    Evaluating Interaction Techniques in an Interactive Workspace: Comparing the Effectiveness of a Textual Interface, Virtual Paths Interface, and ARIS

    ARIS is an interface that enables users to visually relocate applications and redirect input among myriad devices in an interactive workspace. While we previously claimed that ARIS is more effective than other interfaces for performing these tasks, this work seeks to empirically validate our claim. We compared the use of ARIS to an interaction design of a text-based and virtual paths interface for relocating applications and redirecting input in an interactive workspace. Results show that (i) users can relocate applications and redirect input faster with ARIS than a text-based interface, (ii) users commit fewer errors with ARIS than a text-based interface, (iii) users experience less workload and are more satisfied with ARIS than a text-based interface, and (iv) ARIS was comparable to the use of a virtual paths interface. ARIS is more effective than an interaction design that requires a user to mentally map and select textual identifiers, while supporting functionality beyond that of a virtual paths interface

    The simplicity project: easing the burden of using complex and heterogeneous ICT devices and services

    As of today, to exploit the variety of different "services", users need to configure each of their devices by using different procedures and need to explicitly select among heterogeneous access technologies and protocols. In addition to that, users are authenticated and charged by different means. The lack of implicit human computer interaction, context-awareness and standardisation places an enormous burden of complexity on the shoulders of the final users. The IST-Simplicity project aims at leveraging such problems by: i) automatically creating and customizing a user communication space; ii) adapting services to user terminal characteristics and to users preferences; iii) orchestrating network capabilities. The aim of this paper is to present the technical framework of the IST-Simplicity project.     End-user composition of interactive applications through actionable UI components

    Developing interactive systems to access and manipulate data is a very tough task. In particular, the development of user interfaces (UIs) is one of the most time-consuming activities in the software lifecycle. This is even more demanding when data have to be retrieved by accessing flexibly different online resources. Indeed, software development is moving more and more toward composite applications that aggregate on the fly specific Web services and APIs. In this article, we present a mashup model that describes the integration, at the presentation layer, of UI components. The goal is to allow non-technical end users to visualize and manipulate (i.e., to perform actions on) the data displayed by the components, which thus become actionable UI components. This article shows how the model has guided the development of a mashup platform through which non-technical end users can create component-based interactive workspaces via the aggregation and manipulation of data fetched from distributed online resources. Due to the abundance of online data sources, facilitating the creation of such interactive workspaces is a very relevant need that emerges in different contexts. A utilization study has been performed in order to assess the benefits of the proposed model and of the Actionable UI Components; participants were required to perform real tasks using the mashup platform.     Distributed Implementation of a Self-Organizing Decentralized Multimedia Appliance Middleware

    A middleware for real ad-hoc cooperation of distributed device ensembles must support self-organization of its components. Self-organization means that the independence of the ensembles\u27 components is ensured, that the ensemble is dynamically extensible by new components and that real distributed implementation is possible. Furthermore the data-flow of messages within the ensemble may not be statically determined. This article presents the application of the SodaPop model for distributed device ensembles to physical heterogeneous devices as well as the distributed implementation of conflict resolution strategies that guarantee the data-flow even if there are competing components.     Multi-person Spatial Interaction in a Large Immersive Display Using Smartphones as Touchpads

    In this paper, we present a multi-user interaction interface for a large immersive space that supports simultaneous screen interactions by combining (1) user input via personal smartphones and Bluetooth microphones, (2) spatial tracking via an overhead array of Kinect sensors, and (3) WebSocket interfaces to a webpage running on the large screen. Users are automatically, dynamically assigned personal and shared screen sub-spaces based on their tracked location with respect to the screen, and use a webpage on their personal smartphone for touchpad-type input. We report user experiments using our interaction framework that involve image selection and placement tasks, with the ultimate goal of realizing display-wall environments as viable, interactive workspaces with natural multimodal interfaces.Comment: 8 pages with reference

    A Web portal for situated Interaction

    The combination between ubiquitous computing environments and ambient displays enables a broad range of new scenarios for situated interaction. In this paper, we describe our web based approach for situated displays. The concept of situated portal is introduced as a web portal that is targeted for presentation at a specific situation and that is based on interaction metaphors that are radically different from hypertext and oint-and-click interactions. We have created a prototype in which a situated portal is used for managing content presentation and user interaction at two different displays. This prototype has provided an important proof-of-concept and has allowed us to gain considerable feedback on its usage and scientific challenges, based on which we will now deploy a new large-scale prototype where some of the key issues will be addressed by a multi-disciplinary team
