Numerical study of surface tension driven convection in thermal magnetic fluids

    Get PDF
Microgravity conditions pose unique challenges for fluid handling and heat transfer applications. By controlling (curtailing or augmenting) the buoyant and thermocapillary convection, the latter being the dominant convective flow in a microgravity environment, significant advantages can be achieved in space based processing. The control of this surface tension gradient driven flow is sought using a magnetic field, and the effects of these are studied computationally. A two-fluid layer system, with the lower fluid being a non-conducting ferrofluid, is considered under the influence of a horizontal temperature gradient. To capture the deformable interface, a numerical method to solve the Navier???Stokes equations, heat equations, and Maxwell???s equations was developed using a hybrid level set/ volume-of-fluid technique. The convective velocities and heat fluxes were studied under various regimes of the thermal Marangoni number Ma, the external field represented by the magnetic Bond number Bom, and various gravity levels, Fr. Regimes where the convection were either curtailed or augmented were identified. It was found that the surface force due to the step change in the magnetic permeability at the interface could be suitably utilized to control the instability at the interface.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

Charge injection enhanced natural convection heat transfer in horizontal concentric annuli filled with a dielectric liquid

    Get PDF
The natural convection heat transfer in a highly insulating liquid contained between two horizontal concentric cylinders is shown by two-dimensional numerical simulations to be noticeably enhanced by imposing a direct current electric field. This augmentation of heat transfer is due to the radial flow motion induced by unipolar injection of ions. It is found that there exists a threshold of the electric driving parameter T, above which the heat transfer enhancement due to the electric effect becomes significant. For relatively small T values, the mean Nusselt numbers are closely related to the flow pattern and Rayleigh number Ra. In addition, for sufficiently high T values, the flow is fully dominated by the Coulomb force, and thus the heat transfer rate no long depends on Ra.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología FIS2011-25161Junta de Andalucía P10-FQM-5735Junta de Andalucía P09-FQM-458

Numerical evaluation of heat transfer enhancement due to annular electroconvection induced by injection in a dielectric liquid

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out to evaluate the enhancement of natural convection heat transfer in a dielectric liquid resulting from injection induced annular electro-convection. The liquid is confined between two concentric horizontal cylinders and subjected to the simultaneous actions of a direct current electric field and a thermal gradient. A unipolar injection from the inner cylinder introduces free space charges into the liquid. Numerical results are presented for the configuration of inner to outer diameter ratio of 0.5 and silicon oil as the working medium. It is found that the charge injection may induce a strong radial fluid motion, which consequently augments the heat transfer rate. Due to the linear stability nature of electro-convection, there exists a threshold value of the electric driving parameter, above which the electrical enhancement becomes manifest. In addition, when the electric driving parameter is sufficiently high, the flow is fully dominated by the Coulomb force, and thus heat transfer becomes independent of the thermal driving parameter.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología FIS2011-25161Junta de Andalucía P10-FQM-5735Junta de Andalucía P09-FQM-458

Fluid physics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer experiments in space

    Get PDF
An overstudy committee was formed to study and recommend fundamental experiments in fluid physics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer for experimentation in orbit, using the space shuttle system and a space laboratory. The space environment, particularly the low-gravity condition, is an indispensable requirement for all the recommended experiments. The experiments fell broadly into five groups: critical-point thermophysical phenomena, fluid surface dynamics and capillarity, convection at reduced gravity, non-heated multiphase mixtures, and multiphase heat transfer. The Committee attempted to assess the effects of g-jitter and other perturbations of the gravitational field on the conduct of the experiments. A series of ground-based experiments are recommended to define some of the phenomena and to develop reliable instrumentation

High speed cylindrical roller bearing analysis, SKF computer program CYBEAN. Volume 2: User's manual

    Get PDF
The CYBEAN (Cylindrical Bearing Analysis) was created to detail radially loaded, aligned and misaligned cylindrical roller bearing performance under a variety of operating conditions. Emphasis was placed on detailing the effects of high speed, preload and system thermal coupling. Roller tilt, skew, radial, circumferential and axial displacement as well as flange contact were considered. Variable housing and flexible out-of-round outer ring geometries, and both steady state and time transient temperature calculations were enabled. The complete range of elastohydrodynamic contact considerations, employing full and partial film conditions were treated in the computation of raceway and flange contacts. Input and output architectures containing guidelines for use and a sample execution are detailed

Study the effect of sliding frequency on reciprocating sliding wear test for titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V

Titanium alloys are widely used in the aerospace, automotive, chemical and biomedical industries. Titanium and its alloys have excellent corrosion resistance towards many of the highly corrosive environments, particularly, oxidizing and chloride containing process streams due to their excellent combination of low density, high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility (Feng & Xu, 2006). This material have evoked sufficient interest among tribologists due to their poor performance when subjected to wear (Argatov, 2011); (Chen & Zhou, 2001). Tribo contact between uncoated titanium alloy once the coated completely used are crucial and these need to be study and analyse
