    Knowledge-aided bayesian detection in heterogeneous environments

    We address the problem of detecting a signal of interest in the presence of noise with unknown covariance matrix, using a set of training samples. We consider a situation where the environment is not homogeneous, i.e., when the covariance matrices of the primary and the secondary data are different. A knowledge-aided Bayesian framework is proposed, where these covariance matrices are considered as random, and some information about the covariance matrix of the training samples is available. Within this framework, the maximum a priori (MAP) estimate of the primary data covariance matrix is derived. It is shown that it amounts to colored loading of the sample covariance matrix of the secondary data. The MAP estimate is in turn used to yield a Bayesian version of the adaptive matched filter. Numerical simulations illustrate the performance of this detector, and compare it with the conventional adaptive matched filter

    On Detection and Ranking Methods for a Distributed Radio-Frequency Sensor Network: Theory and Algorithmic Implementation

    A theoretical foundation for pre-detection fusion of sensors is needed if the United States Air Force is to ever field a system of distributed and layered sensors that can detect and perform parameter estimation of complex, extended targets in difficult interference environments, without human intervention, in near real-time. This research is relevant to the United States Air Force within its layered sensing and cognitive radar/sensor initiatives. The asymmetric threat of the twenty-first century introduces stressing sensing conditions that may exceed the ability of traditional monostatic sensing systems to perform their required intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. In particular, there is growing interest within the United States Air Force to move beyond single sensor sensing systems, and instead begin fielding and leveraging distributed sensing systems to overcome the inherent challenges imposed by the modern threat space. This thesis seeks to analyze the impact of integrating target echoes in the angular domain, to determine if better detection and ranking performance is achieved through the use of a distributed sensor network. Bespoke algorithms are introduced for detection and ranking ISR missions leveraging a distributed network of radio-frequency sensors: the first set of bespoke algorithms area based upon a depth-based nonparametric detection algorithm, which is to shown to enhance the recovery of targets under lower signal-to-noise ratios than an equivalent monostatic radar system; the second set of bespoke algorithms are based upon random matrix theoretic and concentration of measure mathematics, and demonstrated to outperform the depth-based nonparametric approach. This latter approach shall be shown to be effective across a broad range of signal-to-noise ratios, both positive and negative

    Integration of Clouds to Industrial Communication Networks

    Cloud computing, owing to its ubiquitousness, scalability and on-demand ac- cess, has transformed into many traditional sectors, such as telecommunication and manufacturing production. As the Fifth Generation Wireless Specifica- tions (5G) emerges, the demand on ubiquitous and re-configurable computing resources for handling tremendous traffic from omnipresent mobile devices has been put forward. And therein lies the adaption of cloud-native model in service delivery of telecommunication networks. However, it takes phased approaches to successfully transform the traditional Telco infrastructure to a softwarized model, especially for Radio Access Networks (RANs), which, as of now, mostly relies on purpose-built Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) for computing and processing tasks.On the other hand, Industry 4.0 is leading the digital transformation in manufacturing sectors, wherein the industrial networks is evolving towards wireless connectivity and the automation process managements are shifting to clouds. However, such integration may introduce unwanted disturbances to critical industrial automation processes. This leads to challenges to guaran- tee the performance of critical applications under the integration of different systems.In the work presented in this thesis, we mainly explore the feasibility of inte- grating wireless communication, industrial networks and cloud computing. We have mainly investigated the delay-inhibited challenges and the performance impacts of using cloud-native models for critical applications.     A Mobile Wireless Channel State Recognition Algorihm: Introduction, Definition, and Verification - Sensing for Cognitive Environmental Awareness

