    Risk-based decision support system for life cycle management of industrials plants

    Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de ComputadoresThe objective of this thesis is to contribute for a better understanding of the decision making process in industrial plants specifically in situations with impact in the long term performance of the plant. The way decisions are made, and especially the motivations that lead to the selection of a specific course of action, are sometimes unclear and lack on justification. This is particularly critical in cases where inappropriate decisions drive to an increase on the production costs. Industrial plants are part of these cases, specifically the ones that are still lacking enhanced monitoring technologies and associated decision support systems. Maintenance has been identified as one of the critical areas regarding impact on performance. This is due to the fact that maintenance costs still represent a considerable slice of the production costs. Thus, understanding the way maintenance procedures are executed, and more important, the methods used to decide when maintenance should be developed and how, have been a concern of decision makers in industrial plants. This thesis proposes a methodology to efficiently transform the existing information on the plant behaviour into knowledge that may be used to support the decision process in maintenance activities. The development of an appropriate knowledge model relating the core aspects of the process enables the extraction of new knowledge based on the past experience. This thesis proposes also a methodology to calculate the risk associated to each maintenance situation and, based on the possible actions and on the impacts they may have in the plant costs performance, suggests the most appropriate course. The suggestion is made aiming the minimization of the life cycle costs. Results have been validated in test cases performed both at simulation and real industrial environments. The results obtained at the tests cases demonstrated the feasibility of the developed methodology as well as its adequateness and applicability in the domain of interest

    Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

    An agent-based model for the sustainable management of navigation activities in the Saint Lawrence Estuary

    Natural resource managers of protected areas are concerned with the management of human activities potentially harmful to ecosystems’ health and/or integrity. These systems where human interact with natural resources are called social-ecological systems (SES) and possess the characteristics of complex adaptive systems (e.g. co-evolution). The SES of navigation activities and whales interacting within the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park (SSLMP) and the projected St. Lawrence Estuary Marine Protected Area in Quebec, Canada, has been investigated and modelled using the agent-based modelling (ABM) technology: The resulting Marine Mammal and Maritime Traffic Simulator (3MTSim) is designed to support marine protected area managers in their effort to reduce the frequency and intensity of boat-whale co-occurrences within the St Lawrence Estuary and mitigate the risks of vessel strikes. This dissertation presents the building process of the 3MTSim’s boat ABM. The knowledge extracted from analyses of gathered and collected data relative to all forms of sailing and motorized navigation supported the decision to first focus on the modelling of commercial excursions (including whale-watching trips), cargo ships, and cruise liners. Data analyses allowed, for the first time, to draw a comprehensive portrait of navigation activities throughout the region where whales congregate in great numbers during the summer season. Among others, a quantitative analysis led to an accurate estimate of the total navigation time within each separate ecosystem of the region. This study identified areas intensively used by maritime traffic such as the mouth of the Saguenay River and offshore Les Escoumins. Several field campaigns carried out in the context of this project allowed to link some undesirable collective patterns of whale-watching excursions (regarding both whale conservation and SSLMP visitors’ experience) with contextual factors including whale species’ abundance and distribution, management gaps, and companies and captains’ decisions. The bounded rationality framework was chosen to investigate captains’ decision making and more generally the dynamics of the whole whale-watching SES. A portrait of the decision strategies followed by whale-watching captains has been drawn. The results will lead to a set of recommendations regarding the sustainable management of whale-watching excursions in and around the SSLMP. Results from field investigations and data analyses have fed the model building process, including an explicit representation of the whale-watching captains’ decision making. Data analyses revealed that cargo ships and ocean liners tend to follow predictable routes with low variability. Consequently, a complex behavioural modelling approach was deemed unnecessary in favour of a statistical approach, justified by the large volume of high-quality historical data available for both components. The pattern-oriented modelling approach proved appropriate for selecting a valid model of whale-watching excursions. Model simulations confirmed that whale-watching captains do favour the observation of a few rare rorqual species (e.g. humpback whales), leaving aside the most abundant one, namely the minke whales. Therefore, 3MTSim was run to quantify the impact that whale-watching captains changing their decision strategy could have on both whale exposure to boats (conservation concern) and excursion content (commercial concern). It was found that captains willing to avoid crowded observation sites and/or seeking to increase the diversity of species observed could have statistically significant benefits regarding conservation issues without affecting important features of their excursions. Finally, the convincing performance of the 3MTSim’s boat ABM ensures its safe use as a decision-support tool for management insofar as model limitations are understood and accounted for in the results and discussion

    Emergence through conflict : the Multi-Disciplinary Design System (MDDS)

