    Towards a Formal Model of Privacy-Sensitive Dynamic Coalitions

    The concept of dynamic coalitions (also virtual organizations) describes the temporary interconnection of autonomous agents, who share information or resources in order to achieve a common goal. Through modern technologies these coalitions may form across company, organization and system borders. Therefor questions of access control and security are of vital significance for the architectures supporting these coalitions. In this paper, we present our first steps to reach a formal framework for modeling and verifying the design of privacy-sensitive dynamic coalition infrastructures and their processes. In order to do so we extend existing dynamic coalition modeling approaches with an access-control-concept, which manages access to information through policies. Furthermore we regard the processes underlying these coalitions and present first works in formalizing these processes. As a result of the present paper we illustrate the usefulness of the Abstract State Machine (ASM) method for this task. We demonstrate a formal treatment of privacy-sensitive dynamic coalitions by two example ASMs which model certain access control situations. A logical consideration of these ASMs can lead to a better understanding and a verification of the ASMs according to the aspired specification.Comment: In Proceedings FAVO 2011, arXiv:1204.579

    The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating,their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent “devices”, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications. Dynamic maintainability, selfhealing,self-repair of resources, changing resource state, (re-) configurationand context based IoT systems for service implementation and integrationwith IoT network service composition are of paramount importance whennew “cognitive devices” are becoming active participants in IoT applications.This chapter aims to be an overview of the IoRT concept, technologies,architectures and applications and to provide a comprehensive coverage offuture challenges, developments and applications

    Enabling discoverable trusted services for highly dynamic decentralized workflows

    Fifth generation (5G) mobile networks will revolutionize edge-based computing by providing fast and reliable network capabilities to remote sensors, devices and microservices. This heralds new opportunities for researchers, allowing remote instrumentation and analytic capabilities to be as accessible as local resources. The increased availability of remote data and services presents new opportunities for collaboration, yet introduces challenges for workflow orchestration, which will need to adapt to consider an increased choice of available services, including those from trusted partners and the wider community. In this paper we outline a workflow approach that provides decentralized discovery and orchestration of verifiably trustable services in support of multi-party operations. We base this work on the adoption of standardised data models and protocols emerging from hypermedia research, which has demonstrated success in using combinations of Linked Data, Web of Things (WoT) and semantic technologies to provide mechanisms for autonomous goal-directed agents to discover, execute and reuse new heterogeneous resources and behaviours in large-scale, dynamic environments. We adopt Verifiable Credentials (VCs) to securely share information amongst peers based on prior service usage in a cryptographically secure and tamperproof way, providing a trust-based framework for ratifying service qualities. Collating these new service description channels and integrating with existing decentralized workflow research based on vector symbolic architecture (VSA) provides an enhanced semantic search space for efficient and trusted service discovery that will be necessary for 5G edge-computing environments

    MIFaaS: A Mobile-IoT-Federation-as-a-Service Model for dynamic cooperation of IoT Cloud Providers

    In the Internet of Things (IoT) arena, a constant evolution is observed towards the deployment of integrated environments, wherein heterogeneous devices pool their capacities to match wide-ranging user requirements. Solutions for efficient and synergistic cooperation among objects are, therefore, required. This paper suggests a novel paradigm to support dynamic cooperation among private/public local clouds of IoT devices. Differently from . device-oriented approaches typical of Mobile Cloud Computing, the proposed paradigm envisages an . IoT Cloud Provider (ICP)-oriented cooperation, which allows all devices belonging to the same private/public owner to participate in the federation process. Expected result from dynamic federations among ICPs is a remarkable increase in the amount of service requests being satisfied. Different from the Fog Computing vision, the network edge provides only management support and supervision to the proposed Mobile-IoT-Federation-as-a-Service (MIFaaS), thus reducing the deployment cost of peripheral micro data centers. The paper proposes a coalition formation game to account for the interest of rational cooperative ICPs in their own payoff. A proof-of-concept performance evaluation confirms that obtained coalition structures not only guarantee the satisfaction of the players' requirements according to their utility function, but also these introduce significant benefits for the cooperating ICPs in terms of number of tasks being successfully assigned

