On the simulation of interactive non-verbal behaviour in virtual humans
Development of virtual humans has focused mainly in two broad areas - conversational agents and computer game characters. Computer game characters have traditionally been action-oriented - focused on the game-play - and conversational agents have been focused on sensible/intelligent conversation. While virtual humans have incorporated some form of non-verbal behaviour, this has been quite limited and more importantly not connected or connected very loosely with the behaviour of a real human interacting with the virtual human - due to a lack of sensor data and no system to respond to that data. The interactional aspect of non-verbal behaviour is highly important in human-human interactions and previous research has demonstrated that people treat media (and therefore virtual humans) as real people, and so interactive non-verbal behaviour is also important in the development of virtual humans. This paper presents the challenges in creating virtual humans that are non-verbally interactive and drawing corollaries with the development history of control systems in robotics presents some approaches to solving these challenges - specifically using behaviour based systems - and shows how an order of magnitude increase in response time of virtual humans in conversation can be obtained and that the development of rapidly responding non-verbal behaviours can start with just a few behaviours with more behaviours added without difficulty later in development
Conceptual spatial representations for indoor mobile robots
We present an approach for creating conceptual representations of human-made indoor environments using mobile
robots. The concepts refer to spatial and functional properties of typical indoor environments. Following ļ¬ndings
in cognitive psychology, our model is composed of layers representing maps at diļ¬erent levels of abstraction. The
complete system is integrated in a mobile robot endowed with laser and vision sensors for place and object recognition.
The system also incorporates a linguistic framework that actively supports the map acquisition process, and which
is used for situated dialogue. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the integrated system
A Review on Human-Computer Interaction and Intelligent Robots
In the field of artificial intelligence, humanācomputer interaction (HCI) technology and its related intelligent robot technologies are essential and interesting contents of research. From the perspective of software algorithm and hardware system, these above-mentioned technologies study and try to build a natural HCI environment. The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of HCI and intelligent robots. This research highlights the existing technologies of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and other senses, which are widely used in human interaction. Based on these same technologies, this research introduces some intelligent robot systems and platforms. This paper also forecasts some vital challenges of researching HCI and intelligent robots. The authors hope that this work will help researchers in the field to acquire the necessary information and technologies to further conduct more advanced research
A Comprehensive Review of Data-Driven Co-Speech Gesture Generation
Gestures that accompany speech are an essential part of natural and efficient
embodied human communication. The automatic generation of such co-speech
gestures is a long-standing problem in computer animation and is considered an
enabling technology in film, games, virtual social spaces, and for interaction
with social robots. The problem is made challenging by the idiosyncratic and
non-periodic nature of human co-speech gesture motion, and by the great
diversity of communicative functions that gestures encompass. Gesture
generation has seen surging interest recently, owing to the emergence of more
and larger datasets of human gesture motion, combined with strides in
deep-learning-based generative models, that benefit from the growing
availability of data. This review article summarizes co-speech gesture
generation research, with a particular focus on deep generative models. First,
we articulate the theory describing human gesticulation and how it complements
speech. Next, we briefly discuss rule-based and classical statistical gesture
synthesis, before delving into deep learning approaches. We employ the choice
of input modalities as an organizing principle, examining systems that generate
gestures from audio, text, and non-linguistic input. We also chronicle the
evolution of the related training data sets in terms of size, diversity, motion
quality, and collection method. Finally, we identify key research challenges in
gesture generation, including data availability and quality; producing
human-like motion; grounding the gesture in the co-occurring speech in
interaction with other speakers, and in the environment; performing gesture
evaluation; and integration of gesture synthesis into applications. We
highlight recent approaches to tackling the various key challenges, as well as
the limitations of these approaches, and point toward areas of future

A system for recognizing human emotions based on speech analysis and facial feature extraction: applications to Human-Robot Interaction
With the advance in Artificial Intelligence, humanoid robots start to interact with ordinary people based on the growing understanding of psychological processes. Accumulating evidences in Human Robot Interaction (HRI) suggest that researches are focusing on making an emotional communication between human and robot for creating a social perception, cognition, desired interaction and sensation.
