    Thai Multi-Document Summarization: Unit Segmentation, Unit-Graph Formulation, and Unit Selection

    There have been several challenges in summarization of Thai multiple documents since Thai language itself lacks of explicit word/phrase/sentence boundaries. This paper gives definition of Thai Elementary Discourse Unit (TEDU) and then presents our three-stage summarization process. Towards implementation of this process, we propose unit segmentation using TEDUs and their derivatives, unit-graph formation using iterative unit weighting and cosine similarity, and unit selection using highest-weight priority, redundancy removal, and post-selection weight recalculation. To examine performance of the proposed methods, a number of experiments are conducted using fifty sets of Thai news articles with their manually constructed reference summary. By three common evaluation measures of ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2, and ROUGE-SU4, the results evidence that (1) our TEDU-based summarization outperforms paragraph-based summarization, (2) our iterative weighting is superior to traditional TF-IDF, (3) the highest-weight priority without centroid preference and unit redundancy consideration helps improving summary quality, and (4) post-selection weight recalculation tends to raise summarization performance under some certain circumstances

    Similarity measures and diversity rankings for query-focused sentence extraction

    Query-focused sentence extraction generally refers to an extractive approach to select a set of sentences that responds to a specific information need. It is one of the major approaches employed in multi-document summarization, focused summarization, and complex question answering. The major advantage of most extractive methods over the natural language processing (NLP) intensive methods is that they are relatively simple, theoretically sound – drawing upon several supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, and often produce equally strong empirical performance. Many research areas, including information retrieval and text mining, have recently moved toward the extractive query-focused sentence generation as its outputs have great potential to support every day‟s information seeking activities. Particularly, as more information have been created and stored online, extractive-based summarization systems may quickly utilize several ubiquitous resources, such as Google search results and social medias, to extract summaries to answer users‟ queries.This thesis explores how the performance of sentence extraction tasks can be improved to create higher quality outputs. Specifically, two major areas are investigated. First, we examine the issue of natural language variation which affects the similarity judgment of sentences. As sentences are much shorter than documents, they generally contain fewer occurring words. Moreover, the similarity notions of sentences are different than those of documents as they tend to be very specific in meanings. Thus many document-level similarity measures are likely to perform well at this level. In this work, we address these issues in two application domains. First, we present a hybrid method, utilizing both unsupervised and supervised techniques, to compute the similarity of interrogative sentences for factoid question reuse. Next, we propose a novel structural similarity measure based on sentence semantics for paraphrase identification and textual entailment recognition tasks. The empirical evaluations suggest the effectiveness of the proposed methods in improving the accuracy of sentence similarity judgments.Furthermore, we examine the effects of the proposed similarity measure in two specific sentence extraction tasks, focused summarization and complex question answering. In conjunction with the proposed similarity measure, we also explore the issues of novelty, redundancy, and diversity in sentence extraction. To that end, we present a novel approach to promote diversity of extracted sets of sentences based on the negative endorsement principle. Negative-signed edges are employed to represent a redundancy relation between sentence nodes in graphs. Then, sentences are reranked according to the long-term negative endorsements from random walk. Additionally, we propose a unified centrality ranking and diversity ranking based on the aforementioned principle.     Survey of the State of the Art in Natural Language Generation: Core tasks, applications and evaluation

    This paper surveys the current state of the art in Natural Language Generation (NLG), defined as the task of generating text or speech from non-linguistic input. A survey of NLG is timely in view of the changes that the field has undergone over the past decade or so, especially in relation to new (usually data-driven) methods, as well as new applications of NLG technology. This survey therefore aims to (a) give an up-to-date synthesis of research on the core tasks in NLG and the architectures adopted in which such tasks are organised; (b) highlight a number of relatively recent research topics that have arisen partly as a result of growing synergies between NLG and other areas of artificial intelligence; (c) draw attention to the challenges in NLG evaluation, relating them to similar challenges faced in other areas of Natural Language Processing, with an emphasis on different evaluation methods and the relationships between them.Comment: Published in Journal of AI Research (JAIR), volume 61, pp 75-170. 118 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

    Discourse analysis of arabic documents and application to automatic summarization

