Infrastructure to Simulate Intelligent Agents in Cloud Environments
Nowadays there is a clear trend towards using methods and tools that can help the development of Simulation Systems. In this regard, Multiagent System (MAS) is a key technology that allows simulating user behavior. When the user is the focus of the simulation, Ambient Intelligent (AmI) increases in importance. AmI is an emerging multidisciplinary area based on ubiquitous computing that aims to adapt the environment to the needs of the user. Moreover, Cloud Computing is revolutionizing the services provided through the Internet, continually adapting itself in order to maintain the quality of its services. This study presents a multiagent based middleware for the simulation of agent behavior in cloud environments, and uses this information to adapt to the environment as AmI proposed. The main challenge of this work is the design and development of a new middleware that makes possible the communication between the technology in charge of the development of MAS and the technology in charge of the simulation, visualization and analysis of the behavior of the agents using the potential of cloud computing. The platform makes the computation and communication possible by following the principles proposed by AmI
Modeling the Internet of Things: a simulation perspective
This paper deals with the problem of properly simulating the Internet of
Things (IoT). Simulating an IoT allows evaluating strategies that can be
employed to deploy smart services over different kinds of territories. However,
the heterogeneity of scenarios seriously complicates this task. This imposes
the use of sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques. We discuss novel
approaches for the provision of scalable simulation scenarios, that enable the
real-time execution of massively populated IoT environments. Attention is given
to novel hybrid and multi-level simulation techniques that, when combined with
agent-based, adaptive Parallel and Distributed Simulation (PADS) approaches,
can provide means to perform highly detailed simulations on demand. To support
this claim, we detail a use case concerned with the simulation of vehicular

A Self-adaptive Agent-based System for Cloud Platforms
Cloud computing is a model for enabling on-demand network access to a shared
pool of computing resources, that can be dynamically allocated and released
with minimal effort. However, this task can be complex in highly dynamic
environments with various resources to allocate for an increasing number of
different users requirements. In this work, we propose a Cloud architecture
based on a multi-agent system exhibiting a self-adaptive behavior to address
the dynamic resource allocation. This self-adaptive system follows a MAPE-K
approach to reason and act, according to QoS, Cloud service information, and
propagated run-time information, to detect QoS degradation and make better
resource allocation decisions. We validate our proposed Cloud architecture by
simulation. Results show that it can properly allocate resources to reduce
energy consumption, while satisfying the users demanded QoS
Socio-Economic Mechanisms to Coordinate the Internet of Services: The Simulation Environment SimIS
Visions of 21st century information systems show highly specialized digital services and resources, which interact continuously and with a global reach. Especially with the emergence of technologies, such as the semantic web or software agents, intelligent services within these settings can be implemented, automatically communicating and negotiating over the Internet about digital resources without human intervention. Such environments will eventually realize the vision of an open and global Internet of Services (IoS). In this paper we present an agent-based simulation model and toolkit for the IoS: 'SimIS - Simulating an Internet of Services'. Distributed Hybrid Simulation of the Internet of Things and Smart Territories
This paper deals with the use of hybrid simulation to build and compose
heterogeneous simulation scenarios that can be proficiently exploited to model
and represent the Internet of Things (IoT). Hybrid simulation is a methodology
that combines multiple modalities of modeling/simulation. Complex scenarios are
decomposed into simpler ones, each one being simulated through a specific
simulation strategy. All these simulation building blocks are then synchronized
and coordinated. This simulation methodology is an ideal one to represent IoT
setups, which are usually very demanding, due to the heterogeneity of possible
scenarios arising from the massive deployment of an enormous amount of sensors
and devices. We present a use case concerned with the distributed simulation of
smart territories, a novel view of decentralized geographical spaces that,
thanks to the use of IoT, builds ICT services to manage resources in a way that
is sustainable and not harmful to the environment. Three different simulation
models are combined together, namely, an adaptive agent-based parallel and
distributed simulator, an OMNeT++ based discrete event simulator and a
script-language simulator based on MATLAB. Results from a performance analysis
confirm the viability of using hybrid simulation to model complex IoT

Cloud Enabled Emergency Navigation Using Faster-than-real-time Simulation
State-of-the-art emergency navigation approaches are designed to evacuate
civilians during a disaster based on real-time decisions using a pre-defined
algorithm and live sensory data. Hence, casualties caused by the poor decisions
and guidance are only apparent at the end of the evacuation process and cannot
then be remedied. Previous research shows that the performance of routing
algorithms for evacuation purposes are sensitive to the initial distribution of
evacuees, the occupancy levels, the type of disaster and its as well its
locations. Thus an algorithm that performs well in one scenario may achieve bad
results in another scenario. This problem is especially serious in
heuristic-based routing algorithms for evacuees where results are affected by
the choice of certain parameters. Therefore, this paper proposes a
simulation-based evacuee routing algorithm that optimises evacuation by making
use of the high computational power of cloud servers. Rather than guiding
evacuees with a predetermined routing algorithm, a robust Cognitive Packet
Network based algorithm is first evaluated via a cloud-based simulator in a
faster-than-real-time manner, and any "simulated casualties" are then re-routed
using a variant of Dijkstra's algorithm to obtain new safe paths for them to
exits. This approach can be iterated as long as corrective action is still

intelligent system units as a conglomerate of distributed, autonomous, intelligent, proactive, fault-tolerant,
and reusable units, which operate as a set of cooperating entities (Colombo and Karnouskos,
2009). These entities are forming an evolvable infrastructure, entering and/or going out (plug-in/plugout)
in an asynchronous manner. Moreover, these entities, having each of them their own functionalities,

Allocating Limited Resources to Protect a Massive Number of Targets using a Game Theoretic Model
Resource allocation is the process of optimizing the rare resources. In the
area of security, how to allocate limited resources to protect a massive number
of targets is especially challenging. This paper addresses this resource
allocation issue by constructing a game theoretic model. A defender and an
attacker are players and the interaction is formulated as a trade-off between
protecting targets and consuming resources. The action cost which is a
necessary role of consuming resource, is considered in the proposed model.
Additionally, a bounded rational behavior model (Quantal Response, QR), which
simulates a human attacker of the adversarial nature, is introduced to improve
the proposed model. To validate the proposed model, we compare the different
utility functions and resource allocation strategies. The comparison results
suggest that the proposed resource allocation strategy performs better than

The Quest for Scalability and Accuracy in the Simulation of the Internet of Things: an Approach based on Multi-Level Simulation
This paper presents a methodology for simulating the Internet of Things (IoT)
using multi-level simulation models. With respect to conventional simulators,
this approach allows us to tune the level of detail of different parts of the
model without compromising the scalability of the simulation. As a use case, we
have developed a two-level simulator to study the deployment of smart services
over rural territories. The higher level is base on a coarse grained,
agent-based adaptive parallel and distributed simulator. When needed, this
simulator spawns OMNeT++ model instances to evaluate in more detail the issues
concerned with wireless communications in restricted areas of the simulated
world. The performance evaluation confirms the viability of multi-level
