    GESTAS DE ARENA

    Get PDF

    Fine’s McTaggart: Reloaded

    Get PDF
In this paper I will present three arguments (based on the notions of constitution, metaphysical reality, and truth, respectively) with the aim of shedding some new light on the structure of Fine’s (2005, 2006) ‘McTaggartian’ arguments against the reality of tense. Along the way, I will also (i) draw a novel map of the main realist positions about tense, (ii) unearth a previously unnoticed but potentially interesting form of external relativism (which I will label ‘hyper-presentism’) and (iii) sketch a novel interpretation of Fine’s fragmentalism (which I contrast with Lipman’s 2015, 2016b, forthcoming)

    Epistemic Immodesty and Embodied Rationality

    Get PDF
Based on Pritchard’s distinction (2012, 2016) between favoring and discriminating epistemic grounds, and on how those grounds bear on the elimination of skeptical possibilities, I present the dream argument as a moderate skeptical possibility that can be reasonably motivated. In order to block the dream argument skeptical conclusion, I present a version of phenomenological disjunctivism based on Noë’s actionist account of perceptual consciousness (2012). This suggests that perceptual knowledge is rationally grounded because it is a form of embodied achievement – what I call embodied rationality –, which offers a way of dissolving the pseudo-problem of epistemic immodesty, namely, the seemingly counterintuitive thesis that one can acquire rationally grounded knowledge that one is not in a radical skeptical scenario

    What Is Time?

    Get PDF
In this paper, I answer the question of what time is. First, however, I consider why one might ask this question and what exactly it is asking. The latter consideration reveals that in order to answer the question, one must first engage in a more basic investigation of what a thing, anything at all, is. Such radical investigation requires a special methodology. After briefly characterizing this methodology, I show how it can be employed to answer the titular question. This answer is significant not merely because it illuminates something of perennial interest, but because it is essential to a comprehensive and fully satisfactory metaphysics of time and, hence, to a view of the full structure in reality

Analytical modeling of reinforced concrete columns subjected to bidirectional shear

    Get PDF
Under general seismic loading, reinforced concrete columns may be subjected to lateral loads in more than one direction. Available experimental data on columns subjected to bidirectional forces indicate that higher levels of damage and a higher loss of ductility and strength have been observed compared to similar tests under unidirectional shear forces. In this study, an experimental program was conducted in which six lightly reinforced concrete columns were subjected to unidirectional and bidirectional cyclic shear forces. This observation was used to identify the mechanisms and parameters governing the behavior of columns subjected to cyclic bidirectional lateral loads. Hence, a new conceptual model was developed to obtain the capacity of member. The shear forces were analyzed and an analytical formulation was derived to account for the effects in the concrete stress-strain relationship, the moment-curvature diagram and the plastic hinge length. These equations were used along with a structural model with concentrated plastic hinges to obtain the capacity curve of the column. The results of the formulations developed were verified using the results of the experiments performed on columns subjected to unidirectional and bidirectional cyclic lateral forces.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Space, mass and ornament in the Gothic-Renaissance transition in Spain

    Get PDF
During the sixteenth century the new Renaissance forms were introduced in Spain, but the Gothic procedures continued to be used due to their proven validity for the architectural design. The renovation of the architecture was heterogeneous and different for each master, according to his previous training and his knowledge of the new Italian forms. This involved a hybrid and plural context in the Spanish architecture of the 16th century. The changes and continuities of the architectural design process during this transitory stage are investigated in this paper, based on significant texts and graphic documents of this period. The analysis is structured based on three substantial architectural categories, which are simultaneously interdependent and autonomous: space, mass and ornamen

    Gunky time and indeterminate existence

    Get PDF
The paper criticizes an argument recently presented by Ross Cameron. The argument purports to show that, if time is gunky (that is, if there are no time atoms), and if changes in existence are underwritten by events of coming to be, then there are cases of indeterminate existence. The putative reason is that, if time is gunky, then events of coming to be cannot be instantaneous, and hence, changes in existence must be gradual, non-clear-cut. The paper argues that this argument conflates two different readings of \u201cevent of coming to be\u201d. Under one reading, the argument is unsound. Under the other, the argument is valid only if a further, nontrivial premise is added, which concerns the relation between time atoms, instants, and instantaneous events
