Resource Allocation in Multi-user MIMO Networks: Interference Management and Cooperative Communications
Nowadays, wireless communications are becoming so tightly integrated in our daily lives, especially with the global spread of laptops, tablets and smartphones. This has paved the way to dramatically increasing wireless network dimensions in terms of subscribers and amount of flowing data. Therefore, the two important fundamental requirements for the future 5G wireless networks are abilities to support high data traffic and exceedingly low latency. A likely candidate to fulfill these requirements is multicell multi-user multi-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO); also termed as coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission and reception. To achieve the highest possible performance in MU-MIMO networks, a properly designed resource allocation algorithm is needed. Moreover, with the rapidly growing data traffic, interference has become a major limitation in wireless networks. Interference alignment (IA) has been shown to significantly manage the interference and improve the network performance. However, how practically use IA to mitigate interference in a downlink MU-MIMO network still remains an open problem. In this dissertation, we improve the performance of MU-MIMO networks in terms of spectral efficiency, by designing and developing new beamforming algorithms that can efficiently mitigate the interference and allocate the resources. Then we mathematically analyze the performance improvement of MUMIMO networks employing proposed techniques. Fundamental relationships between network parameters and the network performance is revealed, which provide guidance on the wireless networks design. Finally, system level simulations are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed strategies
Robust transmit beamforming design using outage probability specification
Transmit beamforming (precoding) is a powerful technique for enhancing the channel capacity
and reliability of multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. The optimum
exploitation of the benefits provided by MIMO systems can be achieved when a perfect channel
state information at transmitter (CSIT) is available. In practices, however, the channel knowledge
is generally imperfect at transmitter because of the inevitable errors induced by finite
feedback channel capacity, quantization and other physical constraints. Such errors degrade the
system performance severely. Hence, robustness has become a crucial issue.
Current robust designs address the channel imperfections with the worst-case and stochastic approaches.
In worst-case analysis, the channel uncertainties are considered as deterministic and
norm-bounded, and the resulting design is a conservative optimization that guarantees a certain
quality of service (QoS) for every allowable perturbation. The latter approach focuses on the
average performance under the assumption of channel statistics, such as mean and covariance.
The system performance could break down when persistent extreme errors occur. Thus, an
outage probability-based approach is developed by keeping a low probability that channel condition
falls below an acceptable level. Compared to the aforementioned methods, this approach
can optimize the average performance as well as consider the extreme scenarios proportionally.
This thesis implements the outage-probability specification into transmit beamforming design
for three scenarios: the single-user MIMO system and the corresponding adaptive modulation
scheme as well as the multi-user MIMO system. In a single-user MIMO system, the transmit
beamformer provides the maximum average received SNR and ensures the robustness to the
CSIT errors by introducing probabilistic constraint on the instantaneous SNR. Beside the robustness
against channel imperfections, the outage probability-based approach also provides a
tight BER bound for adaptive modulation scheme, so that the maximum transmission rate can
be achieved by taking advantage of transmit beamforming. Moreover, in multi-user MIMO
(MU-MIMO) systems, the leakage power is accounted by probability measurement. The resulting
transmit beamformer is designed based on signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR)
criteria, which maximizes the average received SNR and guarantees the least leakage energy
from the desired user. In such a setting, an outstanding BER performance can be achieved as
well as high reliability of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR).
Given the superior overall performances and significantly improved robustness, the probabilistic
approach provides an attractive alternative to existing robust techniques under imperfect
channel information at transmitter

Traditionelle Einwege-Relais-Techniken (One-Way Relaying [OWR]) nutzen
Halbduplex-Verfahren (HD-Verfahren), welche das Ăbertragungssystem
ausbremst und zu spektralen Verlusten fĂŒhrt. Einerseits erlauben es
Zweiwege-Relais-Techniken (Two-Way Relaying [TWR]), simultan sowohl an das
Verfahren zur Trennung mehrerer Dienstoperatoren (projection based
separation of multiple operators [ProBaSeMO]) vor.
Signal-zu-Interferenz-und-Rausch-VerhÀltnisses (Signal to Interference and
Functionsâ-Methode (POTDC-Methode).
Sendeleistung jedes einzelnen Relais gebunden.
