Site Description for the University of Nebraska's Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory

    Get PDF
The Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory is operated by the University of Nebraska. The laboratory is located in the south-central part of the Nebraska Sandhills near Tryon, Nebraska (41 deg. 37' N; 100 deg. 50' W). The laboratory is surrounded on the west and south by native rangeland vegetation, on the south by a large field of corn irrigated by a center pivot, and on the east by wheat stubble. This site is appropriate for moisture stress studies since rainfall is almost always inadequate to meet evaporative demands of agricultural crops during most of the growing season and the sandy soils (Valentine fine sand) at the site do not store large quantities of water. Various levels of water stress are achieved through irrigation from solid set sprinklers

Intrinsic vs. laboratory frame description of the deformed nucleus 48Cr

    Get PDF
The collective yrast band of the nucleus 48^{48}Cr is studied using the spherical shell model and the HFB method. Both approaches produce basically the same axially symmetric intrinsic state up to the - accurately reproduced - observed backbending. Agreement between both calculations extends to most observables. The only significant discrepancy comes from the static moments of inertia and can be attributed to the need of a more refined treatment of pairing correlations in the HFB calculation.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX 3.0 using psfig, 6 Postscript figures included using uufile

Description of the Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment (SCOLE) facility

    Get PDF
A laboratory facility for the study of control laws for large flexible spacecraft is described. The facility fulfills the requirements of the Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment (SCOLE) design challenge for a laboratory experiment, which will allow slew maneuvers and pointing operations. The structural apparatus is described in detail sufficient for modelling purposes. The sensor and actuator types and characteristics are described so that identification and control algorithms may be designed. The control implementation computer and real-time subroutines are also described

Laboratory surveillance of communicable diseases : enteric pathogens

    Get PDF
Laboratories represent a crucial link in the surveillance chain. Since only a small proportion of cases of enteric infections are asked to submit a stool sample, one needs to assess the practices for testing for enteric pathogens and their notification practices. Five local laboratories participated in this study. This included a description of the laboratory practices; capacity for stool sample analysis; awareness of the notification system and the factors which could improve the system at laboratory level.peer-reviewe

Complete analysis of pion-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory to third order

    Get PDF
We consider pion-nucleon scattering in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to third order. All electromagnetic corrections appearing to this order are included. We thus have a consistent description of strong and electromagnetic effects, which allows us to isolate the strong part of the interaction in an unambiguous way. We give pion-nucleon phase shifts up to pion laboratory momenta of 100 MeV and find sizeable differences for the S-waves of the elastic channels compared to previous phase shift analyses. The precise description of the scattering process also allows us to address the question of isospin violation in the strong interaction. For the usually employed triangle relation we find an isospin breaking effect of -0.7% in the S-wave, whereas the P-waves show an effect of -1.5% and -4 to -2.5%, respectively, for pion laboratory momenta between 25 and 100 MeV.Comment: 17 pp, 7 fig

Data communication between data terminal equipment and the JPL administrative data base management system

    Get PDF
Approaches to enabling an installed base of mixed data terminal equipment to access a data base management system designed to work with a specific terminal are discussed. The approach taken by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is described. Background information on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), its organization and a description of the Administrative Data Base Management System is included

    Learn Quantum Mechanics with Haskell

To learn quantum mechanics, one must become adept in the use of various mathematical structures that make up the theory; one must also become familiar with some basic laboratory experiments that the theory is designed to explain. The laboratory ideas are naturally expressed in one language, and the theoretical ideas in another. We present a method for learning quantum mechanics that begins with a laboratory language for the description and simulation of simple but essential laboratory experiments, so that students can gain some intuition about the phenomena that a theory of quantum mechanics needs to explain. Then, in parallel with the introduction of the mathematical framework on which quantum mechanics is based, we introduce a calculational language for describing important mathematical objects and operations, allowing students to do calculations in quantum mechanics, including calculations that cannot be done by hand. Finally, we ask students to use the calculational language to implement a simplified version of the laboratory language, bringing together the theoretical and laboratory ideas.Comment: In Proceedings TFPIE 2015/6, arXiv:1611.0865

Anisotropy of mechanical properties of greywacke

    Get PDF
The paper brings description of the mechanical properties of greywacke sampled in Kobeřice quarry (Lower Carboniferous Culm Basin, Drahany Uplands, Bohemian Massif). Anisotropy of mechanical properties was identified from series of laboratory tests of oriented samples using following procedures: (1) indirect tensile testing, (2) uniaxial compressive testing and (3) triaxial compressive testing. Parameters of Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown failure criteria were determined by evaluation of the obtained laboratory data. The tested greywacke performed relatively high uniaxial compressive strength, roughly 200 MPa. Better fitting by Mohr-Coulomb criterion was identified than by Hoek-Brown one within the investigated interval of confining stresses (0-15 MPa). In addition, Schmidt hammer test was carried out with comparison of several correlation relationships to uniaxial compressive strength which were compared with directly obtained value from laboratory tests

Design and Assessment of an Interactive Digital Tutorial for Undergraduate-Level Sandstone Petrology

    Get PDF
This study describes the goals, features and effectiveness of a digital interactive tutorial which was created to provide undergraduates a 'virtual microscope' resource for learning sandstone petrology. The goal of the tutorial is to provide students exposure to the highly visual subject matter of petrography outside the confines of organized laboratory exercises. The hope is that widespread use of such digital interactive formats will allow students to gain high levels of expertise with description and interpretation of earth materials despite the reduced amounts of hands-on laboratory practice that are allowed by modern curricula.
