    A Taxonomy of Data Grids for Distributed Data Sharing, Management and Processing

    Data Grids have been adopted as the platform for scientific communities that need to share, access, transport, process and manage large data collections distributed worldwide. They combine high-end computing technologies with high-performance networking and wide-area storage management techniques. In this paper, we discuss the key concepts behind Data Grids and compare them with other data sharing and distribution paradigms such as content delivery networks, peer-to-peer networks and distributed databases. We then provide comprehensive taxonomies that cover various aspects of architecture, data transportation, data replication and resource allocation and scheduling. Finally, we map the proposed taxonomy to various Data Grid systems not only to validate the taxonomy but also to identify areas for future exploration. Through this taxonomy, we aim to categorise existing systems to better understand their goals and their methodology. This would help evaluate their applicability for solving similar problems. This taxonomy also provides a "gap analysis" of this area through which researchers can potentially identify new issues for investigation. Finally, we hope that the proposed taxonomy and mapping also helps to provide an easy way for new practitioners to understand this complex area of research.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Technical Repor

And yet a form that once inspired social and artistic revolutions is often seen as the staid preserve of the elite. With rising inequality and social exclusion, many see opera-if they think of it at all-as symbolic of what is wrong in Europe today. This paper presents technological and scientific approach of the European H2020 TRACTION project that aims to use opera as a path for social and cultural inclusion, making it once again a force for radicaltransformation. TRACTION wants to define new forms of artistic creation through which the most marginalised groups (e.g. migrants, the rural poor, young offenders and others) can work with artists to tell the stories that matter now.     A network QoS management architecture for virtualization environments

    Network quality of service (QoS) and its management are concerned with providing, guaranteeing and reporting properties of data flows within computer networks. For the past two decades, virtualization has been becoming a very popular tool in data centres, yet, without network QoS management capabilities. With virtualization, the management focus shifts from physical components and topologies, towards virtual infrastructures (VI) and their purposes. VIs are designed and managed as independent isolated entities. Without network QoS management capabilities, VIs cannot offer the same services and service levels as physical infrastructures can, leaving VIs at a disadvantage with respect to applicability and efficiency. This thesis closes this gap and develops a management architecture, enabling network QoS management in virtulization environments. First, requirements are dervied, based on real world scenarios, yielding a validation reference for the proposed architecture. After that, a life cycle for VIs and a taxonomy for network links and virtual components are introduced, to arrange the network QoS management task with the general management of virtualization environments and enabling the creation of technology specific adaptors for integrating the technologies and sub-services used in virtualization environments. The core aspect, shaping the proposed management architecture, is a management loop and its corresponding strategy for identifying and ordering sub-tasks. Finally, a prototypical implementation showcases that the presented management approach is suited for network QoS management and enforcement in virtualization environments. The architecture fulfils its purpose, fulfilling all identified requirements. Ultimately, network QoS management is one amongst many aspects to management in virtualization environments and the herin presented architecture shows interfaces to other management areas, where integration is left as future work.Verwaltungsaufgaben für Netzdienstgüte umfassen das Bereitstellen, Sichern und Berichten von Flusseigenschaften in Rechnernetzen. Während der letzen zwei Jahrzehnte entwickelte sich Virtualisierung zu einer Schlüsseltechnologie für Rechenzentren, bisher ohne Möglichkeiten zum Verwalten der Netzdienstgüte. Der Einsatz von Virtualisierung verschiebt den Fokus beim Betrieb von Rechenzentren weg von physischen Komponenten und Netzen, hin zu virtuellen Infrastrukturen (VI) und ihren Einsatzzwecken. VIs werden als unabhängige, voneinander isolierte Einheiten entwickelt und verwaltet. Ohne Netzdienstgüte, sind VIs nicht so vielseitig und effizient einsetzbar wie physische Aufbauten. Diese Arbeit schließt diese Lücke mit der Entwicklung einer Managementarchitektur zur Verwaltung der Netzdienstgüte in Virtualisierungsumgebungen. Zunächst werden Anforderungen aus realen Szenarios abgeleitet, mit denen Architekturen bewertet werden können. Zur Abgrenzung der speziellen Aufgabe Netzdienstgüteverwaltung innerhalb des allgemeinen Managementproblems, wird anschließend ein Lebenszyklusmodell für VIs vorgestellt. Die Entwicklung einer Taxonomie für Kopplungen und Komponenten ermöglicht technologiespezifische Adaptoren zur Integration von in Virtualisierungsumgebungen eingesetzten Technologien. Kerngedanke hinter der entwickelten Architektur ist eine Rückkopplungsschleife und ihre einhergehende Methode zur Strukturierung und Anordnung von Teilproblemen. Abschließend zeigt eine prototypische Implementierung, dass dieser Ansatz für Verwaltung und Durchsetzung von Netzdienstgüte in Virtualisierungsumgebungen geeignet ist. Die Architektur kann ihren Zweck sowie die gestellten Anforderungen erfüllen. Schlussendlich ist Netzdienstgüte ein Bereich von vielen beim Betrieb von Virtualisierungsumgebungen.     The great technological development of informatics has opened the way for provisioning various services and new online-based entertainment services, which have expanded significantly after the increase in social media applications and the number of users. This significant expansion has posed an additional challenge to Internet Service Providers (ISP)s in terms of management for network, equipment and the efficiency of service delivery. New notions and techniques have been developed to offer innovative solutions such as SDN for network management, virtualization for optimal resource utilization and others like cloud computing and network function virtualization. This dissertation aims to manage live video streaming in the network automatically by adding a design architecture to the virtual network environment that helps to filter video packets from the remaining ones into a certain tunnel and this tunnel will be handled as a higher priority to be able to provide better service for customers. With the dedicated architecture, side by side, a monitoring application integrated into the system was used to detect the video packets and notify the SDN server to the existence of the video through the networkOs grandes avanços tecnológicos em informática abriram o caminho para o fornecimento de vários serviços e novos aplicações de entretenimento baseadas na web, que expandiram significativamente com a explosão no número de aplicações e utilizadores das redes sociais. Novas noções e técnicas foram desenvolvidas para oferecer soluções inovadoras, tais como redes definidas por software (SDN) para a gestão de rede, virtualização para a optimização da utilização dos recursos e outros, tais como a computação em nuvem e as funções de rede virtualizadas. Esta dissertação pretende gerir automaticamente a emissão de vídeo ao vivo na rede, através da adição de uma arquitetura ao ambiente de rede virtualizado, que auxilie a filtragem de pacotes de vídeo dos do restante tráfego, para um túnel específico, que será gerido com uma prioridade maior, capaz de fornecer melhor serviço aos clientes.     Creating a Flexible IT Organization

