TCP in the Internet of Things: from ostracism to prominence

However, recent trends and industry needs are favoring TCP presence in IoT environments. In this article, we describe the main IoT scenarios where TCP will be used. We then analyze the historically claimed issues of TCP in the IoT context. We argue that, in contrast to generally accepted wisdom, most of those possible issues fall in one of the following categories: i) are also found in well-accepted IoT end-to-end reliability mechanisms, ii) can be solved, or iii) are not actual issues. Considering the future prominent role of TCP in the IoT, we provide recommendations for lightweight TCP implementation and suitable operation in such scenarios, based on our IETF standardization work on the topic.Postprint (author's final draft
Information Centric Networking in the IoT: Experiments with NDN in the Wild
This paper explores the feasibility, advantages, and challenges of an
ICN-based approach in the Internet of Things. We report on the first NDN
experiments in a life-size IoT deployment, spread over tens of rooms on several
floors of a building. Based on the insights gained with these experiments, the
paper analyses the shortcomings of CCN applied to IoT. Several interoperable
CCN enhancements are then proposed and evaluated. We significantly decreased
control traffic (i.e., interest messages) and leverage data path and caching to
match IoT requirements in terms of energy and bandwidth constraints. Our
optimizations increase content availability in case of IoT nodes with
intermittent activity. This paper also provides the first experimental

An autonomic delivery framework for HTTP adaptive streaming in multicast-enabled multimedia access networks
The consumption of multimedia services over HTTP-based delivery mechanisms has recently gained popularity due to their increased flexibility and reliability. Traditional broadcast TV channels are now offered over the Internet, in order to support Live TV for a broad range of consumer devices. Moreover, service providers can greatly benefit from offering external live content (e. g., YouTube, Hulu) in a managed way. Recently, HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) techniques have been proposed in which video clients dynamically adapt their requested video quality level based on the current network and device state. Unlike linear TV, traditional HTTP- and HAS-based video streaming services depend on unicast sessions, leading to a network traffic load proportional to the number of multimedia consumers. In this paper we propose a novel HAS-based video delivery architecture, which features intelligent multicasting and caching in order to decrease the required bandwidth considerably in a Live TV scenario. Furthermore we discuss the autonomic selection of multicasted content to support Video on Demand (VoD) sessions. Powertrace: Network-level Power Profiling for Low-power Wireless Networks
Low-power wireless networks are quickly becoming a critical part of our everyday infrastructure. Power consumption is a critical concern, but power measurement and estimation is a challenge. We present Powertrace,
which to the best of our knowledge is the first system for network-level power profiling of low-power wireless systems. Powertrace uses power state tracking to estimate system power consumption and a structure called energy capsules to attribute energy consumption to activities such as packet transmissions and receptions. With Powertrace, the power consumption of a system can be broken down into individual activities which allows us to answer questions such as “How much energy is spent forwarding packets for node X?”, “How much energy
is spent on control traffic and how much on critical data?”, and “How much energy does application X account for?”. Experiments show that Powertrace is accurate to 94% of the energy consumption of a device. To
demonstrate the usefulness of Powertrace, we use it to experimentally analyze the power behavior of the proposed IETF standard IPv6 RPL routing protocol and a sensor network data collection protocol. Through using Powertrace, we find the highest power consumers and are
able to reduce the power consumption of data collection with 24%. It is our hope that Powertrace will help the community to make empirical energy evaluation a widely used tool in the low-power wireless research community toolbox
Demonstrating Immersive Media Delivery on 5G Broadcast and Multicast Testing Networks
This work presents eight demonstrators and one showcase developed within the
5G-Xcast project. They experimentally demonstrate and validate key technical
enablers for the future of media delivery, associated with multicast and
broadcast communication capabilities in 5th Generation (5G). In 5G-Xcast, three
existing testbeds: IRT in Munich (Germany), 5GIC in Surrey (UK), and TUAS in
Turku (Finland), have been developed into 5G broadcast and multicast testing
networks, which enables us to demonstrate our vision of a converged 5G
infrastructure with fixed and mobile accesses and terrestrial broadcast,
delivering immersive audio-visual media content. Built upon the improved
testing networks, the demonstrators and showcase developed in 5G-Xcast show the
impact of the technology developed in the project. Our demonstrations
predominantly cover use cases belonging to two verticals: Media & Entertainment
and Public Warning, which are future 5G scenarios relevant to multicast and
broadcast delivery. In this paper, we present the development of these
demonstrators, the showcase, and the testbeds. We also provide key findings
from the experiments and demonstrations, which not only validate the technical
solutions developed in the project, but also illustrate the potential technical
impact of these solutions for broadcasters, content providers, operators, and