Furthermore, robots need to receive human emotion and optimize their behavior to help and interact with a human being in various environments. The most natural way to recognize basic emotions is extracting sets of features from human speech, facial expression and body gesture. A system for recognition of emotions based on speech analysis and facial features extraction can have interesting applications in Human-Robot Interaction. Thus, the Human-Robot Interaction ontology explains how the knowledge of these fundamental sciences is applied in physics (sound analyses), mathematics (face detection and perception), philosophy theory (behavior) and robotic science context.
In this project, we carry out a study to recognize basic emotions (sadness, surprise, happiness, anger, fear and disgust). Also, we propose a methodology and a software program for classification of emotions based on speech analysis and facial features extraction.
The speech analysis phase attempted to investigate the appropriateness of using acoustic (pitch value, pitch peak, pitch range, intensity and formant), phonetic (speech rate) properties of emotive speech with the freeware program PRAAT, and consists of generating and analyzing a graph of speech signals. The proposed architecture investigated the appropriateness of analyzing emotive speech with the minimal use of signal processing algorithms. 30 participants to the experiment had to repeat five sentences in English (with durations typically between 0.40 s and 2.5 s) in order to extract data relative to pitch (value, range and peak) and rising-falling intonation. Pitch alignments (peak, value and range) have been evaluated and the results have been compared with intensity and speech rate.
The facial feature extraction phase uses the mathematical formulation (B\ue9zier curves) and the geometric analysis of the facial image, based on measurements of a set of Action Units (AUs) for classifying the emotion. The proposed technique consists of three steps: (i) detecting the facial region within the image, (ii) extracting and classifying the facial features, (iii) recognizing the emotion. Then, the new data have been merged with reference data in order to recognize the basic emotion.
Finally, we combined the two proposed algorithms (speech analysis and facial expression), in order to design a hybrid technique for emotion recognition. Such technique have been implemented in a software program, which can be employed in Human-Robot Interaction.
The efficiency of the methodology was evaluated by experimental tests on 30 individuals (15 female and 15 male, 20 to 48 years old) form different ethnic groups, namely: (i) Ten adult European, (ii) Ten Asian (Middle East) adult and (iii) Ten adult American.
Eventually, the proposed technique made possible to recognize the basic emotion in most of the cases
MULTI-MODAL TASK INSTRUCTIONS TO ROBOTS BY NAIVE USERS
This thesis presents a theoretical framework for the design of user-programmable
robots. The objective of the work is to investigate multi-modal unconstrained natural
instructions given to robots in order to design a learning robot. A corpus-centred
approach is used to design an agent that can reason, learn and interact with a human in a
natural unconstrained way. The corpus-centred design approach is formalised and
developed in detail. It requires the developer to record a human during interaction and
analyse the recordings to find instruction primitives. These are then implemented into a
robot. The focus of this work has been on how to combine speech and gesture using
rules extracted from the analysis of a corpus. A multi-modal integration algorithm is
presented, that can use timing and semantics to group, match and unify gesture and
language. The algorithm always achieves correct pairings on a corpus and initiates
questions to the user in ambiguous cases or missing information. The domain of card
games has been investigated, because of its variety of games which are rich in rules and
contain sequences. A further focus of the work is on the translation of rule-based
instructions. Most multi-modal interfaces to date have only considered sequential
instructions. The combination of frame-based reasoning, a knowledge base organised as
an ontology and a problem solver engine is used to store these rules. The understanding
of rule instructions, which contain conditional and imaginary situations require an agent
with complex reasoning capabilities. A test system of the agent implementation is also
described. Tests to confirm the implementation by playing back the corpus are
presented. Furthermore, deployment test results with the implemented agent and human
subjects are presented and discussed. The tests showed that the rate of errors that are
due to the sentences not being defined in the grammar does not decrease by an
acceptable rate when new grammar is introduced. This was particularly the case for