    Dans un discours, les textes et les conversations ne sont pas seulement une juxtaposition de mots et de phrases. Ils sont plutôt organisés en une structure dans laquelle des unités de discours sont liées les unes aux autres de manière à assurer à la fois la cohérence et la cohésion du discours. La structure du discours a montré son utilité dans de nombreuses applications TALN, y compris la traduction automatique, la génération de texte et le résumé automatique. L'utilité du discours dans les applications TALN dépend principalement de la disponibilité d'un analyseur de discours performant. Pour aider à construire ces analyseurs et à améliorer leurs performances, plusieurs ressources ont été annotées manuellement par des informations de discours dans des différents cadres théoriques. La plupart des ressources disponibles sont en anglais. Récemment, plusieurs efforts ont été entrepris pour développer des ressources discursives pour d'autres langues telles que le chinois, l'allemand, le turc, l'espagnol et le hindi. Néanmoins, l'analyse de discours en arabe standard moderne (MSA) a reçu moins d'attention malgré le fait que MSA est une langue de plus de 422 millions de locuteurs dans 22 pays. Le sujet de thèse s'intègre dans le cadre du traitement automatique de la langue arabe, plus particulièrement, l'analyse de discours de textes arabes. Cette thèse a pour but d'étudier l'apport de l'analyse sémantique et discursive pour la génération de résumé automatique de documents en langue arabe. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous proposons d'étudier la théorie de la représentation discursive segmentée (SDRT) qui propose un cadre logique pour la représentation sémantique de phrases ainsi qu'une représentation graphique de la structure du texte où les relations de discours sont de nature sémantique plutôt qu'intentionnelle. Cette théorie a été étudiée pour l'anglais, le français et l'allemand mais jamais pour la langue arabe. Notre objectif est alors d'adapter la SDRT à la spécificité de la langue arabe afin d'analyser sémantiquement un texte pour générer un résumé automatique. Nos principales contributions sont les suivantes : Une étude de la faisabilité de la construction d'une structure de discours récursive et complète de textes arabes. En particulier, nous proposons : Un schéma d'annotation qui couvre la totalité d'un texte arabe, dans lequel chaque constituant est lié à d'autres constituants. Un document est alors représenté par un graphe acyclique orienté qui capture les relations explicites et les relations implicites ainsi que des phénomènes de discours complexes, tels que l'attachement, la longue distance du discours pop-ups et les dépendances croisées. Une nouvelle hiérarchie des relations de discours. Nous étudions les relations rhétoriques d'un point de vue sémantique en se concentrant sur leurs effets sémantiques et non pas sur la façon dont elles sont déclenchées par des connecteurs de discours, qui sont souvent ambigües en arabe. o une analyse quantitative (en termes de connecteurs de discours, de fréquences de relations, de proportion de relations implicites, etc.) et une analyse qualitative (accord inter-annotateurs et analyse des erreurs) de la campagne d'annotation. Un outil d'analyse de discours où nous étudions à la fois la segmentation automatique de textes arabes en unités de discours minimales et l'identification automatique des relations explicites et implicites du discours. L'utilisation de notre outil pour résumer des textes arabes. Nous comparons la représentation de discours en graphes et en arbres pour la production de résumés.Within a discourse, texts and conversations are not just a juxtaposition of words and sentences. They are rather organized in a structure in which discourse units are related to each other so as to ensure both discourse coherence and cohesion. Discourse structure has shown to be useful in many NLP applications including machine translation, natural language generation and language technology in general. The usefulness of discourse in NLP applications mainly depends on the availability of powerful discourse parsers. To build such parsers and improve their performances, several resources have been manually annotated with discourse information within different theoretical frameworks. Most available resources are in English. Recently, several efforts have been undertaken to develop manually annotated discourse information for other languages such as Chinese, German, Turkish, Spanish and Hindi. Surprisingly, discourse processing in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) has received less attention despite the fact that MSA is a language with more than 422 million speakers in 22 countries. Computational processing of Arabic language has received a great attention in the literature for over twenty years. Several resources and tools have been built to deal with Arabic non concatenative morphology and Arabic syntax going from shallow to deep parsing. However, the field is still very vacant at the layer of discourse. As far as we know, the sole effort towards Arabic discourse processing was done in the Leeds Arabic Discourse Treebank that extends the Penn Discourse TreeBank model to MSA. In this thesis, we propose to go beyond the annotation of explicit relations that link adjacent units, by completely specifying the semantic scope of each discourse relation, making transparent an interpretation of the text that takes into account the semantic effects of discourse relations. In particular, we propose the first effort towards a semantically driven approach of Arabic texts following the Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT). Our main contributions are: A study of the feasibility of building a recursive and complete discourse structures of Arabic texts. In particular, we propose: An annotation scheme for the full discourse coverage of Arabic texts, in which each constituent is linked to other constituents. A document is then represented by an oriented acyclic graph, which captures explicit and implicit relations as well as complex discourse phenomena, such as long-distance attachments, long-distance discourse pop-ups and crossed dependencies. A novel discourse relation hierarchy. We study the rhetorical relations from a semantic point of view by focusing on their effect on meaning and not on how they are lexically triggered by discourse connectives that are often ambiguous, especially in Arabic. A thorough quantitative analysis (in terms of discourse connectives, relation frequencies, proportion of implicit relations, etc.) and qualitative analysis (inter-annotator agreements and error analysis) of the annotation campaign. An automatic discourse parser where we investigate both automatic segmentation of Arabic texts into elementary discourse units and automatic identification of explicit and implicit Arabic discourse relations. An application of our discourse parser to Arabic text summarization. We compare tree-based vs. graph-based discourse representations for producing indicative summaries and show that the full discourse coverage of a document is definitively a plus