Signal-zu-Verlust-und-Rausch-VerhÀltnis (signal to leakage plus noise
ratio [SLNR]) aufbauen, um Unvollkommenheiten der HF-Schaltkreise
auszugleichen. ZusÀtzlich können alle Designkonzepte auf FD-OWR-Systeme
erweitert werden. To enable ultra-high data rate and ubiquitous coverage in future wireless
networks, new physical layer techniques are desired. Relaying is a
promising technique for future wireless networks since it can boost the
coverage and can provide low cost wireless backhauling solutions, as
compared to traditional wired backhauling solutions via fiber and copper.
Traditional one-way relaying (OWR) techniques suffer from the spectral loss
due to the half-duplex (HD) operation at the relay. On one hand, two-way
relaying (TWR) allows the communication partners to transmit to and/or
receive from the relay simultaneously and thus uses the spectrum more
efficiently than OWR. Therefore, we study two-way relays and more
specifically multi-pair/multi-user TWR systems with amplify-and-forward
(AF) relays. These scenarios suffer from inter-pair or inter-user
interference. To deal with the interference, advanced signal processing
algorithms, in other words, spatial division multiple access (SDMA)
techniques, are desired. On the other hand, if the relay is a full-duplex
(FD) relay, the spectral loss due to a HD operation can also be
compensated. However, in practice, a FD device is hard to realize due to
the strong loop-back self-interference and the limited dynamic range at the
transceiver. Thus, advanced self-interference suppression techniques should
be developed. This thesis contributes to the two goals by developing
optimal and/or efficient algebraic solutions for different scenarios
subject to different utility functions of the system, e.g., sum rate
maximization and transmit power minimization. In the first part of this
thesis, we first study a multi-pair TWR network with a multi-antenna AF
relay. This scenario can be also treated as the sharing of the relay and
the spectrum among multiple operators assuming that different pairs of
users belong to different operators. Existing approaches focus on
interference suppression. We propose a projection based separation of
multiple operators (ProBaSeMO) scheme, which can be easily extended when
each user has multiple antennas or when different system design criteria
are applied. To benchmark the ProBaSeMO scheme, we develop optimal relay
transmit strategies to maximize the system sum rate, minimize the required
transmit power at the relay, or maximize the minimum signal to interference
plus noise ratio (SINR) of the users. Specifically for the sum rate
maximization problem, gradient based methods are developed regardless
whether each user has a single antenna or multiple antennas. To guarantee a
worst-case polynomial time solution, we also develop a polynomial time
algorithm which has been inspired by the polynomial time difference of
convex functions (POTDC) method. Finally, we analyze the conditions for
obtaining the sharing gain in terms of the sum rate. Then we study the sum
rate maximization problem of a multi-pair TWR network with multiple single
antenna AF relays and single antenna users. The resulting sum rate
maximization problem, subject to a total transmit power constraint of the
relays in the network, yields a similar problem structure as in the
previous scenario. Therefore the optimal solution for one scenario can be
used for the other. Moreover, a global optimal solution, which is based on
the polyblock approach, and several suboptimal solutions, which are more
computationally efficient and approximate the optimal solution, are
developed when there is a total transmit power constraint of the relays in
the network or each relay has its own transmit power constraint. We then
shift our focus to a multi-pair TWR network with multiple multi-antenna AF
relays and multiple dumb repeaters. This scenario is more general because
the previous two scenarios can be seen as special realizations of this
scenario. The interference management in this scenario is more challenging
due to the existence of the repeaters. Interference neutralization (IN) is
a solution for dealing with this kind of interference. Thereby, necessary
and sufficient conditions for neutralizing the interference are derived.
Moreover, a general framework to optimize different system utility
functions in this network with or without IN is developed regardless
whether the AF relays in the network have a total transmit power limit or
individual transmit power limits. Finally, we develop the relay transmit
strategy as well as base station (BS) precoding and decoding schemes for a
TWR assisted multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) downlink channel. Compared to the
multi-pair TWR network, this scenario suffers from the co-channel
interference. We develop three suboptimal algorithms which are based on
channel inversion, ProBaSeMO and zero-forcing dirty paper coding (ZFDPC),
which has a low computational complexity, provides a balance between the
performance and the complexity, and suffers only a little when the system
is heavily loaded, respectively. In the second part of this thesis, we
investigate self-interference (SI) suppression techniques to exploit the FD
gain for a point-to-point MIMO system. We first develop SI aware transmit
strategies, which provide a balance between the SI suppression and the
multiplexing gain of the system. To get the best performance, perfect
channel state information (CSI) is needed, which is imperfect in practice.
