Enabling collaboration in virtual reality navigators
In this paper we characterize a feature superset for Collaborative
Virtual Reality Environments (CVRE), and derive a component
framework to transform stand-alone VR navigators into full-fledged
multithreaded collaborative environments. The contributions of our
approach rely on a cost-effective and extensible technique for
loading software components into separate POSIX threads for
rendering, user interaction and network communications, and adding a
top layer for managing session collaboration. The framework recasts
a VR navigator under a distributed peer-to-peer topology for scene
and object sharing, using callback hooks for broadcasting remote
events and multicamera perspective sharing with avatar interaction.
We validate the framework by applying it to our own ALICE VR
Navigator. Experimental results show that our approach has good
performance in the collaborative inspection of complex models.Postprint (published version
Intelligent negotiation mechanism for supporting the interoperability within the sensing enterprise
The authors wish to acknowledge the support of the European Commission through the funding of the UNITE, MSEE and IMAGINE FP7 projects, and the European Space Agency - Concurrent Design Facility (ESA-CDF) for their support in the development of the business case presented in this paper.The Sensing Enterprise is a novel concept that refers to an enterprise anticipating future decisions by using multi-dimensional information captured through physical and virtual objects. The Sensing Enterprise concept is shifting focus towards a borderless enterprise, having at its core the collaboration and continuous interactions among smart objects and systems. But in the actual competitive and global business context, the maintenance of the collaboration environment through the interoperation among heterogeneous smart virtual and physical objects in a collaborative organizational environment becomes difficult to achieve. Therefore, in a dynamic context a change in any component of the networked partners affects the others, creating difficulties to sustain operating networked environment. In this respect, this paper proposes an intelligent negotiation framework as a key mechanism to achieve and maintain the interoperability between the organisations' smart objects and applications, and its validation in an industrial scenario. To allow a sustainable, flexible and generic approach towards the infrastructure implementation in global scale, a cloud-based platform is proposed for setting of the Sensing Enterprise framework.publishersversionpublishe
CLPL: Providing software infrastructure for the systematic and effective construction of complex collaborative learning systems
Over the last decade, e-Learning and in particular Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) needs have been evolving accordingly with more and more demanding pedagogical and technological requirements. As a result, high customization and flexibility are a must in this context, meaning that collaborative learning practices need to be continuously adapted, adjusted, and personalized to each specific target learning group. These very demanding needs of the CSCL domain represent a great challenge for the research community on software development to satisfy.
This contribution presents and evaluates a previous research effort in the form of a generic software infrastructure called Collaborative Learning Purpose Library (CLPL) with the aim of meeting the current and demanding needs found in the CSCL domain. To this end, we experiment with the CLPL in order to offer an advanced reuse-based service-oriented software engineering methodology for developing CSCL applications in an effective and timely fashion. A validation process is provided by reporting on the use of the CLPL platform as the primary resource for the Master's thesis courses at the Open University of Catalonia when developing complex software applications in the CSCL domain.

The Anatomy of the Grid - Enabling Scalable Virtual Organizations
"Grid" computing has emerged as an important new field, distinguished from
conventional distributed computing by its focus on large-scale resource
sharing, innovative applications, and, in some cases, high-performance
orientation. In this article, we define this new field. First, we review the
"Grid problem," which we define as flexible, secure, coordinated resource
sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions, and
resources-what we refer to as virtual organizations. In such settings, we
encounter unique authentication, authorization, resource access, resource
discovery, and other challenges. It is this class of problem that is addressed
by Grid technologies. Next, we present an extensible and open Grid
architecture, in which protocols, services, application programming interfaces,
and software development kits are categorized according to their roles in
enabling resource sharing. We describe requirements that we believe any such
mechanisms must satisfy, and we discuss the central role played by the
intergrid protocols that enable interoperability among different Grid systems.
Finally, we discuss how Grid technologies relate to other contemporary
technologies, including enterprise integration, application service provider,
storage service provider, and peer-to-peer computing. We maintain that Grid
concepts and technologies complement and have much to contribute to these other
