    Wide-Area Surveillance System using a UAV Helicopter Interceptor and Sensor Placement Planning Techniques

    This project proposes and describes the implementation of a wide-area surveillance system comprised of a sensor/interceptor placement planning and an interceptor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) helicopter. Given the 2-D layout of an area, the planning system optimally places perimeter cameras based on maximum coverage and minimal cost. Part of this planning system includes the MATLAB implementation of Erdem and Sclaroff’s Radial Sweep algorithm for visibility polygon generation. Additionally, 2-D camera modeling is proposed for both fixed and PTZ cases. Finally, the interceptor is also placed to minimize shortest-path flight time to any point on the perimeter during a detection event. Secondly, a basic flight control system for the UAV helicopter is designed and implemented. The flight control system’s primary goal is to hover the helicopter in place when a human operator holds an automatic-flight switch. This system represents the first step in a complete waypoint-navigation flight control system. The flight control system is based on an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. This system is implemented using a general-purpose personal computer (GPPC) running Windows XP and other commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. This setup differs from other helicopter control systems which typically use custom embedded solutions or micro-controllers. Experiments demonstrate the sensor placement planning achieving \u3e90% coverage at optimized-cost for several typical areas given multiple camera types and parameters. Furthermore, the helicopter flight control system experiments achieve hovering success over short flight periods. However, the final conclusion is that the COTS IMU is insufficient for high-speed, high-frequency applications such as a helicopter control system

    The potential use of smart cards in vehicle management with particular reference to the situation in Western Australia

    Vehicle management may be considered to consist of traffic management, usage control, maintenance, and security. Various regulatory authorities undertake the first aspect, fleet managers will be concerned with all aspects, and owner-drivers will be interested mainly in maintenance and security. Car theft poses a universal security problem. Personalisation, including navigational assistance, might be achieved as a by-product of an improved management system. Authorities and fleet managers may find smartcards to be key components of an improved system, but owners may feel that the need for improved security does not justify its cost. This thesis seeks to determine whether smartcards may be used to personalise vehicles in order to improve vehicle management within a forseeable time and suggest when it might happen. In the process four broad questions are addressed. • First, what improvements in technology are needed to make any improved scheme using smartcards practicable, and what can be expected in the near future? • Second, what problems and difficulties may impede the development of improved management? • Third, what non-vehicle applications might create an environment in which a viable scheme could emerge? • Finally, is there a perceived need for improved vehicle management? The method involved a literature search, the issue of questionnaires to owner drivers and fleet managers, discussions with fleet managers, the preparation of data-flow and state diagrams, and the construction of a simulation of a possible security approach. The study concludes that although vehicle personalisation is possible- and desirable it is unlikely to occur within the next decade because the environment needed to make it practicable will not emerge until a number of commercial and standardisation problems that obstruct all smartcard applications have been solved

    Shape formation by self-disassembly in programmable matter systems

While many programmable matter systems have been proposed in fiction, (Barbapapa, Changelings from Star Trek, the Terminator, and Transformers), and academia, a lack of suitable hardware and accompanying algorithms prevents their full realization. With this thesis research, we aim to create a system of miniature modules that can form arbitrary structures on demand. We develop autonomous 12mm cubic modules capable of bonding to, and communicating with, four of their immediate neighbors. These modules are among the smallest autonomous modular robots capable of sensing, communication, computation, and actuation. The modules employ unique electropermanent magnet connectors. The four connectors in each module enable the modules to communicate and share power with their nearest neighbors. These solid-state connectors are strong enough for a single inter-module connection to support the weight of 80 other modules. The connectors only consume power when switching on or off; they have no static power consumption. We implement a number of low-level communication and control algorithms which manage information transfer between neighboring modules. These algorithms ensure that messages are delivered reliably despite challenging conditions. They monitor the state of all communication links and are able to reroute messages around broken communication links to ensure that they reach their intended destinations. In order to accomplish our long-standing goal of programmatic shape formation, we also develop a suite of provably-correct distributed algorithms that allow complex shape formation. The distributed duplication algorithm that we present allows the system to duplicate any passive object that is submerged in a collection of programmable matter modules. The algorithm runs on the processors inside the modules and requires no external intervention. It requires 0(1) storage and O(n) inter-module messages per module, where n is the number of modules in the system. The algorithm can both magnify and produce multiple copies of the submerged object. A programmable matter system is a large network of autonomous processors, so these algorithms have applicability in a variety of routing, sensor network, and distributed computing applications. While our hardware system provides a 50-module test-bed for the algorithms, we show, by using a unique simulator, that the algorithms are capable of operating in much larger environments.
