Interaction Design: Foundations, Experiments
Interaction Design: Foundations, Experiments is the result of a series of projects, experiments and curricula aimed at investigating the foundations of interaction design in particular and design research in general.
The first part of the book - Foundations - deals with foundational theoretical issues in interaction design. An analysis of two categorical mistakes -the empirical and interactive fallacies- forms a background to a discussion of interaction design as act design and of computational technology as material in design.
The second part of the book - Experiments - describes a range of design methods, programs and examples that have been used to probe foundational issues through systematic questioning of what is given. Based on experimental design work such as Slow Technology, Abstract Information Displays, Design for Sound Hiders, Zero Expression Fashion, and IT+Textiles, this section also explores how design experiments can play a central role when developing new design theory
Interaction design and emotional wellbeing
The World Health Organisation has concluded that
emotional wellbeing is fundamental to our quality of
life. It enables us to experience life as meaningful and
is an essential component of social cohesion, peace and
stability in the living environment [21]. This workshop
will bring together a diverse community to consolidate
existing knowledge and identify new opportunities for
research on technologies designed to support emotional
wellbeing. The workshop will examine uses of
technology in mental health settings, but will also
consider the importance of emotional needs in physical
healthcare and wellbeing more generally. The design of
technology to provide social support and to extend
traditional care networks will be key workshop themes
A protocol study of novice interaction design behaviour in Botswana: solution-driven interaction design
Think aloud studies and protocol analysis are well-known in the field of HCI, but most often these studies focus on usability evaluations, or on the use of technology. Rarely are they used to investigate the behaviour of interaction designers. In this paper, we report on a protocol study with novice interaction designers in Botswana. Participants had just completed the design section of an undergraduate module on Interaction Design that actively promotes a problem-driven approach to the design of interactive products, yet the participants behaved in a way that is closer to a solution-driven approach. The module emphasizes user-centred design, prototyping methods to support design development, and evaluating design detail. Yet participants suggest solutions before exploring the context of use, use prototyping methods to capture, rather than to develop, designs, and do not produce detailed designs. In a problem-solving context, some of these behaviours are typical of novices, but in a design context they are also seen in experienced designers. The results presented here reveal the detail of the approach adopted by these students, and contribute to the wider debate concerning the internationalization of HCI education
Finding the future:evolving interaction design
The main aim of this project is to design and prototype a simplified example of a mobile operating system that makes use of both edge swipe control and 'smart' graphical instructions. The research will consider how these methods can be used to design a truly inclusive and accessible interface. The effectiveness of these features will be validated through user experiments and focus groups over the course of the project, with the findings of user testing used to inform design practice
Control/structure interaction design methodology
The Control Structure Interaction Program is a technology development program for spacecraft that exhibit interactions between the control system and structural dynamics. The program objectives include development and verification of new design concepts (such as active structure) and new tools (such as a combined structure and control optimization algorithm) and their verification in ground and possibly flight test. The new CSI design methodology is centered around interdisciplinary engineers using new tools that closely integrate structures and controls. Verification is an important CSI theme and analysts will be closely integrated to the CSI Test Bed laboratory. Components, concepts, tools and algorithms will be developed and tested in the lab and in future Shuttle-based flight experiments. The design methodology is summarized in block diagrams depicting the evolution of a spacecraft design and descriptions of analytical capabilities used in the process. The multiyear JPL CSI implementation plan is described along with the essentials of several new tools. A distributed network of computation servers and workstations was designed that will provide a state-of-the-art development base for the CSI technologies
Interaction design issues for car navigation systems
We describe a study on the interaction design of in-car
navigation systems. It focused on a commercial
product. Critical incident analysis was performed
based on natural use of the system by a usability
analyst. A cognitive walkthrough was then performed
based on actual scenarios from the natural use. This
is a non-classic application of cognitive walkthrough.
It allowed anecdotal critical incidents to be
theoretically grounded. We draw conclusions about
the interaction design of car navigation systems

Such a design brief requires the exploration of alternative application domains for an already developed technology. The paper presents a case study where such a novel type of design brief has been offered to the students taking part in a collaborative design project and discusses how it supported divergent thinking and creativity as well as helped enhancing the learning objectives
The Confluence of Interaction Design & Design: from Disciplinary to Transdisciplinary Perspectives
In keeping with the conference theme of rigour and the authorsâ interest in sustainability and interaction design, we describe the confluence of design-oriented notions of interaction design and HCI-oriented notions of interaction design in terms of understanding the present and making choices about possible futures. We comment on the variety of research modes in this confluence and then take up the issue of how disciplinarity, multidisciplinarity, and interdisciplinarity operate and fail to operate as boundary crossing mechanisms for these research modes. As a complement and extension to disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary practices, we take up the notion of transdisciplinarity and describe how it informs the possibility of values-rich free boundary crossing between research modes in the service of real world issues, while still preserving rigour.
