Project scheduling under undertainty – survey and research potentials.
The vast majority of the research efforts in project scheduling assume complete information about the scheduling problem to be solved and a static deterministic environment within which the pre-computed baseline schedule will be executed. However, in the real world, project activities are subject to considerable uncertainty, that is gradually resolved during project execution. In this survey we review the fundamental approaches for scheduling under uncertainty: reactive scheduling, stochastic project scheduling, stochastic GERT network scheduling, fuzzy project scheduling, robust (proactive) scheduling and sensitivity analysis. We discuss the potentials of these approaches for scheduling projects under uncertainty.Management; Project management; Robustness; Scheduling; Stability;
DancingLines: An Analytical Scheme to Depict Cross-Platform Event Popularity
Nowadays, events usually burst and are propagated online through multiple
modern media like social networks and search engines. There exists various
research discussing the event dissemination trends on individual medium, while
few studies focus on event popularity analysis from a cross-platform
perspective. Challenges come from the vast diversity of events and media,
limited access to aligned datasets across different media and a great deal of
noise in the datasets. In this paper, we design DancingLines, an innovative
scheme that captures and quantitatively analyzes event popularity between
pairwise text media. It contains two models: TF-SW, a semantic-aware popularity
quantification model, based on an integrated weight coefficient leveraging
Word2Vec and TextRank; and wDTW-CD, a pairwise event popularity time series
alignment model matching different event phases adapted from Dynamic Time
Warping. We also propose three metrics to interpret event popularity trends
between pairwise social platforms. Experimental results on eighteen real-world
event datasets from an influential social network and a popular search engine
validate the effectiveness and applicability of our scheme. DancingLines is
demonstrated to possess broad application potentials for discovering the
knowledge of various aspects related to events and different media
Dialectical Polyptych: an interactive movie installation
Most of the known video games developed by important software companies usually establish an
approach to the cinematic language in an attempt to create a perfect combination of narrative,
visual technique and interaction. Unlike most video games, interactive film narratives normally
involve an interruption in time whenever the spectator has to make choices. “Dialectical
Polyptych” is an interactive movie included in a project called “Characters looking for a spectactor”, which aims to give the spectator on-the-fly control over film editing, thus exploiting the
role of the spectator as an active subject in the presented narrative. This paper presents an
installation based on a mobile device, which allows seamless real-time interactivity with the
movie. Different finger touches in the screen allow the spectator to alternate between two
parallel narratives, both producing a complementary narrative, and change the angle or shot
within each narrative.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Analysing multi-person timing in music and movement : event based methods
Accurate timing of movement in the hundreds of milliseconds range is a hallmark of human activities such as music and dance. Its study requires accurate measurement of the times of events (often called responses) based on the movement or acoustic record. This chapter provides a comprehensive over - view of methods developed to capture, process, analyse, and model individual and group timing [...] This chapter is structured in five main sections, as follows. We start with a review of data capture methods, working, in turn, through a low cost system to research simple tapping, complex movements, use of video, inertial measurement units, and dedicated sensorimotor synchronisation software. This is followed by a section on music performance, which includes topics on the selection of music materials, sound recording, and system latency. The identification of events in the data stream can be challenging and this topic is treated in the next section, first for movement then for music. Finally, we cover methods of analysis, including alignment of the channels, computation of between channel asynchrony errors and modelling of the data set
A Method for the Combination of Stochastic Time Varying Load Effects
The problem of evaluating the probability that a structure becomes unsafe under a
combination of loads, over a given time period, is addressed. The loads and load effects
are modeled as either pulse (static problem) processes with random occurrence time, intensity and a specified shape or intermittent continuous (dynamic problem) processes which
are zero mean Gaussian processes superimposed 'on a pulse process. The load coincidence
method is extended to problems with both nonlinear limit states and dynamic responses,
including the case of correlated dynamic responses. The technique of linearization of a
nonlinear limit state commonly used in a time-invariant problem is investigated for timevarying
combination problems, with emphasis on selecting the linearization point. Results
are compared with other methods, namely the method based on upcrossing rate, simpler
combination rules such as Square Root of Sum of Squares and Turkstra's rule. Correlated
effects among dynamic loads are examined to see how results differ from correlated static
loads and to demonstrate which types of load dependencies are most important, i.e., affect'
the exceedance probabilities the most.
Application of the load coincidence method to code development is briefly discussed.National Science Foundation Grants CME 79-18053 and CEE 82-0759
Seismic Ray Impedance Inversion
This thesis investigates a prestack seismic inversion scheme implemented in the ray
parameter domain. Conventionally, most prestack seismic inversion methods are
performed in the incidence angle domain. However, inversion using the concept of
ray impedance, as it honours ray path variation following the elastic parameter
variation according to Snell’s law, shows the capacity to discriminate different
lithologies if compared to conventional elastic impedance inversion.
The procedure starts with data transformation into the ray-parameter domain and then
implements the ray impedance inversion along constant ray-parameter profiles. With
different constant-ray-parameter profiles, mixed-phase wavelets are initially estimated
based on the high-order statistics of the data and further refined after a proper well-to-seismic
tie. With the estimated wavelets ready, a Cauchy inversion method is used to
invert for seismic reflectivity sequences, aiming at recovering seismic reflectivity
sequences for blocky impedance inversion. The impedance inversion from reflectivity
sequences adopts a standard generalised linear inversion scheme, whose results are
utilised to identify rock properties and facilitate quantitative interpretation. It has also
been demonstrated that we can further invert elastic parameters from ray impedance
values, without eliminating an extra density term or introducing a Gardner’s relation
to absorb this term.
Ray impedance inversion is extended to P-S converted waves by introducing the
definition of converted-wave ray impedance. This quantity shows some advantages in
connecting prestack converted wave data with well logs, if compared with the shearwave
elastic impedance derived from the Aki and Richards approximation to the
Zoeppritz equations. An analysis of P-P and P-S wave data under the framework of
ray impedance is conducted through a real multicomponent dataset, which can reduce
the uncertainty in lithology identification.Inversion is the key method in generating those examples throughout the entire thesis
as we believe it can render robust solutions to geophysical problems. Apart from the
reflectivity sequence, ray impedance and elastic parameter inversion mentioned above,
inversion methods are also adopted in transforming the prestack data from the offset
domain to the ray-parameter domain, mixed-phase wavelet estimation, as well as the
registration of P-P and P-S waves for the joint analysis.
The ray impedance inversion methods are successfully applied to different types of
datasets. In each individual step to achieving the ray impedance inversion, advantages,
disadvantages as well as limitations of the algorithms adopted are detailed. As a
conclusion, the ray impedance related analyses demonstrated in this thesis are highly
competent compared with the classical elastic impedance methods and the author
would like to recommend it for a wider application