Thus, worst case transmit strategies to combat the imperfect CSI are
developed, where the CSI errors are modeled deterministically and bounded
by ellipsoids. In real word applications, the RF chain is imperfect. This
affects the performance of the SI suppression techniques and thus results
in residual SI. We develop efficient transmit beamforming techniques, which
are based on the signal to leakage plus noise ratio (SLNR) criterion, to
deal with the imperfections in the RF chain. All the proposed design
concepts can be extended to FD OWR systems

Scheduling heuristic for reduced complexity of coordinated beamforming in large multi-carrier heterogeneous wireless networks
The research and development of wireless communication systems is often based on relatively simple models of the network topology, the radio channel and the radio propagation. This is considered to be mostly appropriate, as only under these conditions the complex technical problems in this field can be fully solved to their theoretical boundaries. However, it can also be the case that algorithms or concepts created under simplified assumptions perform in a significantly different way, when they are applied in more realistic scenarios.
This Thesis presents research work which can be seen as a step towards extending the existing research on Coordinated Beamforming to a complex network scenario, i.e. to a large-scale heterogeneous multi-carrier network. For this purpose, a complex simulation framework has been developed. This is used to analyse the significant implications the conditions in a complex network can have on the achievable performance gains. In more detail, the out of cluster interference and the number of mobile stations are identified as factors which heavily influence the performance. This knowledge is then used to design a novel scheduling heuristic, designed to be able to adapt to the particular network scenarios and to estimate the extent of the achievable performance gains. Our simulation results show that the new heuristic achieves significant performance gains for a low number of mobile stations (by applying zero forcing precoding) as well as for a high number of mobile stations (by a coordinated resource assignment that intelligently pairs mobile stations when applying maximum ratio transmission). The Thesis also demonstrates that the effect of the out of cluster interference can cause the reduction of the achievable gains. Due to the knowledge of performance limiting factors, the scheduling heuristic is in addition able to realize a trade-off between complexity and performance by excluding transmission parameters from the scheduling process which are not expected to be beneficial
Novel transmission and beamforming strategies for multiuser MIMO with various CSIT types
In multiuser multi-antenna wireless systems, the transmission and beamforming strategies that achieve the sum rate capacity depend critically on the acquisition of perfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT).
Accordingly, a high-rate low-latency feedback link between the receiver and the transmitter is required to keep the latter accurately and instantaneously informed about the CSI.
In realistic wireless systems, however, only imperfect CSIT is achievable due to pilot contamination, estimation error, limited feedback and delay, etc.
As an intermediate solution, this thesis investigates novel transmission strategies suitable for various imperfect CSIT scenarios and the associated beamforming techniques to optimise the rate performance.
First, we consider a two-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) under statistical and delayed CSIT.
We mainly focus on linear beamforming and power allocation designs for ergodic sum rate maximisation.
The proposed designs enable higher sum rate than the conventional designs.
Interestingly, we propose a novel transmission framework which makes better use of statistical and delayed CSIT and smoothly bridges between statistical CSIT-based strategies and delayed CSIT-based strategies.
Second, we consider a multiuser massive MIMO system under partial and statistical CSIT.
In order to tackle multiuser interference incurred by partial CSIT, a Rate-Splitting (RS) transmission strategy has been proposed recently.
We generalise the idea of RS into the large-scale array.
By further exploiting statistical CSIT, we propose a novel framework Hierarchical-Rate-Splitting that is particularly suited to massive MIMO systems.
Third, we consider a multiuser Millimetre Wave (mmWave) system with hybrid analog/digital precoding under statistical and quantised CSIT.
We leverage statistical CSIT to design digital precoder for interference mitigation while all feedback overhead is reserved for precise analog beamforming.
For very limited feedback and/or very sparse channels, the proposed precoding scheme yields higher sum rate than the conventional precoding schemes under a fixed total feedback constraint.
