is in NP, provided that an ordinary min Lmax scheduling problem is in P. We develop a branch-and-cut algorithm for two cases: one machine with precedence relation; identical parallel machines with unit operation times. In these cases separation is the constrained maximization of a submodular set function. A previous method is modified to tackle the two cases, and compared to our algorithm. We report on tests conducted on both industrial and artificial instances. For single machine and general processing times the new method definitely outperforms the other, extending in this way the range of COS applications

    Throughput Maximization in Multiprocessor Speed-Scaling

    We are given a set of nn jobs that have to be executed on a set of mm speed-scalable machines that can vary their speeds dynamically using the energy model introduced in [Yao et al., FOCS'95]. Every job jj is characterized by its release date rjr_j, its deadline djd_j, its processing volume pi,jp_{i,j} if jj is executed on machine ii and its weight wjw_j. We are also given a budget of energy EE and our objective is to maximize the weighted throughput, i.e. the total weight of jobs that are completed between their respective release dates and deadlines. We propose a polynomial-time approximation algorithm where the preemption of the jobs is allowed but not their migration. Our algorithm uses a primal-dual approach on a linearized version of a convex program with linear constraints. Furthermore, we present two optimal algorithms for the non-preemptive case where the number of machines is bounded by a fixed constant. More specifically, we consider: {\em (a)} the case of identical processing volumes, i.e. pi,j=pp_{i,j}=p for every ii and jj, for which we present a polynomial-time algorithm for the unweighted version, which becomes a pseudopolynomial-time algorithm for the weighted throughput version, and {\em (b)} the case of agreeable instances, i.e. for which ri≤rjr_i \le r_j if and only if di≤djd_i \le d_j, for which we present a pseudopolynomial-time algorithm. Both algorithms are based on a discretization of the problem and the use of dynamic programming

    Interdependent Scheduling Games

    We propose a model of interdependent scheduling games in which each player controls a set of services that they schedule independently. A player is free to schedule his own services at any time; however, each of these services only begins to accrue reward for the player when all predecessor services, which may or may not be controlled by the same player, have been activated. This model, where players have interdependent services, is motivated by the problems faced in planning and coordinating large-scale infrastructures, e.g., restoring electricity and gas to residents after a natural disaster or providing medical care in a crisis when different agencies are responsible for the delivery of staff, equipment, and medicine. We undertake a game-theoretic analysis of this setting and in particular consider the issues of welfare maximization, computing best responses, Nash dynamics, and existence and computation of Nash equilibria.Comment: Accepted to IJCAI 201
