    Object-oriented querying of existing relational databases

    In this paper, we present algorithms which allow an object-oriented querying of existing relational databases. Our goal is to provide an improved query interface for relational systems with better query facilities than SQL. This seems to be very important since, in real world applications, relational systems are most commonly used and their dominance will remain in the near future. To overcome the drawbacks of relational systems, especially the poor query facilities of SQL, we propose a schema transformation and a query translation algorithm. The schema transformation algorithm uses additional semantic information to enhance the relational schema and transform it into a corresponding object-oriented schema. If the additional semantic information can be deducted from an underlying entity-relationship design schema, the schema transformation may be done fully automatically. To query the created object-oriented schema, we use the Structured Object Query Language (SOQL) which provides declarative query facilities on objects. SOQL queries using the created object-oriented schema are much shorter, easier to write and understand and more intuitive than corresponding S Q L queries leading to an enhanced usability and an improved querying of the database. The query translation algorithm automatically translates SOQL queries into equivalent SQL queries for the original relational schema

    STRICT: a language and tool set for the design of very large scale integrated circuits

    PhD ThesisAn essential requirement for the design of large VLSI circuits is a design methodology which would allow the designer to overcome the complexity and correctness issues associated with the building of such circuits. We propose that many of the problems of the design of large circuits can be solved by using a formal design notation based upon the functional programming paradigm, that embodies design concepts that have been used extensively as the framework for software construction. The design notation should permit parallel, sequential, and recursive decompositions of a design into smaller components, and it should allow large circuits to be constructed from simpler circuits that can be embedded in a design in a modular fashion. Consistency checking should be provided as early as possible in a design. Such a methodology would structure the design of a circuit in much the same way that procedures, classes, and control structures may be used to structure large software systems. However, such a design notation must be supported by tools which automatically check the consistency of the design, if the methodology is to be practical. In principle, the methodology should impose constraints upon circuit design to reduce errors and provide' correctness by construction' . It should be possible to generate efficient and correct circuits, by providing a route to a large variety of design tools commonly found in design systems: simulators, automatic placement and routing tools, module generators, schematic capture tools, and formal verification and synthesis tools

    Calculational Proofs in ACL2s

    Teaching college students how to write rigorous proofs is a critical objective in courses that introduce formal reasoning. Over the course of several years, we have developed a mechanically-checkable style of calculational reasoning that we used to teach over a thousand freshman-level undergraduate students how to reason about computation in our "Logic and Computation" class at Northeastern University. We were inspired by Dijkstra, who advocated the use of calculational proofs, writing "calculational proofs are almost always more effective than all informal alternatives, ..., the design of calculational proofs seems much more teachable than the elusive art of discovering an informal proof." Our calculational proof checker is integrated into ACL2s and is available as an Eclipse IDE plugin, via a Web interface, and as a stand-alone tool. It automatically checks proofs for correctness and provides useful feedback. We describe the architecture of the checker, its proof format, its underlying algorithms, its correctness and provide examples using proofs from our undergraduate class and from Dijkstra. We also describe our experiences using the proof checker to teach undergraduates how to formally reason about computation

    An approach to display layout of dynamic windows

    The development of windows based user interface has introduced a new dimension to the field of human computer interaction. Now a user is able to perform multiple tasks at a time, often switching from one task to another. However windows environment also imposes the burden of manual windows management on the user. Several studies have suggested that manual window management is an unproductive chore often resulting in clutter and confusion on the display screen. Therefore we need a automatic windows layout generator to free the user to perform other useful tasks. This thesis introduces SPORDAC {Shadow Propagation for Overlap Removal and Display Area Compaction) algorithm. This algorithm aims to remove overlap from the display layout and encapsulate the layout in the finite display area. The SPORDAC prototype integrates the SPORDAC algorithm with simulated annealing to optimise the display area usage. The usefulness and applicability of the SPORDAC approach are illustrated with the implementation of a prototype, samples of generated layouts and analysis of the collected dat

UML is a language and notation for specification, construction, visualization, and documentation of models of software systems. It consists of a variety of diagrams including class diagrams and activity diagrams. Graph layout has become an important area of research in Computer Science for the last couple of decades. There is a wide range of applications for graph layout including data structures, databases, software engineering, VLSI technology, electrical engineering, production planning, chemistry, and biology. Diagrams are more effective means of expressing relational information and automatic graph layout makes them to be more comprehensible. In other words, with graph layout techniques, the readability and the comprehensibility of the graphs increases and the complexity is reduced. UML diagrams are no exception. In this thesis, we present graph layout algorithms for UML activity diagrams based on constrained hierarchical layout.     Probabilistic Image Models and their Massively Parallel Architectures : A Seamless Simulation- and VLSI Design-Framework Approach

    Algorithmic robustness in real-world scenarios and real-time processing capabilities are the two essential and at the same time contradictory requirements modern image-processing systems have to fulfill to go significantly beyond state-of-the-art systems. Without suitable image processing and analysis systems at hand, which comply with the before mentioned contradictory requirements, solutions and devices for the application scenarios of the next generation will not become reality. This issue would eventually lead to a serious restraint of innovation for various branches of industry. This thesis presents a coherent approach to the above mentioned problem. The thesis at first describes a massively parallel architecture template and secondly a seamless simulation- and semiconductor-technology-independent design framework for a class of probabilistic image models, which are formulated on a regular Markovian processing grid. The architecture template is composed of different building blocks, which are rigorously derived from Markov Random Field theory with respect to the constraints of \it massively parallel processing \rm and \it technology independence\rm. This systematic derivation procedure leads to many benefits: it decouples the architecture characteristics from constraints of one specific semiconductor technology; it guarantees that the derived massively parallel architecture is in conformity with theory; and it finally guarantees that the derived architecture will be suitable for VLSI implementations. The simulation-framework addresses the unique hardware-relevant simulation needs of MRF based processing architectures. Furthermore the framework ensures a qualified representation for simulation of the image models and their massively parallel architectures by means of their specific simulation modules. This allows for systematic studies with respect to the combination of numerical, architectural, timing and massively parallel processing constraints to disclose novel insights into MRF models and their hardware architectures. The design-framework rests upon a graph theoretical approach, which offers unique capabilities to fulfill the VLSI demands of massively parallel MRF architectures: the semiconductor technology independence guarantees a technology uncommitted architecture for several design steps without restricting the design space too early; the design entry by means of behavioral descriptions allows for a functional representation without determining the architecture at the outset; and the topology-synthesis simplifies and separates the data- and control-path synthesis. Detailed results discussed in the particular chapters together with several additional results collected in the appendix will further substantiate the claims made in this thesis
