Efficiency Analysis of Swarm Intelligence and Randomization Techniques
Swarm intelligence has becoming a powerful technique in solving design and
scheduling tasks. Metaheuristic algorithms are an integrated part of this
paradigm, and particle swarm optimization is often viewed as an important
landmark. The outstanding performance and efficiency of swarm-based algorithms
inspired many new developments, though mathematical understanding of
metaheuristics remains partly a mystery. In contrast to the classic
deterministic algorithms, metaheuristics such as PSO always use some form of
randomness, and such randomization now employs various techniques. This paper
intends to review and analyze some of the convergence and efficiency associated
with metaheuristics such as firefly algorithm, random walks, and L\'evy
flights. We will discuss how these techniques are used and their implications
for further research.Comment: 10 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Multi-echelon distribution systems in city logistics
In the last decades
,
the increasing quality of services requested by the cust
omer, yields to the necessity of
optimizing
the whole distribution process.
This goal may be achieved through a smart exploitation of
existing resources other than a clever planning of the whole distribution process. For doing that, it is
necessary to enha
nce goods consolidation.
One of the most efficient way to implement
it
is to adopt
Multi

Echelon distribution systems
which are very common in
City Logistic context,
in which they allow
to keep large trucks from the city center, with strong

involved: the
Two Echelon

, the Two

Optimizing the Wood Supply Chain: Concept and Methods
Traditional Wood Supply Chain Management has several shortcomings that limit the performance, like uncoordinated logistic operations. Thus we propose a Spatial Decision Support System that supports the operations planning within the Wood Supply Chain. The intended system comprises several aspects of GIScience and Operations Research. Among them there are Location Based Services and Web Services which both rely on standards. In order to solve the scheduling task within the Wood Supply Chain several theoretical models and solution methods originating from Operations Research are discussed. The architecture of the intended Spatial Decision Support System collects the concepts within one system
Variable-depth adaptive large meighbourhood search algorithm for Open Periodic Vehicle Routing Problem with time windows
The Open Periodic Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (OPVRPTW) is a practical transportation routing and scheduling problem arising from real-world scenarios. It shares some common features with some classic VRP variants. The problem has a tightly constrained large-scale solution space and requires well balanced diversification and intensification in search. In Variable Depth Neighbourhood Search, large neighbourhood depth prevents the search from trapping into local optima prematurely, while small depth provides thorough exploitation in local areas. Considering the multi-dimensional solution structure and tight constraints in OPVRPTW, a Variable-Depth Adaptive Large Neighbourhood Search (VD-ALNS) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Contributions of four tailored destroy operators and three repair operators at variable depths are investigated. Comparing to existing methods, VD-ALNS makes a good trade-off between exploration and exploitation, and produces promising results on both small and large size benchmark instances

IoT and Fog-Computing-Based Predictive Maintenance Model for Effective Asset Management in Industry 4.0 Using Machine Learning
The assets in Industry 4.0 are categorised into
physical, virtual and human. The innovation and popularisation
of ubiquitous computing enhance the usage of smart devices:
RFID tags, QR codes, LoRa tags, etc. for assets identification and
tracking. The generated data from Industrial Internet of Things
(IIoT) eases information visibility and process automation in
Industry 4.0. Virtual assets include the data produced from IIoT.
One of the applications of the industrial big data is to predict the
failure of manufacturing equipment. Predictive maintenance
enables the business owner to decide such as repairing or replacing
the component before an actual failure which affects the whole
production line. Therefore, Industry 4.0 requires an effective asset
management to optimise the tasks distributions and predictive
maintenance model. This paper presents the Genetic Algorithm
(GA) based resource management integrating with machine
learning for predictive maintenance in fog computing. The time,
cost and energy performance of GA along with MinMin, MaxMin,
FCFS, RoundRobin are simulated in the FogWorkflowsim. The
predictive maintenance model is built in two-class logistic
regression using real-time datasets. The results demonstrate that
the proposed technique outperforms MinMin, MaxMin, FCFS,
RoundRobin in execution time, cost and energy usage. The
execution time is 0.48%faster, 5.43% lower cost and energy usage
is 28.10% lower in comparison with second-best results. The
training and testing accuracy of the prediction model is 95.1% and
94.5%, respectively

From metaheuristics to learnheuristics: Applications to logistics, finance, and computing
A large number of decision-making processes in strategic sectors such as transport and production involve NP-hard problems, which are frequently characterized by high levels of uncertainty and dynamism. Metaheuristics have become the predominant method for solving challenging optimization problems in reasonable computing times. However, they frequently assume that inputs, objective functions and constraints are deterministic and known in advance. These strong assumptions lead to work on oversimplified problems, and the solutions may demonstrate poor performance when implemented. Simheuristics, in turn, integrate simulation into metaheuristics as a way to naturally solve stochastic problems, and, in a similar fashion, learnheuristics combine statistical learning and metaheuristics to tackle problems in dynamic environments, where inputs may depend on the structure of the solution. The main contributions of this thesis include (i) a design for learnheuristics; (ii) a classification of works that hybridize statistical and machine learning and metaheuristics; and (iii) several applications for the fields of transport, production, finance and computing
