Advances in Detection and Classification of Underwater Targets using Synthetic Aperture Sonar Imagery
In this PhD thesis, the problem of underwater mine detection and classification using
synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) imagery is considered. The automatic detection and
automatic classification (ADAC) system is applied to images obtained by SAS systems.
The ADAC system contains four steps, namely mine-like object (MLO) detection, image
segmentation, feature extraction, and mine type classification. This thesis focuses
on the last three steps.
In the mine-like object detection step, a template-matching technique based on the a
priori knowledge of mine shapes is applied to scan the sonar imagery for the detection
of MLOs. Regions containing MLOs are called regions of interest (ROI). They are
extracted and forwarded to the subsequent steps, i.e. image segmentation and feature
extraction.
In the image segmentation step, a modified expectation-maximization (EM) approach
is proposed. For the sake of acquiring the shape information of the MLO in the ROI, the
SAS images are segmented into highlights, shadows, and backgrounds. A generalized
mixture model is adopted to approximate the statistics of the image data. In addition,
a Dempster-Shafer theory-based clustering technique is used to consider the spatial
correlation between pixels so that the clutters in background regions can be removed.
Optimal parameter settings for the proposed EM approach are found with the help of
quantitative numerical studies.
In the feature extraction step, features are extracted and will be used as the inputs
for the mine type classification step. Both the geometrical features and the texture
features are applied. However, there are numerous features proposed to describe the
object shape and the texture in the literature.
Due to the curse of dimensionality, it is indispensable to do the feature selection during
the design of an ADAC system. A sophisticated filter method is developed to choose
optimal features for the classification purpose. This filter method utilizes a novel
feature relevance measure that is a combination of the mutual information, the modified
Relief weight, and the Shannon entropy. The selected features demonstrate a higher
generalizability. Compared with other filter methods, the features selected by our
method can lead to superior classification accuracy, and their performance variation
over different classifiers is decreased.
In the mine type classification step, the prediction of the types of MLO is considered. In
order to take advantage of the complementary information among different classifiers, a classifier combination scheme is developed in the framework of the Dempster-Shafer
theory. The outputs of individual classifiers are combined according to this classifier
combination scheme. The resulting classification accuracy is better than those of
individual classifiers.
All of the proposed methods are evaluated using SAS data. Finally, conclusions are
drawn, and some suggestions about future works are proposed as well
Liver Segmentation and its Application to Hepatic Interventions
The thesis addresses the development of an intuitive and accurate liver segmentation approach, its integration into software prototypes for the planning of liver interventions, and research on liver regeneration. The developed liver segmentation approach is based on a combination of the live wire paradigm and shape-based interpolation. Extended with two correction modes and integrated into a user-friendly workflow, the method has been applied to more than 5000 data sets. The combination of the liver segmentation with image analysis of hepatic vessels and tumors allows for the computation of anatomical and functional remnant liver volumes. In several projects with clinical partners world-wide, the benefit of the computer-assisted planning was shown. New insights about the postoperative liver function and regeneration could be gained, and most recent investigations into the analysis of MRI data provide the option to further improve hepatic intervention planning
Optoacoustic molecular Imaging
Optoacoustic molecular imaging can provide spatially resolved information about the presence of molecular markers in-vivo with high sensitivity. For further development of optoacoustic imaging towards a preclinical and clinical use, different methods for the enhancement of its sensitivity and specificity were investigated in this thesis. A simulation tool for the prediction of the frequency of optoacoustic signals was developed in order to be able to use spectrally matched transducers allowing data acquisition with optimized signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Further, newly developed reconstruction and filter algorithms could enhance the SNR and the resolution of optoacoustic images significantly. Beyond that, different nanoparticle types were synthesized and compared with respect to their suitability as contrast agents. The synthesis was further optimized in terms of the particle's near-infrared absorption properties. In addition, different methods for binding biological targeting agents were developed and verified using a model system based on gold nanoshells and the monoclonal antibody Trastuzumab. First in-vivo trials for realtime optoacoustic imaging of subcutaneous blood vessels were performed successfully. Furthermore, a proof-of-concept experiment for validation of optoacoustic molecular imaging in which a specific contrast enhancement in arthritic mouse knee joints could be shown after intravenous injection of antibody modified gold nanorods was conducted
Nephroblastoma in MRI Data
The main objective of this work is the mathematical analysis of nephroblastoma in MRI sequences. At the beginning we provide two different datasets for segmentation and classification. Based on the first dataset, we analyze the current clinical practice regarding therapy planning on the basis of annotations of a single radiologist. We can show with our benchmark that this approach is not optimal and that there may be significant differences between human annotators and even radiologists. In addition, we demonstrate that the approximation of the tumor shape currently used is too coarse granular and thus prone to errors. We address this problem and develop a method for interactive segmentation that allows an intuitive and accurate annotation of the tumor. While the first part of this thesis is mainly concerned with the segmentation of Wilms’ tumors, the second part deals with the reliability of diagnosis and the planning of the course of therapy. The second data set we compiled allows us to develop a method that dramatically improves the differential diagnosis between nephroblastoma and its precursor lesion nephroblastomatosis. Finally, we can show that even the standard MRI modality for Wilms’ tumors is sufficient to estimate the developmental tendencies of nephroblastoma under chemotherapy