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (p. 413-430).This dissertation proposes a framework and a group of systematic methodologies to construct a computational Multi-Disciplinary Design System (MDDS) that can support the design of complex systems within a variety of domains. The way in which the resulting design system is constructed, and the capabilities it brings to bare, are totally different from the methods used in traditional sequential design. The MDDS embraces diverse areas of research that include design science, systems theory, artificial intelligence, design synthesis and generative algorithms, mathematical modeling and disciplinary analyses, optimization theory, data management and model integration, and experimental design among many others. There are five phases to generate the MDDS. These phases involve decomposition, formulation, modeling, integration, and exploration. These phases are not carried out in a sequential manner, but rather in a continuous move back and forth between the different phases. The process of building the MDDS begins with a top-down decomposition of a design concept. The design, seen as an object, is decomposed into its components and aspects, while the design, seen as a process, is decomposed into developmental levels and design activities. Then based on the process decomposition, the architecture of the MDDS is formulated into hierarchical levels each of which comprises a group of design cycles that include design modules at different degrees of abstraction. Based on the design object decomposition, the design activities which include synthesis, analysis, evaluation and optimization are modeled within the design modules.(cont.) Subsequently through a bottom-up approach, the design modules are integrated into a data flow network. This network forms MDDS as an integrated system that acts as a holistic structured functional unit that explores the design space in search of satisfactory solutions. The MDDS emergent properties are not detectable through the properties and behaviors of its parts, and can only be enucleated through a holistic approach. The MDDS is an adaptable system that is continuously dependent on, and responsive to, the uncertainties of the design process. The evolving MDDS is thus characterized a multi-level, multi-module, multi-variable and multi-resolution system.     Foundations of systems and properties:methodological support for modeling properties of software-intensive systems

    Engineering of software-intensive systems is concerned with the creation and evolution of systems that shall exhibit desired properties in their execution as well as development environment. In this context, the motivation of this thesis, derived from current development practice, was twofold. Firstly, software development methods are increasingly required to extend their scope of applicability towards systems engineering. As a consequence, their modeling approaches must be able to cope with a larger diversity of systems and consequently a larger diversity of properties. But these approaches still need to provide a smooth transition to software modeling. Secondly, non-functional properties, which are largely a result of this implicit systems scope, play a major role in the way we design our software-intensive systems. The conceptual aids of current development methods, however, are still less mature in their explicit support for non-functional properties compared with their ability to support functional ones. The principal objective of this thesis is to contribute toward an improved model-based treatment of non-functional properties in development methods. Because we cannot discuss properties independently of the objects they are ascribed to, this objective amounts to a progression from modeling of software and its properties to modeling of interrelated systems and their properties. To address this aim a philosophy of properties and systems is proposed. The philosophy is expressed as a holistic conceptual model of properties and/of systems. It is complemented with some basic rules, which we call tenets. Tenets formulate how we use the philosophical knowledge. The conceptual model offers the foundations for a more generalized understanding of those fundamentally different types of systems and different types of properties that are relevant in software-intensive systems engineering. The generality of our holistic model draws the benefits from our investigations in the areas of systems science, cognitive science, and basic philosophy. The model helps to scrutinize and make sense of the large amount of data in the literature about "non-functional" issues in software engineering. The model is applicable in the derivation of methodological building blocks that can be incorporated into development methods. The building blocks include (a) a general model to discover stakeholders and properties for a given system, (b) a principled manner to trace the fundamentally different types of properties through hierarchies of systems, and (c) a proposal for the representation of systems, their properties and property traces in the UML. The concrete application of the gained knowledge to software engineering results in a proposal for a context-sensitive, customizable quality attribute model. It also results in a proposal on how to structure quality descriptions of software components. In order for such descriptions to be standardized and possibly tool-automated, this thesis proposes to utilize the Reusable Asset Specification and suggests alternatives for its XML-based representation

