Essays on enterprise social media: moderation, shop floor integration and information system induced organizational change
The digital transformation increases the pressure on innovation capabilities and challenges organizations to adapt their business models. In order to cope with the increased competitiveness, organizations face two significant internal challenges: Enabling internal digital collaboration and knowledge sharing as well as information system-induced change. This dissertation will investigate seven related research questions divided in two main parts. The first part focuses on how an organization can foster digital knowledge exchanges and collaboration in global organizations. Enterprise social media has attracted the attention of organizations as a technology for social collaboration and knowledge sharing. The dissertation will investigate how organizations can moderate the employee discourse in such platforms from a novel organizational perspective and provide insights on how to increase the encouragement for employees to contribute and assure content quality. The developed framework will provide detailed moderation approaches. In addition, the risk of privacy concerns associated with organizational interference in the new digital collaboration technologies are evaluated. The second part of the dissertation shifts the focus to the shop floor environment, an area that has faced substantial digital advancements. Those advancements change the organizational role of the shop floor to a more knowledge work-oriented environment. Firstly, a state of research regarding technology acceptance and professional diversity is presented to create an enterprise social media job-characteristic framework. Further, a unique and longitudinal shop floor case study is investigated to derive organizational challenges for enterprise social media and potentials for empowerment. To validate the future shop floor environment needs use cases for the shop floor are derived and a user profile is established. The case study is extended by expert interviews to focus on conceptualizing organizational information systems-induced change. In this regard, the role of work practices, organizational and employee mindset and information system change are integrated into a holistic organizational change model that targets employee empowerment. This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of enterprise social media from an organizational management and shop floor perspective. A model for enhancing software project management using software agent technology
The present study has originated from the realisation that numerous software development projects either do not live up to expectations or fail outright. The scope, environment and implementation of traditional software projects have changed due to various reasons such as globalisation, advances in computing technologies and, last but not least, the development and deployment of software projects in distributed, collaborative and virtual environments. As a result, traditional project management methods cannot and do not address the added complexities found in this ever-changing environment.
In this study the processes and procedures associated with software project management (SPM) were explored. SPM can be defined as the process of planning, organising, staffing, monitoring, controlling and leading a software project. The current study is principally aimed at making a contribution to enhancing and supporting SPM.
A thorough investigation into software agent computing resulted in the realisation that software agent technology can be regarded as a new paradigm that may be used to support the SPM processes. A software agent is an autonomous system that forms part of an environment, can sense the environment and act on it over a period of time, in pursuit of its own agenda. The software agent can also perceive, reason and act by selecting and executing an appropriate action. The unique requirements of SPM and the ways in which agent technology may address these were subsequently identified. It was concluded that agent technology is specifically suited to geographically distributed systems, large network systems and mobile devices. Agents provide a natural metaphor for support in a team environment where cooperation and the coordination of actions toward a common goal, as well as the monitoring and controlling of actions are strongly supported. Although it became evident that agent technology is indeed being applied to areas and sections of the SPM environment, it is not being applied to the whole spectrum, i.e. to all core and facilitating functions of SPM. If software agents were to be used across the whole spectrum of SPM processes, this could provide a significant advantage to software project managers who are currently using other contemporary methods.
The "SPMSA" model (Software Project Management supported by Software Agents) was therefore proposed. This model aims to enhance SPM by taking into account the unique nature and changing environment of software projects. The SPMSA model is unique as it supports the entire spectrum of SPM functionality, thus supporting and enhancing each key function with a team of software agents. Both the project manager and individual team members will be supported during software project management processes to simplify their tasks, eliminate the complexities, automate actions and enhance coordination and communication. Virtual teamwork, knowledge management, automated workflow management and process and task coordination will also be supported.
A prototype of a section of the risk management key function of the SPMSA model was implemented as `proof of concept'. This prototype may be expanded to include the entire SPMSA model and cover all areas of SPM. Finally, the SPMSA model was verified by comparing the SPM phases of the model to the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. These phases of the SPMSA model were furthermore compared to the basic phases of software development as prescribed by the ISO 10006:2003 standard for projects. In both cases the SPMSA model compared favourably.

Unpacking platform business scaling in the digital age
Todayâs increasingly pervasive digital technologies have radically transformed the competition landscape of the business world. To succeed in the digital age, digital businesses must establish and strengthen their ecosystem positions through rapid scaling. While extant literature in platform ecosystems identified the urgency of scaling for focal platforms, there is little recognition that non-focal actors (i.e., complementors) typically pursue their own growth ambitions. If successful, these ambitions may even shift the complementorâs position as a non-focal to a focal actor in the digital ecosystem. While such a scaling process opens new possibilities for the complementor, it also challenges its relations with focal platforms in the ecosystem on which it depends. This is what we refer to as the complementorâs dilemma: how can a non-focal actor pursue growth ambitions while maintaining favourable relationships with the focal platforms on which they grow?
To address this research problem, a sequential mixed-method project combining qualitative research approaches with computational techniques was conducted. Developing on an in-depth embedded case study of the Chinese short video platform Douyin from its inception as a complementor in 2016 to its rapid establishment as a focal actor in 2018, we further test and generalise the findings for the entire social networking ecosystem in China. This allows for new empirical and theoretical perspectives on the navigation process of digital business scaling through identity projection.