    Leveraging Semantic Annotations for Event-focused Search & Summarization

    Today in this Big Data era, overwhelming amounts of textual information across different sources with a high degree of redundancy has made it hard for a consumer to retrospect on past events. A plausible solution is to link semantically similar information contained across the different sources to enforce a structure thereby providing multiple access paths to relevant information. Keeping this larger goal in view, this work uses Wikipedia and online news articles as two prominent yet disparate information sources to address the following three problems: • We address a linking problem to connect Wikipedia excerpts to news articles by casting it into an IR task. Our novel approach integrates time, geolocations, and entities with text to identify relevant documents that can be linked to a given excerpt. • We address an unsupervised extractive multi-document summarization task to generate a fixed-length event digest that facilitates efficient consumption of information contained within a large set of documents. Our novel approach proposes an ILP for global inference across text, time, geolocations, and entities associated with the event. • To estimate temporal focus of short event descriptions, we present a semi-supervised approach that leverages redundancy within a longitudinal news collection to estimate accurate probabilistic time models. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness and viability of our proposed approaches towards achieving the larger goal.Im heutigen Big Data Zeitalters existieren überwältigende Mengen an Textinformationen, die über mehrere Quellen verteilt sind und ein hohes Maß an Redundanz haben. Durch diese Gegebenheiten ist eine Retroperspektive auf vergangene Ereignisse für Konsumenten nur schwer möglich. Eine plausible Lösung ist die Verknüpfung semantisch ähnlicher, aber über mehrere Quellen verteilter Informationen, um dadurch eine Struktur zu erzwingen, die mehrere Zugriffspfade auf relevante Informationen, bietet. Vor diesem Hintergrund benutzt diese Dissertation Wikipedia und Onlinenachrichten als zwei prominente, aber dennoch grundverschiedene Informationsquellen, um die folgenden drei Probleme anzusprechen: • Wir adressieren ein Verknüpfungsproblem, um Wikipedia-Auszüge mit Nachrichtenartikeln zu verbinden und das Problem in eine Information-Retrieval-Aufgabe umzuwandeln. Unser neuartiger Ansatz integriert Zeit- und Geobezüge sowie Entitäten mit Text, um relevante Dokumente, die mit einem gegebenen Auszug verknüpft werden können, zu identifizieren. • Wir befassen uns mit einer unüberwachten Extraktionsmethode zur automatischen Zusammenfassung von Texten aus mehreren Dokumenten um Ereigniszusammenfassungen mit fester Länge zu generieren, was eine effiziente Aufnahme von Informationen aus großen Dokumentenmassen ermöglicht. Unser neuartiger Ansatz schlägt eine ganzzahlige lineare Optimierungslösung vor, die globale Inferenzen über Text, Zeit, Geolokationen und mit Ereignis-verbundenen Entitäten zieht. • Um den zeitlichen Fokus kurzer Ereignisbeschreibungen abzuschätzen, stellen wir einen semi-überwachten Ansatz vor, der die Redundanz innerhalb einer langzeitigen Dokumentensammlung ausnutzt, um genaue probabilistische Zeitmodelle abzuschätzen. Umfangreiche experimentelle Auswertungen zeigen die Wirksamkeit und Tragfähigkeit unserer vorgeschlagenen Ansätze zur Erreichung des größeren Ziels

