This is the published version. © 2014 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)The intersymbol interference caused by dispersion, chirp, and a vestigial sideband filter in intensity modulation and a direct detection single carrier system is analyzed theoretically and numerically. An iterative nonlinear intersymbol interference cancellation technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in a 40- Gbps 16-QAM Mach-Zehnder modulator-based vestigial sideband intensity modulation and direct detection halfcycle Nyquist–subcarrier modulation system over a 100-km uncompensated standard single-mode fiber transmission for the first time. The experimental results show that 2.2-dB receiver sensitivity improvement is obtained at the forward error correction limit by using the iterative technique

Abstract-This paper examines the performance issues relating to the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and vestigial sideband (VSB) transmultiplexers synthesized in [l]. First, an analysis of the limitations of the configured systems regarding intersymbol interference and crosstalk suppression arising from the use of practical filters is made. Based on these observations, a new design technique for an FIR low-pass prototype that takes the practical degradations into account is formulated. The procedure involves the unconstrained optimization of an error function. A performance evaluation reveals that for four of the five systems, the new method is superior to a minimax approach in that lower intersymbol interference and crosstalk distortions are achieved with a smaller number of filter taps. For the other transmultiplexer, the advantage of the optimized design over the minimax design is in the added flexibility of taking crosstalk into account thereby diminishing the crosstalk distortion. The five transmultiplexers can be converted into new subband systems. We show how the optimized design approach formulated for the transmultiplexers carries over to the new subband systems. I

Waveforms for the Massive MIMO Downlink: Amplifier Efficiency, Distortion and Performance

In massive MIMO, most precoders result in downlink signals that suffer from high PAR, independently of modulation order and whether single-carrier or OFDM transmission is used. The high PAR lowers the power efficiency of the base station amplifiers. To increase power efficiency, low-PAR precoders have been proposed. In this article, we compare different transmission schemes for massive MIMO in terms of the power consumed by the amplifiers. It is found that (i) OFDM and single-carrier transmission have the same performance over a hardened massive MIMO channel and (ii) when the higher amplifier power efficiency of low-PAR precoding is taken into account, conventional and low-PAR precoders lead to approximately the same power consumption. Since downlink signals with low PAR allow for simpler and cheaper hardware, than signals with high PAR, therefore, the results suggest that low-PAR precoding with either single-carrier or OFDM transmission should be used in a massive MIMO base station

The thesis is focused on the problem of equalization in digital communication systems. Theoretical part includes brief observation of different approaches of equalizer designing. The practical part deals with implementation of the most often used equalizers and their adaptation algorithms. The aim of practical part is to make a comparison characteristic of different type of equalizers and reveal factors that influence the quality of equalization. Within a framework of the problem of equalization three types of equalizers were researched: linear equalizers, decision feedback equalizers (DFE) and maximum likelihood equalizers (ML). Each equalizer was tested on the model which approximates the real transmission system with complex distortion consisted of attenuation, intersymbol interference and additive noise. The comparison characteristics of equalizers were revealed on the basis of implementation. It was ascertained that ML equalizer has the optimum performance among three equalizers. The adaptation algorithm play significant role in performance of mentioned equalizers. Two groups of algorithms were studied: stochastic and deterministic. The first one includes following algorithms: least-mean-square algorithm (LMS), normalized LMS algorithm (NLMS) and variable step-size LMS algorithm (VSLMS). The second one is represented by RLS algorithm. It was determined that RLS algorithm converges much faster than LMS-based algorithms. The several factors that influenced the performance of all algorithms were studied. One of the most important factors that influences the speed of convergence and stability of the LMS algorithm is step-size parameter. Another very important factor is selecting the training sequence. The big disadvantage of LMS-based algorithms compare to RLS-based algorithms was found: the quality of equalization is highly dependent on the power spectral density of the training sequence.

Adaptive Bayesian decision feedback equalizer for dispersive mobile radio channels

    No full text
The paper investigates adaptive equalization of time dispersive mobile ratio fading channels and develops a robust high performance Bayesian decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The characteristics and implementation aspects of this Bayesian DFE are analyzed, and its performance is compared with those of the conventional symbol or fractional spaced DFE and the maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE). In terms of computational complexity, the adaptive Bayesian DFE is slightly more complex than the conventional DFE but is much simpler than the adaptive MLSE. In terms of error rate in symbol detection, the adaptive Bayesian DFE outperforms the conventional DFE dramatically. Moreover, for severely fading multipath channels, the adaptive MLSE exhibits significant degradation from the theoretical optimal performance and becomes inferior to the adaptive Bayesian DFE

The results are presented of a study of source coding, modulation/channel coding, and systems techniques for application to teleconferencing over high data rate digital communication satellite links. Simultaneous transmission of video, voice, data, and/or graphics is possible in various teleconferencing modes and one-way, two-way, and broadcast modes are considered. A satellite channel model including filters, limiter, a TWT, detectors, and an optimized equalizer is treated in detail. A complete analysis is presented for one set of system assumptions which exclude nonlinear gain and phase distortion in the TWT. Modulation, demodulation, and channel coding are considered, based on an additive white Gaussian noise channel model which is an idealization of an equalized channel. Source coding with emphasis on video data compression is reviewed, and the experimental facility utilized to test promising techniques is fully described

Single-Carrier Modulation versus OFDM for Millimeter-Wave Wireless MIMO

This paper presents results on the achievable spectral efficiency and on the energy efficiency for a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) link operating at millimeter wave frequencies (mmWave) in a typical 5G scenario. Two different single-carrier modem schemes are considered, i.e., a traditional modulation scheme with linear equalization at the receiver, and a single-carrier modulation with cyclic prefix, frequency-domain equalization and FFT-based processing at the receiver; these two schemes are compared with a conventional MIMO-OFDM transceiver structure. Our analysis jointly takes into account the peculiar characteristics of MIMO channels at mmWave frequencies, the use of hybrid (analog-digital) pre-coding and post-coding beamformers, the finite cardinality of the modulation structure, and the non-linear behavior of the transmitter power amplifiers. Our results show that the best performance is achieved by single-carrier modulation with time-domain equalization, which exhibits the smallest loss due to the non-linear distortion, and whose performance can be further improved by using advanced equalization schemes. Results also confirm that performance gets severely degraded when the link length exceeds 90-100 meters and the transmit power falls below 0 dBW.Comment: accepted for publication on IEEE Transactions on Communication

Cancellation of linear intersymbol interference for two-dimensional storage systems

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the cancellation of linear intersymbol interference (ISI) in two-dimensional (2-D) systems. It develops a theory for the error rate of receivers that use tentative decisions to cancel ISI. It also formulates precise conditions under which such ISI cancellation can be applied effectively. For many 2-D systems, these conditions are easily met, and therefore the application of ISI cancellation is of significant interest. The theory and the conditions are validated by simulation results for a 2-D channel model. Furthermore, results for an experimental 2-D optical storage system show that, for a single-layer disk with a capacity of 50 GB, a substantial performance improvement may be obtained by applying ISI cancellation