Moreover, a RS transmission strategy is introduced to further tackle the multiuser interference, enabling remarkable saving in feedback overhead compared with conventional transmission strategies.
Finally, we investigate the downlink hybrid precoding for physical layer multicasting with a limited number of RF chains.
We propose a low complexity algorithm to compute the analog precoder that achieves near-optimal max-min performance.
Moreover, we derive a simple condition under which the hybrid precoding driven by a limited number of RF chains incurs no loss of optimality with respect to the fully digital precoding case.Open Acces
Quantized Constant Envelope Precoding with PSK and QAM Signaling
Coarsely quantized massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems are
gaining more interest due to their power efficiency. We present a new precoding
technique to mitigate the Multi-User Interference (MUI) and the quantization
distortions in a downlink Multi-User (MU) MIMO system with coarsely Quantized
Constant Envelope (QCE) signals at the transmitter. The transmit signal vector
is optimized for every desired received vector taking into account the QCE
constraint. The optimization is based on maximizing the safety margin to the
decision thresholds of the receiver constellation modulation. Simulation
results show a significant gain in terms of the uncoded Bit Error Ratio (BER)

Advanced multi-dimensional signal processing for wireless systems
The thriving development of wireless communications calls for innovative and advanced signal processing techniques targeting at an enhanced performance in terms of reliability, throughput, robustness, efficiency, flexibility, etc.. This thesis addresses such a compelling demand and presents new and intriguing progress towards fulfilling it. We mainly concentrate on two advanced multi-dimensional signal processing challenges for wireless systems that have attracted tremendous research attention in recent years, multi-carrier Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems and multi-dimensional harmonic retrieval. As the key technologies of wireless communications, the numerous benefits of MIMO and multi-carrier modulation, e.g., boosting the data rate and improving the link reliability, have long been identified and have ignited great research interest. In particular, the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based multi-user MIMO downlink with Space-Division Multiple Access (SDMA) combines the twofold advantages of MIMO and multi-carrier modulation. It is the essential element of IEEE 802.11ac and will also be crucial for the fifth generation of wireless communication systems (5G). Although past investigations on scheduling and precoding design for multi-user MIMO downlink systems have been fruitful, new advances are desired that exploit the multi-carrier nature of the system in a more efficient manner or aim at a higher spectral efficiency. On the other hand, a Filter Bank-based Multi-Carrier modulation (FBMC) featuring a well-concentrated spectrum and thus a low out-of-band radiation is regarded as a promising alternative multi-carrier scheme to OFDM for an effective utilization of spectrum fragments, e.g., in 5G or broadband Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) networks. Unfortunately, the existing transmit-receive processing schemes for FBMC-based MIMO systems suffer from limitations in several aspects, e.g., with respect to the number of supported receive antennas (dimensionality constraint) and channel frequency selectivity. The forms of MIMO settings that have been investigated are still limited to single-user MIMO and simplified multi-user MIMO systems. More advanced techniques are therefore demanded to alleviate the constraints imposed on the state-of-the-art. More sophisticated MIMO scenarios are yet to be explored to further corroborate the benefits of FBMC. In the context of multi-dimensional harmonic retrieval, it has been demonstrated that a higher estimation accuracy can be achieved by using tensors to preserve and exploit the multidimensional nature of the data, e.g., for model order estimation and subspace estimation. Crucial pending topics include how to further incorporate statistical robustness and how to handle time-varying scenarios in an adaptive manner. In Part I of this thesis, we first present an efficient and flexible transmission strategy for OFDM-based multi-user MIMO downlink systems. It consists of a spatial scheduling scheme, efficient multi-carrier ProSched (EMC-ProSched), with an effective scheduling metric tailored for multi-carrier systems and two new precoding algorithms, linear precoding-based geometric mean decomposition (LP-GMD) and low complexity coordinated beamforming (LoCCoBF). These two new precoding schemes can be flexibly chosen according to the dimensions of the system. We also develop a system-level simulator where the parameters for the link-to-system level interface can be calibrated according to a certain standardization framework, e.g., IEEE 802.11ac. Numerical results show that the proposed transmission strategy, apart from guaranteeing the scheduling fairness and a small signaling overhead, achieves a much higher throughput than the state-of-the-art and requires a lower complexity. The remainder of Part I is dedicated to Filter