Talk More Listen Less: Energy-Efficient Neighbor Discovery in Wireless Sensor Networks

Neighbor discovery is a fundamental service for initialization and managing network dynamics in wireless sensor networks and mobile sensing applications. In this paper, we present a novel design principle named Talk More Listen Less (TMLL) to reduce idle-listening in neighbor discovery protocols by learning the fact that more beacons lead to fewer wakeups. We propose an extended neighbor discovery model for analyzing wakeup schedules in which beacons are not necessarily placed in the wakeup slots. Furthermore, we are the first to consider channel occupancy rate in discovery protocols by introducing a new metric to trade off among duty-cycle, latency and channel occupancy rate. Guided by the TMLL principle, we have designed Nihao, a family of energy-efficient asynchronous neighbor discovery protocols for symmetric and asymmetric cases. We compared Nihao with existing state of the art protocols via analysis and real-world testbed experiments. The result shows that Nihao significantly outperforms the others both in theory and practice.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures, published in IEEE INFOCOM 201

    Finding Humanity in Design

The Calgary Board of Education’s Design the Shift was a radical step away from typical professional development opportunities. It was a year-long collaboration designed for educators to provoke a shift in practice by redefining curriculum through design. Our definition of design evolved from a linear business model to a much more generous movement. As designers of learning, the participants took up “what really [mattered] to them”, with design becoming an intersection of creativity, place, and community (Chambers, 1998, p. 17). We created opportunities for participants to charge up against an experience, causing them to make, unmake, and remake the curriculum of their classrooms. All experiences inspired the participants to stop, notice, listen and awaken, drawing on Maxine Greene’s (1977) wide-awakeness philosophy

In the world of education, multimedia is used as an effective, attractive, efficient, and easy-to-use learning media in terms of learning assessment. Currently, the method of learning English at YPK Karya High School is still face-to-face and textbooks, the difficulty of students cannot listen to the speech and vocabulary sentences conveyed by the teacher and cannot write the vocabulary sentences correctly, therefore researchers make alternative English learning with multimedia, as an easy and interactive learning solution. The model used is ADDIE, and there are 5 stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects in this study were 1 principal, 2 teachers, 3 students. The methods used to collect data were interviews and observations. After obtaining the results of the analysis, the researcher designs the device requirements and multimedia design with the aim of providing a complete picture of the application. The design was performed using the Flash Professional CS5 application, an application specifically designed to create animation, and Photoshop 7.0 for image creation. Finally, the application for failures, system errors, and application maintenance. The results of the research on interactive learning English with multimedia are very helpful for students of SMA YPK Karya Tangerang because it is simpler and easier to repeat

poster abstractThe ability to mindfully listen to others and oneself fosters the healthiest environment for group discussion. This study explores how applied improvisation and meditation might enhance group communication. Applied improvisation is the use of principles and practices of improvisation in nontheatrical settings. One of the many benefits of applied improvisation is that it teaches students how to fully listen to what others are saying. Meditation is the practice of consciously turning inwards and focusing the thoughts for reflective purposes. Meditation teaches students mindfulness and the ability to listen to their inner monologue. Together applied improvisation and meditation builds community, encourages risk taking, removes judgment of self and others, and promotes acceptance through its joint focus on holistic listening. These concepts will be applied to group discussions/reflections occurring on an educationally-meaningful service trip (alternative spring break) to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago during spring 2015. This is preliminary research using a mixed methods design. First, self-rating questionnaires will be given to the participants. As a participant observer, I will record notes immediately after each reflection session. Finally, qualitative interviews will be conducted the week immediately following the trip with a former trip leader and former trip participants who were also on this specific trip. Mixed methods, or pragmatic research, allows for both quantitative and qualitative data to be gathered in a complementary way. The results will be gathered at the conclusion of the spring break trip. Our anticipated results are that the quality of the group discussion will be enhanced for a safer and more enriching learning environment for participants. If so, these methods can be refined and applied in future service-learning experiences