    This research includes mobile wireless systems limited by time and frequency dispersive channels. A blind mobile wireless channel (MWC) state recognition (CSR) algorithm that detects hidden coherent nonselective and noncoherent selective processes is verified. Because the algorithm is blind, it releases capacity based on current channel state that traditionally is fixed and reserved for channel gain estimation and distortion mitigation. The CSR algorithm enables cognitive communication system control including signal processing, resource allocation/deallocation, or distortion mitigation selections based on channel coherence states. MWC coherent and noncoherent states, ergodicity, stationarity, uncorrelated scattering, and Markov processes are assumed for each time block. Furthermore, a hidden Markov model (HMM) is utilized to represent the statistical relationships between hidden dispersive processes and observed receive waveform processes. First-order and second-order statistical extracted features support state hard decisions which are combined in order to increase the accuracy of channel state estimates. This research effort has architected, designed, and verified a blind statistical feature recognition algorithm capable of detecting coherent nonselective, single time selective, single frequency selective, or dual selective noncoherent states. A MWC coherence state model (CSM) was designed to represent these hidden dispersive processes. Extracted statistical features are input into a parallel set of trained HMMs that compute state sequence conditional likelihoods. Hard state decisions are combined to produce a single most likely channel state estimate for each time block. To verify the CSR algorithm performance, combinations of hidden state sequences are applied to the CSR algorithm and verified against input hidden state sequences. State sequence recognition accuracy sensitivity was found to be above 99% while specificity was determined to be above 98% averaged across all features, states, and sequences. While these results establish the feasibility of a MWC blind CSR algorithm, optimal configuration requires future research to further improve performance including: 1) characterizing the range of input signal configurations, 2) waveform feature block size reduction, 3) HMM parameter tracking, 4) HMM computational complexity and latency reduction, 5) feature soft decision combining, 6) recursive implementation, 7) interfacing with state based mobile wireless communication control processes, and 8) extension to wired or wireless waveform recognition

    Information-theoretic Reasoning in Distributed and Autonomous Systems

    The increasing prevalence of distributed and autonomous systems is transforming decision making in industries as diverse as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. Despite significant efforts, challenges remain in robustly planning under uncertainty. In this thesis, we present a number of information-theoretic decision rules for improving the analysis and control of complex adaptive systems. We begin with the problem of quantifying the data storage (memory) and transfer (communication) within information processing systems. We develop an information-theoretic framework to study nonlinear interactions within cooperative and adversarial scenarios, solely from observations of each agent's dynamics. This framework is applied to simulations of robotic soccer games, where the measures reveal insights into team performance, including correlations of the information dynamics to the scoreline. We then study the communication between processes with latent nonlinear dynamics that are observed only through a filter. By using methods from differential topology, we show that the information-theoretic measures commonly used to infer communication in observed systems can also be used in certain partially observed systems. For robotic environmental monitoring, the quality of data depends on the placement of sensors. These locations can be improved by either better estimating the quality of future viewpoints or by a team of robots operating concurrently. By robustly handling the uncertainty of sensor model measurements, we are able to present the first end-to-end robotic system for autonomously tracking small dynamic animals, with a performance comparable to human trackers. We then solve the issue of coordinating multi-robot systems through distributed optimisation techniques. These allow us to develop non-myopic robot trajectories for these tasks and, importantly, show that these algorithms provide guarantees for convergence rates to the optimal payoff sequence

    Innovative Techniques for the Retrieval of Earth’s Surface and Atmosphere Geophysical Parameters: Spaceborne Infrared/Microwave Combined Analyses

    With the advent of the first satellites for Earth Observation: Landsat-1 in July 1972 and ERS-1 in May 1991, the discipline of environmental remote sensing has become, over time, increasingly fundamental for the study of phenomena characterizing the planet Earth. The goal of environmental remote sensing is to perform detailed analyses and to monitor the temporal evolution of different physical phenomena, exploiting the mechanisms of interaction between the objects that are present in an observed scene and the electromagnetic radiation detected by sensors, placed at a distance from the scene, operating at different frequencies. The analyzed physical phenomena are those related to climate change, weather forecasts, global ocean circulation, greenhouse gas profiling, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, soil subsidence, and the effects of rapid urbanization processes. Generally, remote sensing sensors are of two primary types: active and passive. Active sensors use their own source of electromagnetic radiation to illuminate and analyze an area of interest. An active sensor emits radiation in the direction of the area to be investigated and then detects and measures the radiation that is backscattered from the objects contained in that area. Passive sensors, on the other hand, detect natural electromagnetic radiation (e.g., from the Sun in the visible band and the Earth in the infrared and microwave bands) emitted or reflected by the object contained in the observed scene. The scientific community has dedicated many resources to developing techniques to estimate, study and analyze Earth’s geophysical parameters. These techniques differ for active and passive sensors because they depend strictly on the type of the measured physical quantity. In my P.h.D. work, inversion techniques for estimating Earth’s surface and atmosphere geophysical parameters will be addressed, emphasizing methods based on machine learning (ML). In particular, the study of cloud microphysics and the characterization of Earth’s surface changes phenomenon are the critical points of this work