    In the last three decades information modelling and knowledge bases have become essentially important subjects not only in academic communities related to information systems and computer science but also in the business area where information technology is applied. The series of European – Japanese Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases (EJC) originally started as a co-operation initiative between Japan and Finland in 1982. The practical operations were then organised by professor Ohsuga in Japan and professors Hannu Kangassalo and Hannu Jaakkola in Finland (Nordic countries). Geographical scope has expanded to cover Europe and also other countries. Workshop characteristic - discussion, enough time for presentations and limited number of participants (50) / papers (30) - is typical for the conference. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: 1. Conceptual modelling: Modelling and specification languages; Domain-specific conceptual modelling; Concepts, concept theories and ontologies; Conceptual modelling of large and heterogeneous systems; Conceptual modelling of spatial, temporal and biological data; Methods for developing, validating and communicating conceptual models. 2. Knowledge and information modelling and discovery: Knowledge discovery, knowledge representation and knowledge management; Advanced data mining and analysis methods; Conceptions of knowledge and information; Modelling information requirements; Intelligent information systems; Information recognition and information modelling. 3. Linguistic modelling: Models of HCI; Information delivery to users; Intelligent informal querying; Linguistic foundation of information and knowledge; Fuzzy linguistic models; Philosophical and linguistic foundations of conceptual models. 4. Cross-cultural communication and social computing: Cross-cultural support systems; Integration, evolution and migration of systems; Collaborative societies; Multicultural web-based software systems; Intercultural collaboration and support systems; Social computing, behavioral modeling and prediction. 5. Environmental modelling and engineering: Environmental information systems (architecture); Spatial, temporal and observational information systems; Large-scale environmental systems; Collaborative knowledge base systems; Agent concepts and conceptualisation; Hazard prediction, prevention and steering systems. 6. Multimedia data modelling and systems: Modelling multimedia information and knowledge; Contentbased multimedia data management; Content-based multimedia retrieval; Privacy and context enhancing technologies; Semantics and pragmatics of multimedia data; Metadata for multimedia information systems. Overall we received 56 submissions. After careful evaluation, 16 papers have been selected as long paper, 17 papers as short papers, 5 papers as position papers, and 3 papers for presentation of perspective challenges. We thank all colleagues for their support of this issue of the EJC conference, especially the program committee, the organising committee, and the programme coordination team. The long and the short papers presented in the conference are revised after the conference and published in the Series of “Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence” by IOS Press (Amsterdam). The books “Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases” are edited by the Editing Committee of the conference.     Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations.     Unconventional programming: non-programmable systems

    Die Forschung aus dem Bereich der unkonventionellen und natĂŒrlichen Informationsverarbeitungssysteme verspricht kontrollierbare Rechenprozesse in ungewöhnlichen Medien zu realisieren, zum Beispiel auf der molekularen Ebene oder in Bakterienkolonien. Vielversprechende Eigenschaften dieser Systeme sind das nichtlineare Verhalten und der hohe VerknĂŒpfungsgrad der beteiligten Komponenten in Analogie zu Neuronen im Gehirn. Da aber Programmierung meist auf Prinzipien wie Modularisierung, Kapselung und Vorhersagbarkeit beruht sind diese Systeme oft schwer- bzw. unprogrammierbar. Im Gegensatz zu vielen Arbeiten ĂŒber unkonventionelle Rechensysteme soll in dieser Arbeit aber nicht hauptsĂ€chlich nach neuen rechnenden Systemen und Anwendungen dieser gesucht werden. Stattdessen konzentriert sich diese Dissertation auf unkonventionelle ProgrammieransĂ€tze, die sowohl fĂŒr unkonventionelle Computer als auch fĂŒr herkommliche digitale Rechner neue Perspektiven eröffnen sollen. HauptsĂ€chlich in Bezug auf ein Modell kĂŒnstlicher chemischer Neuronen werden AnsĂ€tze fĂŒr unkonventionelle Programmierverfahren, basierend auf EvolutionĂ€ren Algorithmen, Informationstheorie und Selbstorganisation bis hin zur Selbstassemblierung untersucht. Ein spezielles Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Problem der Symbolkodierung: Oft gibt es mehrere oder sogar unendlich viele Möglichkeiten, Informationen in den ZustĂ€nden eines komplexen dynamischen Systems zu kodieren. In Neuronalen Netzen gibt es unter anderem die Spikefrequenz aber auch Populationskodes. In AbhĂ€ngigkeit von den weiteren Eigenschaften des Systems, beispielsweise von der Informationsverarbeitungsaufgabe und dem gewĂŒnschten Eingabe-Ausgabeverhalten dĂŒrften sich verschiedene Kodierungen als unterschiedlich nĂŒtzlich erweisen. Daher werden hier Methoden betrachtet um die verschiedene Symbolkodierungmethoden zu evaluieren, zu analysieren und um nach neuen, geeigneten Kodierungen zu suchen.Unconventional and natural computing research offers controlled information modification processes in uncommon media, for example on the molecular scale or in bacteria colonies. Promising aspects of such systems are often the non-linear behavior and the high connectivity of the involved information processing components in analogy to neurons in the nervous system. Unfortunately, such properties make the system behavior hard to understand, hard to predict and thus also hard to program with common engineering principles like modularization and composition, leading to the term of non-programmable systems. In contrast to many unconventional computing works that are often focused on finding novel computing substrates and potential applications, unconventional programming approaches for such systems are the theme of this thesis: How can new programming concepts open up new perspectives for unconventional but hopefully also for traditional, digital computing systems? Mostly based on a model of artificial wet chemical neurons, different unconventional programming approaches from evolutionary algorithms, information theory, self-organization and self-assembly are explored. A particular emphasis is given on the problem of symbol encodings: Often there are multiple or even an unlimited number of possibilities to encode information in the phase space of dynamical systems, e.g. spike frequencies or population coding in neural networks. But different encodings will probably be differently useful, dependent on the system properties, the information transformation task and the desired connectivity to other systems. Hence methods are investigated that can evaluate, analyse as well as identify suitable symbol encoding schemes
