    Design and optimization of a compact laser-driven proton beamline

    Laser-accelerated protons, generated by irradiating a solid target with a short, energetic laser pulse at high intensity (I > 1018W·cm-2), represent a complementary if not outperforming source compared to conventional accelerators, due to their intrinsic features, such as high beam charge and short bunch duration. However, the broadband energy spectrum of these proton sources is a bottleneck that precludes their use in applications requiring a more reduced energy spread. Consequently, in recent times strong effort has been put to overcome these limits and to develop laser-driven proton beamlines with low energy spread. In this paper, we report on beam dynamics simulations aiming at optimizing a laser-driven beamline - i.e. a laser-based proton source coupled to conventional magnetic beam manipulation devices - producing protons with a reduced energy spread, usable for applications. The energy range of investigation goes from 2 to 20 MeV, i.e. the typical proton energies that can be routinely obtained using commercial TW-power class laser systems. Our beamline design is capable of reducing the energy spread below 20%, still keeping the overall transmission efficiency around 1% and producing a proton spot-size in the range of 10 mm2.     Dynamic Composite Data Physicalization Using Wheeled Micro-Robots

    This paper introduces dynamic composite physicalizations, a new class of physical visualizations that use collections of self-propelled objects to represent data. Dynamic composite physicalizations can be used both to give physical form to well-known interactive visualization techniques, and to explore new visualizations and interaction paradigms. We first propose a design space characterizing composite physicalizations based on previous work in the fields of Information Visualization and Human Computer Interaction. We illustrate dynamic composite physicalizations in two scenarios demonstrating potential benefits for collaboration and decision making, as well as new opportunities for physical interaction. We then describe our implementation using wheeled micro-robots capable of locating themselves and sensing user input, before discussing limitations and opportunities for future work

    Transient Overload Characteristics of PM-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machines, Including Sensorless Control Feasibility

    Synchronous reluctance machines are a highefficiency alternative to induction motors for variable-speed applications. To mitigate the well-known downside of their lower power factor, permanent-magnet-assisted topologies, in which either rare-earth or ferrite magnets are inserted into the rotor in suitable quantities, are often adopted. The design and optimization procedures for PM-assisted topologies have been thoroughly discussed in the related literature. This paper compares synchronous reluctance machines assisted with NdFeB and ferrite magnets, focusing on torque overload capability and feasibility of saliency-based position estimation algorithms. Three prototypes were realized and tested. They all have the stator of a commercial induction motor and the same customdesigned synchronous reluctance rotor laminations. Of the three prototypes, one is a pure synchronous reluctance motor, and the other two have NdFeB and ferrite magnets, respectively; both are designed to give the same torque at rated current. Results from simulations and experiments are presented comparing the transient overload capability of the three machines, in terms of torque capability and de-magnetization limit. A dynamic thermal model of the machines was developed within this scope. Moreover, the feasibility of saliency-based sensorless methods was investigated and is presented here for the three machines, both at high- and low-current loads. The results of the paper suggest that the ferrite-assisted solution is the best candidate for replacing induction motors in variable-speed applications, for its optimal tradeoff between performance and cost

    Electronics systems test laboratory testing of shuttle communications systems

    Shuttle communications and tracking systems space to space and space to ground compatibility and performance evaluations are conducted in the NASA Johnson Space Center Electronics Systems Test Laboratory (ESTL). This evaluation is accomplished through systems verification/certification tests using orbiter communications hardware in conjunction with other shuttle communications and tracking external elements to evaluate end to end system compatibility and to verify/certify that overall system performance meets program requirements before manned flight usage. In this role, the ESTL serves as a multielement major ground test facility. The ESTL capability and program concept are discussed. The system test philosophy for the complex communications channels is described in terms of the major phases. Results of space to space and space to ground systems tests are presented. Several examples of the ESTL's unique capabilities to locate and help resolve potential problems are discussed in detail

    Magnetic gear dynamics for servo control

    This paper considers the analysis and application of magnetic gearbox and magnetic coupling technologies and issues surrounding their use for motion control servo systems. Analysis of a prototype magnetic gear is used as a basis for demonstrating the underlying nonlinear torque transfer characteristic, nonlinear damping, and `pole-slipping' when subject to over-torque (overload) conditions. It is also shown how `pole-slipping' results in consequential loss of control. A theoretical investigation into the suppression of mechanical torsional resonances in transmission systems encompassing these highly-compliant magnetically-coupled components is included, along with experimental results, from a demonstrator drive-train. The automatic detection of pole-slipping, and recovery scenarios, is also presented

    Cogging torque reduction in brushless motors by a nonlinear control technique

    This work addresses the problem of mitigating the effects of the cogging torque in permanent magnet synchronous motors, particularly brushless motors, which is a main issue in precision electric drive applications. In this work, a method for mitigating the effects of the cogging torque is proposed, based on the use of a nonlinear automatic control technique known as feedback linearization that is ideal for underactuated dynamic systems. The aim of this work is to present an alternative to classic solutions based on the physical modification of the electrical machine to try to suppress the natural interaction between the permanent magnets and the teeth of the stator slots. Such modifications of electric machines are often expensive because they require customized procedures, while the proposed method does not require any modification of the electric drive. With respect to other algorithmic-based solutions for cogging torque reduction, the proposed control technique is scalable to different motor parameters, deterministic, and robust, and hence easy to use and verify for safety-critical applications. As an application case example, the work reports the reduction of the oscillations for the angular position control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor vs. classic PI (proportional-integrative) cascaded control. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is suitable to be implemented in low-cost embedded control units