    In 2004, the nearly billion dollar software company Business Objects undertook a major acquisition. Now, the business is looking to improve operations and position itself as a major player in the business intelligence market. This paper focuses on how Business Objects can create a flexible IT organization that can evolve with changing corporate strategies in today\u27s competitive markets. The analysis section completes a SWOT analysis and reviews business strategy, organizational strategy and IT strategy. The analysis concludes that increased legislated process and broad geographic reach in a truly flexible IT organization are not feasible. However, action can be taken to balance control and flexibility that will make IT an enabler for the business. Recommendations include appointment of a CIO, hybrid organizational structure and establishment of performance metrics. As part of implementation strategy, a gradual change management approach is recommended with a dedicated team to monitor progress and adapt the plan as the environment evolves

    Social Media for the Promotion of Holistic Self-Participatory Care: An Evidence Based Approach

    Objectives: As health information is becoming increasingly accessible, social media offers ample opportunities to track, be informed, share and promote health. These authors explore how social media and holistic care may work together; more specifically however, our objective is to document, from different perspectives, how social networks have impacted, supported and helped sustain holistic self-participatory care. Methods: A literature review was performed to investigate the use of social media for promoting health in general and complementary alternative care in particular. We also explore a case study of an intervention for improving the health of Greek senior citizens through digital and other means. Results: The Health Belief Model provides a framework for assessing the benefits of social media interventions in promoting comprehensive participatory self-care. Some interventions are particularly effective when integrating social media with real-world encounters. Yet not all social media tools are evidence-based and efficacious. Interestingly, social media is also used to elicit patient ratings of treatments (e.g., for depression), often demonstrating the effectiveness of complementary treatments, such as yoga and mindfulness meditation. Conclusions: To facilitate the use of social media for the promotion of complementary alternative medicine through self-quantification, social connectedness and sharing of experiences, exploration of concrete and abstract ideas are presented herewithin. The main mechanisms by which social support may help improve health - emotional support, an ability to share experiences, and non-hierarchal roles, emphasizing reciprocity in giving and receiving support – are integral to social media and provide great hope for its effective us
