    Assessment of disk MHD generators for a base load powerplant

    Results from a study of the disk MHD generator are presented. Both open and closed cycle disk systems were investigated. Costing of the open cycle disk components (nozzle, channel, diffuser, radiant boiler, magnet and power management) was done. However, no detailed costing was done for the closed cycle systems. Preliminary plant design for the open cycle systems was also completed. Based on the system study results, an economic assessment of the open cycle systems is presented. Costs of the open cycle disk conponents are less than comparable linear generator components. Also, costs of electricity for the open cycle disk systems are competitive with comparable linear systems. Advantages of the disk design simplicity are considered. Improvements in the channel availability or a reduction in the channel lifetime requirement are possible as a result of the disk design

    Rankine Cycle efficiency gain using thermoelectric heat pumps

    The Rankine cycle remains the dominant method of thermal plant electricity generation in the world today. The cycle was described over 150 years ago and significant performance advances continue to be realised. On-going metallurgy research has enabled the operating pressure and temperature of the boiler and turbine to be increased, thereby improving the cycle efficiency. The ubiquitous use of the Rankine cycle on a massive scale in conjunction with fossil fuels as the energy source continues to motivate further efficiency improvements in the cycle.<p></p> Previous work established a theoretical basis for the use of thermoelectric heat pumps (THPs) in the condensation process of the Rankine cycle to positively impact cycle efficiency. The work presented here experimentally validates this prior work and provides performance metrics for current commercially available THPs and quantifies how their use can increase the efficiency of the Rankine cycle as implemented in a large power plant.<p></p> A commercial THP is characterised to obtain its Coefficient of Performance (COP) variation with input current and the amount of thermal energy transported. A larger-scale system comprising of a multistage thermoelectric heat pump is then considered, demonstrating that using commonly available THPs a fuel load reduction of over 1.5% is achievable for a typical generating set whilst simultaneously increasing the overall plant cycle efficiency from 44.9% to 45.05%.<p></p> The paper concludes with a cost-benefit analysis of the system, showing that over a four year period the saving in fuel used can easily re-coup the capital cost incurred by the addition of the condenser heat pump

    Improving the Accuracy and Scope of Control-Oriented Vapor Compression Cycle System Models

    The benefits of applying advanced control techniques to vapor compression cycle systems are well know. The main advantages are improved performance and efficiency, the achievement of which brings both economic and environmental gains. One of the most significant hurdles to the practical application of advanced control techniques is the development of a dynamic system level model that is both accurate and mathematically tractable. Previous efforts in control-oriented modeling have produced a class of heat exchanger models known as moving-boundary models. When combined with mass flow device models, these moving-boundary models provide an excellent framework for both dynamic analysis and control design. This thesis contains the results of research carried out to increase both the accuracy and scope of these system level models. The improvements to the existing vapor compression cycle models are carried out through the application of various modeling techniques, some static and some dynamic, some data-based and some physics-based. Semiempirical static modeling techniques are used to increase the accuracy of both heat exchangers and mass flow devices over a wide range of operating conditions. Dynamic modeling techniques are used both to derive new component models that are essential to the simulation of very common vapor compression cycle systems and to improve the accuracy of the existing compressor model. A new heat exchanger model that accounts for the effects of moisture in the air is presented. All of these model improvements and additions are unified to create a simple but accurate system level model with a wide range of application. Extensive model validation results are presented, providing both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the new models and model improvements.Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Project 17

    A 2-watt, 4-K helium refrigerator using the Gifford-McMahon/Joule Thomson cycle is described. The unit features a removable displacer cylinder and high-efficiency, low-pressure drop heat exchangers. These improvements result in a 100 percent increase in cooling power over the existing Deep Space Network system. The effects of the heat exchanger efficiency and Gifford-McMahon expander performance on refrigerator capacity are also discussed