    Semantic consistency in text generation

    Automatic input-grounded text generation tasks process input texts and generate human-understandable natural language text for the processed information. The development of neural sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) models, which are usually trained in an end-to-end fashion, pushed the frontier of the performance on text generation tasks expeditiously. However, they are claimed to be defective in semantic consistency w.r.t. their corresponding input texts. Also, not only the models are to blame. The corpora themselves always include examples whose output is semantically inconsistent to its input. Any model that is agnostic to such data divergence issues will be prone to semantic inconsistency. Meanwhile, the most widely-used overlap-based evaluation metrics comparing the generated texts to their corresponding references do not evaluate the input-output semantic consistency explicitly, which makes this problem hard to detect. In this thesis, we focus on studying semantic consistency in three automatic text generation scenarios: Data-to-text Generation, Single Document Abstractive Summarization, and Chit-chat Dialogue Generation, by seeking for the answers to the following research questions: (1) how to define input-output semantic consistency in different text generation tasks? (2) how to quantitatively evaluate the input-output semantic consistency? (3) how to achieve better semantic consistency in individual tasks? We systematically define the semantic inconsistency phenomena in these three tasks as omission, intrinsic hallucination, and extrinsic hallucination. For Data-to-text Generation, we jointly learn a sentence planner that tightly controls which part of input source gets generated in what sequence, with a neural seq2seq text generator, to decrease all three types of semantic inconsistency in model-generated texts. The evaluation results confirm that the texts generated by our model contain much less omissions while maintaining low level of extrinsic hallucinations without sacrificing fluency compared to seq2seq models. For Single Document Abstractive Summarization, we reduce the level of extrinsic hallucinations in training data by automatically introducing assisting articles to each document-summary instance to provide the supplemental world-knowledge that is present in the summary but missing from the doc ument. With the help of a novel metric, we show that seq2seq models trained with as sisting articles demonstrate less extrinsic hallucinations than the ones trained without them. For Chit-chat Dialogue Generation, by filtering out the omitted and hallucinated examples from training set using a newly introduced evaluation metric, and encoding it into the neural seq2seq response generation models as a control factor, we diminish the level of omissions and extrinsic hallucinations in the generated dialogue responses

    In the last three decades information modelling and knowledge bases have become essentially important subjects not only in academic communities related to information systems and computer science but also in the business area where information technology is applied. The series of European – Japanese Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases (EJC) originally started as a co-operation initiative between Japan and Finland in 1982. The practical operations were then organised by professor Ohsuga in Japan and professors Hannu Kangassalo and Hannu Jaakkola in Finland (Nordic countries). Geographical scope has expanded to cover Europe and also other countries. Workshop characteristic - discussion, enough time for presentations and limited number of participants (50) / papers (30) - is typical for the conference. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: 1. Conceptual modelling: Modelling and specification languages; Domain-specific conceptual modelling; Concepts, concept theories and ontologies; Conceptual modelling of large and heterogeneous systems; Conceptual modelling of spatial, temporal and biological data; Methods for developing, validating and communicating conceptual models. 2. We thank all colleagues for their support of this issue of the EJC conference, especially the program committee, the organising committee, and the programme coordination team. The long and the short papers presented in the conference are revised after the conference and published in the Series of “Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence” by IOS Press (Amsterdam). The books “Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases” are edited by the Editing Committee of the conference.