    Integration of decision support systems to improve decision support performance

    Decision support system (DSS) is a well-established research and development area. Traditional isolated, stand-alone DSS has been recently facing new challenges. In order to improve the performance of DSS to meet the challenges, research has been actively carried out to develop integrated decision support systems (IDSS). This paper reviews the current research efforts with regard to the development of IDSS. The focus of the paper is on the integration aspect for IDSS through multiple perspectives, and the technologies that support this integration. More than 100 papers and software systems are discussed. Current research efforts and the development status of IDSS are explained, compared and classified. In addition, future trends and challenges in integration are outlined. The paper concludes that by addressing integration, better support will be provided to decision makers, with the expectation of both better decisions and improved decision making processes

    Innovative approaches to urban data management using emerging technologies

    Many characteristics of Smart cities rely on a sufficient quantity and quality of urban data. Local industry and developers can use this data for application development that improves life of all citizens. Therefore, the handling and usability of this data is a big challenge for smart cities. In this paper we investigate new approaches to urban data management using emerging technologies and give an insight on further research conducted within the EC-funded smarticipate project. Geospatial data cannot be handled well in classical relational database environments. Either they are just put in as binary large objects or have to be broken down into elementary types which can be handled by the database, in many cases resulting in a slow system, since the database technology is not really tuned for delivery on mass data as classical relational databases are optimized for online transaction processing and not analytic processing. Document-based databases provide a better performance, but still struggle with the challenge of large binary objects. Also the heterogeneity of data requires a lot of mapping and data cleansing, in some cases replication can’t be avoided. Another approach is to use Semantic Web technologies to enhance the data and build up relations and connections between entities. However, data formats such as RDF use a different approach and are not suitable for geospatial data leading to a lack on usability. Search engines are a good example of web applications with a high usability. The users must be able to find the right data and get information of related or close matches. This allows information retrieval in an easy to use fashion. The same principles should be applied to geospatial data, which would improve the usability of open data. Combined with data mining and big data technologies those principles would improve the usability of open geospatial data and even lead to new ways to use it. By helping with the interpretation of data in a certain context data is transformed into useful information. In this paper we analyse key features of open geodata portals such as linked data and machine learning in order to show ways of improving the user experience. Based on the Smarticipate projects we show afterwards as open data and geo data online and see the practical application. We also give an outlook on piloting cases where we want to evaluate, how the technologies presented in this paper can be combined to a usefull open data portal. In contrast to the previous EC-funded project urbanapi, where participative processes in smart cities where created with urban data, we go one step further with semantic web and open data. Thereby we achieve a more general approach on open data portals for spatial data and how to improve their usability. The envisioned architecture of the smarticipate project relies on file based storage and a no-copy strategy, which means that data is mostly kept in its original format, a conversion to another format is only done if necessary (e.g. the current format has limitations on domain specific attributes or the user requests a specific format). A strictly functional approach and architecture is envisioned which allows a massively parallel execution and therefore is predestined to be deployed in a cloud environment. The actual search interface uses a domain specific vocabulary which can be customised for special purposes or for users that consider their context and expertise, which should abstract from technology specific peculiarities. Also application programmers will benefit form this architecture as linked data principles will be followed extensively. For example, the JSON and JSON-LD standards will be used, so that web developers can use results of the data store directly without the need for conversion. Also links to further information will be provided within the data, so that a drill down is possible for more details. The remainder of this paper is structured as follows. After the introduction about open data and data in general we look at related work and existing open data portals. This leads to the main chapter about the key technology aspects for an easy-to-use open data portal. This is followed by Chapter five, an introduction of the EC-funded project smarticipate, in which the key technology aspects of chapter four will be included

    The Penetration of Internet of Things in Robotics: Towards a Web of Robotic Things

    As the Internet of Things (IoT) penetrates different domains and application areas, it has recently entered also the world of robotics. Robotics constitutes a modern and fast-evolving technology, increasingly being used in industrial, commercial and domestic settings. IoT, together with the Web of Things (WoT) could provide many benefits to robotic systems. Some of the benefits of IoT in robotics have been discussed in related work. This paper moves one step further, studying the actual current use of IoT in robotics, through various real-world examples encountered through a bibliographic research. The paper also examines the potential ofWoT, together with robotic systems, investigating which concepts, characteristics, architectures, hardware, software and communication methods of IoT are used in existing robotic systems, which sensors and actions are incorporated in IoT-based robots, as well as in which application areas. Finally, the current application of WoT in robotics is examined and discussed
