The effects of pictures on the order of accessing online war stories

    Get PDF
Research on how people read news stories has shown that readers chose to read and access news stories associated with pictures that contained an element of attraction. Researchers have found that the emotional elements within the picture could also play a role. It is unclear how neutral human interest pictures influence readers to access news stories. Is the access process influenced by less emotive pictures or more human interest elements? These issues were explored in an experiment in which 24 students participated. The experiment compared similar news that was accompanied with a human interest picture, information graphic and without information graphic. The focus of the news stories was on war news which almost always contained human interest elements that could be neutral or emotion-laden. The experiment suggested that human interest pictures of war stories could be equally effective in attracting readers to read and remember the news stories

    Piranesi's Initials - Information Graphic

    Get PDF
Type specimens are defined as typographic design that showcases a typeface design and its use. Information graphics can both present and explain the context for a new type design. These Initial forms were revived into an information graphic diagram to explain the content of Piranes’s letterform ‘beliefs’ within the Graeco-Roman debate. This graphic explains Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s plate 41 Fig. II and III of Le Antichità Romane. Where single capital ‘E’ is highlighted with the addition of component serifs as the source of the Roman. This insight provides the potential to extend the ETRVSCA font into a larger family of both serif-less and partial vestigial serif fonts within future practice-based research. The research and development of Pirenesi’s Initials were explained at TypeThursday London (Cambridge) symposium on 09 May 2019. Research Question(s): How will engaging in practice-based research inform the development of a new primal sans typeface, leading to new insights into the context of the serif-less letterforms of the eighteenth-century

Designing Environmental Graphic Design With Cultural Values for West Java Province

This paper departs from the phenomenon of the need for city or regional identity in public spaces. The people of Bandung and West Java created the identity of the city and region in the form of gates and monuments bordering the environmental area which in terminology can be called Environmental Graphic Design (EGD). The form of exploration is very diverse, and adapted to the abilities and creativity of the people in the environment. The making of EGD by the public often presents primordial cultural symbols especially Kujang forms, but the use of the Kujang symbol is very diverse and has not yet become an identity system that fulfills its existence as an EGD. This paper will analyze the Kujang symbol as an artefact of Sundanese culture, as well as provide design solutions, in the form of an EGD system based on cultural values that lie in the philosophical values of the Kujang cosmology and Sundanese culture values. The methodology used is descriptive qualitative and design thinking The result of this paper is to design visual ideas about EGD based on cultural values and Sundanese cultural philosophy, especially the Kujang symbol which can be used as a benchmark for people who EGD in West Java Province. Large amounts of data are collected and stored within universities, but little is done to reuse this data to support decision making processes. This paper discusses the use of data visualisation and statistical analysis as methods of making sense of the collected data, analysing it to assess the effects of historical institutional decisions and discusses the use of such techniques to aid decision making processes

Image analysis of a tourist destination: Malaga, Spain

    Get PDF
The destination image is multidimensional in nature and the knowledge the individuals have of the destination and also their personal traits and opinions play an important role in it. Therefore, it is a complex construction in which the different information sources are decisive. Thus, the destination image plays a key role in both marketing and tourism location. The city of Malaga, located in Southern Spain, lies on the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun), a tourist area largely identified with seaside tourism. In recent years Malaga city has been trying to distance itself from the “sun and sand” tourism segment and it has chosen to position itself as a cultural destination (Diario Sur, 2014; The New York Times, 2015). In this regard, the effectiveness of the image of Malaga differentiated from a seaside destination image is analysed in the present study. The main objective of this research is to perform an analysis of the current image of the city and of the target one. A detailed study of the obtained results will enable us to take a close look at the tourists’ attitudes towards Malaga city and it will provide us with information to improve or design new differentiation strategies. This is the first academic study on Malaga’s destination image. Malaga is a Spanish municipality in Andalusia and it is located, as already mentioned, in the Costa del Sol, beside the Mediterranean Sea. The city had 566,913 inhabitants (2014) and an accommodation supply of 9,598 bed places and nearly one million of tourists (2013). We decided to focus the research on Malaga city, on the Costal del Sol, Spain, a traditionally touristic place which in the recent years is trying to specialize in urban and cultural tourismUniversidad de Málaga, Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech2018-01-0

Generating Visual Arguments: a Media-independent Approach

    Get PDF
... In this paper, we take the position that certain types of arguments that can be presented visually in information graphics (e.g., bar charts and scatter plots) can be generated from an underlying media-independent representation of a presentation. In support of this claim, first we briefly describe the architecture we are developing for the generation of integrated text and information graphics presentations. In this architecture, mediaindependent communicative acts are transformed into user task specifications which are the basis for the automatic design of the presentation's graphics. Then we present an example showing correspondences between the media-independent representation of an argument and the tasks that would be used to design a graphic expressing the argument

WAC in FYW: building bridges and teachers as architects

    Get PDF
Students entering the first-year writing classroom directly out of high school often tell me that they had to 'write differently for each teacher and class.' Imagine their confusion and apprehension when they are told that one of the objectives of FYW is to prepare them for academic writing across all disciplines! How can teachers incorporate cross-curricular skills into their lessons? More importantly, amongst the already-complex demands on the purposes and goals of FYW courses, how do students learn these techniques that teachers deem 'easily-transferrable'? I argue, first, that the FYW classroom is an ideal location to present students with the individual tools for writing in any discipline. We discuss elements of writing like organization, idea development, thesis statements, citation, and the writing process within our courses as part of the standard curriculum. Therefore, I argue that the multi-faceted roles of FYW teachers include the characteristic of architect, and assert that transforming our lessons into WAC lessons involves the incorporation of examples, standards, and formats from outside disciplines. Mentioning how thesis statements tie together English and Religion papers or how dividing a paper into sections enhances the organization of Biology lab reports and Business reports establishes connections for students. With some simple additions to teachers' lessons, students will find that the writing techniques they learn are just as crucial and useful in both core and major classes. Building these bridges reinforces the lifelong importance of writing and helps students continue to develop their writing skills across and through the college curriculum