Bank-based Multi-Carrier with Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (FBMC/OQAM)-based MIMO systems. We begin with a thorough overview of FBMC. Then we present new transmit-receive processing techniques for FBMC/OQAM-based MIMO settings ranging from the single-user MIMO case to the Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) downlink considering various degrees of channel frequency selectivity. The use of widely linear processing is first investigated. A two-step receiver is designed for FBMC/OQAM-based point-to-point MIMO systems with low frequency selective channels. It exhibits a significant performance superiority over the linear MMSE receiver. The rationale in this two-step receiver is that the intrinsic interference is first mitigated to facilitate the exploitation of the non-circularity residing in the signals. It sheds light upon further studies on widely linear processing for FBMC/OQAM-based systems. Moreover, two coordinated beamforming algorithms are devised for FBMC/OQAM-based point-to-point MIMO systems to relieve the dimensionality constraint of existing schemes that the number of transmit antennas must be larger than the number of receive antennas. The channel on each subcarrier is assumed to be flat fading, which is categorized as the class of intermediate frequency selective channels. With the Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) known, the precoder designed based on a Zero Forcing (ZF) criterion or the maximization of the Signal-to-Leakage-plus-Noise-Ratio (SLNR) is jointly and iteratively computed with the receiver, leading to an effective mitigation of the intrinsic interference inherent in FBMC/OQAM-based systems. The benefits of the coordinated beamforming concept are successfully translated into the FBMC/OQAM-based multi-user MIMO downlink and the CoMP downlink. Three intrinsic interference mitigating coordinated beamforming (IIM-CBF) schemes are developed. The first two IIM-CBF schemes are proposed for FBMC/OQAM-based multi-user MIMO downlink settings with different dimensions and are able to effectively suppress the Multi-User Interference (MUI) as well as the intrinsic interference. A novel FBMC/OQAM-based CoMP concept is established via the third IIM-CBF scheme which enables the joint transmission of adjacent cells to the cell edge users to combat the strong interference as well as the heavy path loss and to boost the cell edge throughput. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated via extensive numerical simulations. Their convergence behavior is studied, and the complexity issue is also addressed. In addition, the stronger resilience of FBMC over OFDM against frequency misalignments is demonstrated. Furthermore, we cover the case of highly frequency selective channels and provide solutions to the very challenging task of suppressing the MUI, the Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI), as well as the Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) and supporting per-user multi-stream transmissions. Several design criteria of the multi-tap precoders are devised including the Mean Squared Error (MSE) minimization as well as the Signal-to-Leakage-Ratio (SLR) and SLNR maximization. By rendering a larger computational load at the base station, only single-tap spatial receive filters are required at the user terminals with a weaker computational capability, which enhances the applicability of the proposed schemes in real-world multi-user MIMO downlink systems. Part II focuses on the context of multi-dimensional harmonic retrieval. We demonstrate the incorporation of statistical robustness into multi-dimensional model order estimation schemes by substituting the sample covariance matrices of the unfoldings of the measurement tensor with robust covariance estimates. It is observed that in the presence of a very severe contamination of the measurements due to brief sensor failures, the robustified tensor-based model order estimation schemes lead to a satisfactory estimation accuracy. This philosophy of introducing statistical robustness also inspires robust versions of parameter estimation algorithms. Last but not the least, we present a generic framework for Tensor-based subspace tracking via Kronecker-structured projections (TeTraKron) for time-varying multi-dimensional harmonic retrieval problems. It allows to extend arbitrary matrix-based subspace tracking schemes to track the tensor-based subspace estimate in an elegant and efficient manner. By including forward-backward-averaging, we show that TeTraKron can also be employed to devise real-valued tensor-based subspace tracking algorithms. Taking a few matrix-based subspace tracking approaches as an example, a remarkable improvement of the tracking accuracy is observed in case of the TeTraKron-based tensor extensions. The performance of ESPRIT-type parameter estimation schemes is also assessed where the subspace estimates obtained by the proposed TeTraKron-based subspace tracking algorithms are used. We observe that Tensor-ESPRIT combined with a tensor-based subspace tracking scheme significantly outperforms the combination of standard ESPRIT and the corresponding matrix-based subspace tracking method. These results open the way for robust multi-dimensional big data signal processing applications in time-varying environments
