    New turbulence modeling for simulation of Direct Contact Condensation in two-phase pressurized thermal shock

    Injection of Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) water into the primary loops of the Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) leads to rapid cooling of Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) inside wall after Loss Of Coolant Accident (LOCA). This condition, known as Pressurized Thermal Shock (PTS) intensifies the propagation of the RPV structural defects and would be considered as an ageing mechanism. For structural and fracture analysis of RPV wall, thermal-hydraulic analysis of PTS should be accomplished to obtain the steam/water flow characteristics in the downcomer. For this purpose, simulation of steam/water stratified flow (due to density difference) after the injection point should be done by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. In this region, steam condensation over water layer is considered as the only heat source and controlled by turbulence eddy motion near the steam/water interface. Based on Surface Renewal Theory (SRT), Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) would be calculated by evaluation of turbulence length and velocity. Therefore, prediction of turbulence characteristics plays a significant role for estimation of interfacial mass transfer and temperature profile. High gradient of velocity and Turbulence Kinetic Energy (TKE), and interfacial mass and momentum transfer at the steam/water interface needs some modifications for application of traditional turbulence models. Implementation of damping function is one of the common solutions to overcome the overestimation of TKE at the steam/water interface. Although, this function improves flow characteristics of smooth stratified flow, investigation of conservation equations and experimental data implies that the other source function is needed when the flow regime changes to wavy flow. In this paper, a new source function of TKE based on variations of turbulence characteristics is proposed for steam/water interface leading to a special boundary condition of turbulence. To investigate the effects of this modification, simulation of air/water and steam/water stratified flow in three different test facilities is performed. The results show that the implementation of the source function of TKE improves the prediction of turbulence characteristics at the interface of isothermal stratified flow. Also condensation rate and temperature gradient of steam/water stratified flow have a better agreement with experimental data

However, this paradigm could not be suitable for those patients with lack of gaze control. To solve that, the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) para-digm, which presents the stimuli located in the same position, has been proposed in previous studies. Thus, the aim of the present work is to assess if a stimuli set of pictures that improves the performance in RCP, could also improve the per-formance in a RSVP paradigm. Six participants have controlled four conditions in a calibration task: letters in RCP, pictures in RCP, letters in RSVP and pictures in RSVP. The results showed that pictures in RCP obtained the best accuracy and information transfer rate. The improvement effect given by pictures was greater in the RCP paradigm than in RSVP.     Real time integration of user preferences into virtual prototypes

    Within new product development (NPD), both virtual prototypes and physical prototypes play important roles in creating, testing and modifying designs. However, in the current design process, these two forms of prototyping methods are normally used independently and converted from one to the other during different design phases. This conversion process is time consuming and expensive and also introduces potential information loss/corruption problems. If the design process requires many iterations, it may simply be impractical to generate all the conversions that are theoretically required. Therefore, the integration of virtual and physical prototyping may offer a possible solution where the design definition is maintained simultaneously in both the virtual and physical environment. The overall aim of this research was to develop an interface or a tool that achieves real time integration of physical and virtual prototyping. “Real time integration” here means changes to the virtual prototypes will reflect any changes that have been made contemporaneously to the physical prototypes, and vice versa. Thus, conversion of the prototype from physical to virtual (or vice versa) will be achieved immediately, hence saving time and cost. A review of the literature was undertaken to determine what previous research has been conducted in this area. The result of the review shows the research in this area is still in its infancy. The research hypothesis was developed through the use of a questionnaire survey. Totally 102 questionnaires were sent to designers, design directors or design managers to address the issue: will industrial designers want to make use of real time integration and if so, how? The outcome from the literature review drove further development of the research hypothesis and an initial pilot experiment to test this. The pilot trial was designed to address the research questions: • Can real time physical and virtual prototyping integration be conveniently demonstrated? • Will designers and users be comfortable using the integration method? • Will users recognise the benefits of the integration? The results showed that real time integration between physical and virtual prototyping is necessary in helping designers develop new products and for getting users more closely involved. The future research suggested is that more investigations and experiments are needed to explore a proper method that simultaneously employing these two types of prototyping in product development process.     A design-for-casting integrated approach based on rapid simulation and modulus criterion

    This paper presents a new approach to the design of cast components and their associated tools. The current methodology is analysed through a case study and its main disadvantages underlined. Then, in order to overcome these identified drawbacks, a new approach is proposed. Knowing that this approach is mainly based on a rapid simulation of the process, basics of a simplified physical model of solidification are presented as well as an associated modulus criterion.     brat: a Web-based Tool for NLP-Assisted Text Annotation

    We introduce the brat rapid annotation tool (BRAT), an intuitive web-based tool for text annotation supported by Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. BRAT has been developed for rich structured annotation for a variety of NLP tasks and aims to support manual curation efforts and increase annotator productivity using NLP techniques. We discuss several case studies of real-world annotation projects using pre-release versions of BRAT and present an evaluation of annotation assisted by semantic class disambiguation on a multicategory entity mention annotation task, showing a 15 % decrease in total annotation time.     Exploring a P300 Brain-Computer Interface Based on Three Different RSVP Paradigms

    A BCI Speller is a typical Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system for communication purpose. This technology can provide users with severe motor disability with an assistive device controlled by brain activity. In the present preliminary study we investigated, in five subjects, the performance and the Information Transfer Rate (ITR) based on three different Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) paradigms to control a BCI speller. The variants of the three paradigms were the stimuli presented: letters, images and famous faces. These preliminary results showed that performance can increase when using an RSVP paradigm based on images, and ITR can improves when using the images and the famous faces paradigms.Universidad de MĂĄlaga.     Deep Space Network information system architecture study

    The purpose of this article is to describe an architecture for the Deep Space Network (DSN) information system in the years 2000-2010 and to provide guidelines for its evolution during the 1990s. The study scope is defined to be from the front-end areas at the antennas to the end users (spacecraft teams, principal investigators, archival storage systems, and non-NASA partners). The architectural vision provides guidance for major DSN implementation efforts during the next decade. A strong motivation for the study is an expected dramatic improvement in information-systems technologies, such as the following: computer processing, automation technology (including knowledge-based systems), networking and data transport, software and hardware engineering, and human-interface technology. The proposed Ground Information System has the following major features: unified architecture from the front-end area to the end user; open-systems standards to achieve interoperability; DSN production of level 0 data; delivery of level 0 data from the Deep Space Communications Complex, if desired; dedicated telemetry processors for each receiver; security against unauthorized access and errors; and highly automated monitor and control

    Next generation software environments : principles, problems, and research directions

    The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and development in software environments. Conferences have been devoted to the topic of practical environments, journal papers produced, and commercial systems sold. Given all the activity, one might expect a great deal of consensus on issues, approaches, and techniques. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the term "environment" is still used in a variety of conflicting ways. Nevertheless substantial progress has been made and we are at least nearing consensus on many critical issues.The purpose of this paper is to characterize environments, describe several important principles that have emerged in the last decade or so, note current open problems, and describe some approaches to these problems, with particular emphasis on the activities of one large-scale research program, the Arcadia project. Consideration is also given to two related topics: empirical evaluation and technology transition. That is, how can environments and their constituents be evaluated, and how can new developments be moved effectively into the production sector

    In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications.