    Experimental analysis of IMEP in a rotary combustion engine

    A real time indicated mean effective pressure measurement system is described which is used to judge proposed improvements in cycle efficiency of a rotary combustion engine. This is the first self-contained instrument that is capable of making real time measurements of IMEP in a rotary engine. Previous methods used require data recording and later processing using a digital computer. The unique features of this instrumentation include its ability to measure IMEP on a cycle by cycle, real time basis and the elimination of the need to differentiate volume function in real time. Measurements at two engine speeds (2000 and 3000 rpm) and a full range of loads are presented, although the instrument was designed to operate to speeds of 9000 rpm

    Some effects of digital sampling on orbiter flight control system operation

    An entry dynamic stability ground test of the OV102 Space Shuttle Orbiter revealed some small amplitude oscillatory output of the flight control system which could have constrained flight of the STS-1 mission. These limit-cycle-type outputs were attributed to a combination of rigid body motion of the Orbiter on its landing gear and some interesting effects of its digital flight control system. These effects included frequency aliasing and phenomena associated with digital quantitization of low amplitude sensor signals. The digital effects suggest significant improvements possible in future designs

    Methods of reducing energy consumption of the oxidant supply system for MHD/steam power plants

    An in-depth study was conducted to identify possible improvements to the oxidant supply system for combined cycle MHD power plants which would lead to higher thermal efficiency and reduction in the cost of electricity, COE. Results showed that the oxidant system energy consumption could be minimized when the process was designed to deliver a product O2 concentration of 70 mole percent. The study also led to the development of a new air separation process, referred to as liquid pumping and internal compression. MHD system performance calculations show that the new process would permit an increase in plant thermal efficiency of 0.6 percent while allowing more favorable tradeoffs between magnetic energy and oxidant system capacity requirements

    This research is an attempt to create a comprehensive assessment framework for identifying and assessing potential improvement options of cement production systems. From an environmental systems analysis perspective, this study provides both an empirical account and a methodological approach for quantifying the CO2 footprint of a cement production system. An attributional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is performed to analyze the CO2 footprint of several products of a cement production system in Germany which consists of three dierent plants. Based on the results of the LCA study, six key performance indicators are dened as the basis for a simplied LCA model. This model is used to quantify the CO2 footprint of dierent versions of the cement production system. In order to identify potential improvement options, a framework for Multi-Criteria Assessment (MCA) is developed. The search and classication guideline of this framework is based on the concepts of Cleaner Production, Industrial Ecology, and Industrial Symbiosis. It allows systematic identication and classication of potential improvement options. In addition, it can be used for feasibility and applicability evaluation of dierent options. This MCA is applied both on a generic level, reecting the future landscape of the industry, and on a production organization level re ecting the most applicable possibilities for change. Based on this assessment a few appropriate futureoriented scenarios for the studied cement production system are constructed. The simplied LCA model is used to quantify the CO2 footprint of the production system for each scenario. By integrating Life Cycle Assessment and Multi-Criteria Assessment approaches, this study provides a comprehensive assessment method for identifying suitable industrial developments and quantifying the CO2 footprint improvements that might be achieved by their implementation. The results of this study emphasis, although by utilizing alternative fuels and more ecient production facility, it is possible to improve the CO2 footprint of clinker, radical improvements can be achieved on the portfolio level. Compared to Portland cement, very high reduction of CO2 footprint can be achieved if clinker is replaced with low carbon alternatives, such as Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) which are the by-products of other  industrial production. Benchmarking a cement production system by its portfolio product is therefore a more reasonable approach, compared to focusing on the performance of its clinker production. This study showed that Industrial Symbiosis, that is, over the fence initiatives for material and energy exchanges and collaboration with nontraditional partners, are relevant to cement industry. However, the contingent nature of these strategies should always be noted, because the mere exercise of such activities may not lead to a more resource ecient production system. Therefore, in search for potential improvements, it is important to keep the search horizon as wide as possible, however, assess the potential improvements in each particular case. The comprehensive framework developed and applied in this research is an attempt in this direction
