    Time Encoding via Unlimited Sampling: Theory, Algorithms and Hardware Validation

    An alternative to conventional uniform sampling is that of time encoding, which converts continuous-time signals into streams of trigger times. This gives rise to Event-Driven Sampling (EDS) models. The data-driven nature of EDS acquisition is advantageous in terms of power consumption and time resolution and is inspired by the information representation in biological nervous systems. If an analog signal is outside a predefined dynamic range, then EDS generates a low density of trigger times, which in turn leads to recovery distortion due to aliasing. In this paper, inspired by the Unlimited Sensing Framework (USF), we propose a new EDS architecture that incorporates a modulo nonlinearity prior to acquisition that we refer to as the modulo EDS or MEDS. In MEDS, the modulo nonlinearity folds high dynamic range inputs into low dynamic range amplitudes, thus avoiding recovery distortion. In particular, we consider the asynchronous sigma-delta modulator (ASDM), previously used for low power analog-to-digital conversion. This novel MEDS based acquisition is enabled by a recent generalization of the modulo nonlinearity called modulo-hysteresis. We design a mathematically guaranteed recovery algorithm for bandlimited inputs based on a sampling rate criterion and provide reconstruction error bounds. We go beyond numerical experiments and also provide a first hardware validation of our approach, thus bridging the gap between theory and practice, while corroborating the conceptual underpinnings of our work.Comment: 27 pgs, 11 figures, IEEE Trans.     Design of a low-voltage op-amp-less ASDM to linearise VCO-ADC

    A very simple asynchronous sigma delta modulator design for linearisation of VCO ADC's is presented. The circuit only consists of a passive feedback filter and a Schmitt Trigger. By proper sizing, the non-linearity error can be reduced to well below 0.12% for input signals that go almost rail-to-rail. The design has been manufactured in the low power version of TSMC 65 nm technology and was measured at a 1 V power supply

    All-Optical Sigma-Delta Modulator for Analog-to-Digital Conversion

    In this thesis, an all-optical sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulator for analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) using a novel optical bistable switch, the SOA-PD device, is demonstrated. The presented all-optical ΣΔ modulator consists of a photonic leaky integrator, the SOA-PD optical comparator, and a positive feedback loop. The switching properties of the SOA-PD device are studied and experimentally tested to confirm its performance. Then the all-optical ΣΔ modulator is designed according to the switching performance of the SOA-PD device. It is demonstrated that the all-optical ΣΔ modulator is capable of producing an inverted non-return-to-zero (NRZ) type binary output for frequencies in the range of dozens of kilohertz. The limit cycle frequency of the ADC system is about 250 kHz, which is limited by the maximum switching speed of the SOA-PD device. Through noise analysis of the system, SNR and ENOB of the system are calculated to be 25.3 dB and 3.93 bits respectively

    Expression of renal distal tubule transporters TRPM6 and NCC in a rat model of cyclosporine nephrotoxicity and effect of EGF treatment

    Renal magnesium (Mg(2+)) and sodium (Na(+)) loss are well-known side effects of cyclosporine (CsA) treatment in humans, but the underlying mechanisms still remain unclear. Recently, it was shown that epidermal growth factor (EGF) stimulates Mg(2+) reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) via TRPM6 (Thebault S, Alexander RT, Tiel Groenestege WM, Hoenderop JG, Bindels RJ. J Am Soc Nephrol 20: 78-85, 2009). In the DCT, the final adjustment of renal sodium excretion is regulated by the thiazide-sensitive Na(+)-Cl(-) cotransporter (NCC), which is activated by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). The aim of this study was to gain more insight into the molecular mechanisms of CsA-induced hypomagnesemia and hyponatremia. Therefore, the renal expression of TRPM6, TRPM7, EGF, EGF receptor, claudin-16, claudin-19, and the NCC, and the effect of the RAAS on NCC expression, were analyzed in vivo in a rat model of CsA nephrotoxicity. Also, the effect of EGF administration on these parameters was studied. CsA significantly decreased the renal expression of TRPM6, TRPM7, NCC, and EGF, but not that of claudin-16 and claudin-19. Serum aldosterone was significantly lower in CsA-treated rats. In control rats treated with EGF, an increased renal expression of TRPM6 together with a decreased fractional excretion of Mg(2+) (FE Mg(2+)) was demonstrated. EGF did not show this beneficial effect on TRPM6 and FE Mg(2+) in CsA-treated rats. These data suggest that CsA treatment affects Mg(2+) homeostasis via the downregulation of TRPM6 in the DCT. Furthermore, CsA downregulates the NCC in the DCT, associated with an inactivation of the RAAS, resulting in renal sodium loss

    Analyzing the effect of clock jitter on self-oscillating sigma delta modulators

    This paper presents simple but accurate expressions for the noise components caused by clock jitter, in the output signal of self-oscillating sigma delta modulators (SOSDM). Contrary to conventional continuous time sigma delta modulators (CTSDM), the SOSDM's loop contains a strong oscillation, whose attribution to the system's jitter caused noise has not previously been explored. In this paper, the SOSDM system is modeled, and the effect of the self oscillation, the input signal and the quantization noise on the jitter caused noise in the output signal, is calculated. Results are confirmed by system level simulations

    Comparison of Hysteresis Based PWM Schemes ΔΣ-PWM and Direct Torque Control

    This paper presents the differences and similarities of ΔΣ-PWM as a hysteresis-based PWM scheme with direct torque control (DTC) using simulation models. The variable switching frequency caused by the hysteresis element is examined with regard to its instantaneous values. The comparison is based on an equal maximum switching frequency as a design criterion. With this first assumption, the variation of the instantaneous switching frequency is higher when using DTC because of the temporary prioritization of one inverter leg. Besides the lower variation, ΔΣ-PWM shows a higher average switching frequency. Because the switching frequency is related to the torque ripple, the usage of ΔΣ-PWM results in a smaller torque ripple. Due to the dependence of torque ripple on switching frequency, a second comparison is carried out based on the same average switching frequency. In this comparison the ΔΣ-PWM shows higher torque ripple than DTC

    One-Cycle Zero-Integral-Error Current Control for Shunt Active Power Filters

    [EN] Current control has, for decades, been one of the more challenging research fields in the development of power converters. Simple and robust nonlinear methods like hysteresis or sigma-delta controllers have been commonly used, while sophisticated linear controllers based on classical control theory have been developed for PWM-based converters. The one-cycle current control technique is a nonlinear technique based on cycle-by-cycle calculation of the ON time of the converter switches for the next switching period. This kind of controller requires accurate measurement of voltages and currents in order achieve a precise current tracking. These techniques have been frequently used in the control of power converters generating low-frequency currents, where the reference varies slowly compared with the switching frequency. Its application is not so common in active power filter current controllers due to the fast variation of the references that demands not only accurate measurements but also high-speed computing. This paper proposes a novel one-cycle digital current controller based on the minimization of the integral error of the current. Its application in a three-leg four-wire shunt active power filter is presented, including a stability analysis considering the switching pattern selection.     Design of Delta Modulated AC - DC Converters

    An analysis and implementation of delta modulation (DM) technique in the control of ac-dc converters is studied here in this project. The DM technique offers advantages of easy implementation, continues converter voltage control, and a direct control on the line harmonics. A simple circuit of the delta modulator is proposed, designed and fabricated in the laboratory. This proposed modulation scheme, fundamentally differs from conventional PWM technique, by virtue of its self carrier generating ability. Results of the parametric variation of the modulator are reported. Simulated and experimental results of the single phase DM ac-dc converters validate the analytical results