The findings suggest that non-focal businesses must continually locate and re-locate who they are in the moment and the trade-off of two, or multiple, future scenarios regarding their relationship with focal platforms, to cope with the complementorâs dilemma as they grow. Four identity projection strategies are further conceptualised as a powerful toolkit for balancing growth ambitions and dependency on other ecosystem actors during the scaling process.
These findings contribute to the platform literature by offering a process model for non-focal businessesâ identity projection as they grow in digital ecosystems. The model offers important implications for our understanding of complementarity as a dynamic process involving purposeful identity re-projection, as non-focal businesses attempt to navigate tensions with focal platforms in digital ecosystems during growth. It also contributes to our understanding of digital business scaling beyond a high-growth consequence of firm size â a turbulent, uncertain, messy process to economies of complementarity in digital ecosystems
An Innovation-driven IT Governance Framework for Benefits Realisation and its Application to Public Sector
Information and communication technology (ICT or IT) provides benefits to an organisation. However, a large number of IT projects fail. The research literature shows extant governance frameworks are not adequately protecting against project failures and are not as effective on many of these IT projects as they should be.
This thesis developed a new IT governance framework using an agile benefit management approach, aimed to achieve benefits realisation for any scale of IT projects, particularly for projects in the public sector such as Defence. The framework objectively targets digital transformation and technological agility, however, is shown in the thesis to assist in other enterprise challenges with IT acquisition and through-life management, such as cyber-resilience.
The framework is based on many theories, principles, and practices, such as: Transaction Cost Economics Theory, Prospect Theory (Decision-Making Under Uncertainty), Reference Class Forecasting, Stratification and the Incremental Enlargement Principle and Fuzzy Logic. The framework is shown to be effective primarily through better informed decision-making.
Benefits realisation is critical for information technology project success. The framework provides a systematic methodology on how to define economic benefit, technical benefit, and strategic benefit. It provides benefit realisation measures through fuzzy inference system, and it provides decision support based on the benefit performance measures and dis-benefit risk management.
When compared to industry-based frameworks for IT acquisition and sustainment this new framework is unique because it includes all internal and external stakeholders such as users, providers, industry, and academia to continuously collaborate for innovating, iterating, and evaluating technology for realisation of benefits to achieve the organisational goals and objectives.
The proof of concept has been conducted through a detailed case study in the Defence public sector, and several critiques of IT reform in other public sector applications where difficulties are occurring.
Organisations will be able to use this framework for a more rapid and assured uptake of emerging technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution into their technology stack. Regulating secure software development : analysing the potential regulatory solutions for the lack of security in software
The security of our informational infraÂstructure is still relatively poor. Huge investments have been made and even the regulators have taken information security seriously. Majority of current efforts both at the operational and the regulatory level, however, address only symptoms of an underlying problem: the insecurity of the software products - the salient components of most information and software systems.
Secure software development has gained momentum during the past couple of years and improvements have been made. By analysing the incentives for secure software development, it is argued in this study that without appropriate regulatory intervention the level of security will not improve to meet the needs of the network society as a whole. Beside information security in general, secure software development has to be raised as an important public policy if we wish to achieve a more secure network society and to maintain trust for information products and systems in commerce.
Efficacious regulatory measures are desperately needed to change the current practices. This study analyses two of the most attractive alternatives, software product liability and disclosure of vulnerability information, and makes suggestions for their improvement

Reconstruction of the international information technology standardisation process within a component-based design framework: A component based project setting perspective
This thesis critically examines the international information technology standardisation (IITS) process. The core substance of this process is projects that develop or revise one or a cluster of related published international standards. Projects span several years embracing construction of technical concepts; discussions; writing of draft standards and negotiations to establish international agreements on common solutions or requirements. An IIT standard, once published, is a binding technical specification on organisations and industries.
Complexity of the IITS process is the phenomenon of interest. The argument is that, without reconstruction, complexity impedes successful project development. An open layered component-based design (CBD) approach lays the foundations of the reconstruction of the IITS process. This approach ensures reduction in sources of complexity to then, create solution options that can leverage performance capabilities.
Prior theoretical and empirical research has excluded the IITS process. A theory- driven empirical research grounded in organization information processing theory (OIPT) therefore strengthens theoretical and methodological foundations to analytically challenge IITS process complexity. Five empirically examined projects yield a definition of the IITS process. Customised as a lens, OIPT provides an integrative study of the IITS process through four levels: environment, content, performance and reconstruction. OIPT criteria strengthen the theoretical explication of complexity, ambiguity, dynamism, variety and uncertainty. OIPT dimensions influence methodological assessment of solution options, reconstruction actions and design of an autonomous component-based project development setting.
This thesis presents four contributions to the information systems (IS) community. First, Standards Documentation Setting (SDS) is the test case demonstrating the development of draft standards within an integrated CBD framework. Second, a life cycle of the reconstructed IITS process illustrates performance expectations. Third, an integrative solution framework demonstrates the reconstructed IITS process. Fourth, the evaluated research methodology addresses issues of inconsistency and dichotomy raised in IS literatures
