    Diseño e implementación de un control difuso de temperatura para microplanta de cocción de cerveza artesanal mediante PLC

    In this study, a fuzzy-based PLC temperature control system was designed and implemented on a craft beer production plant. At present, the temperature-related controls of small-scale plants in Colombia are based on On/Off models, which are not very stable in the preparation of craft beer, which generates significant changes in flavor, scent and texture. Therefore, it is intended to incorporate into the craft beer industry, solutions that guarantee repeatability, minimize costs and potentiate production, for this, a three-stage fuzzy control model is carried out: design, implementation and start up; This is how a study of the plant´s dynamics is carried out, the response is determined from the data, a fuzzy controller is designed by using Matlab software, and a graphical interface in LabView for data capture and storage. The controller demonstrates stability in relation to the temperature variable, which provides repeatability and significant energy savings. Finally, it is concluded that the controller proved to be robust against major disturbances and stable at different temperatures, being a useful tool for efficiently controlling the variable.En este estudio se diseñó e implementó un sistema de control difuso de temperatura basado en PLC sobre una planta de cocción de cerveza artesanal. En la actualidad los controles relacionados a temperatura de las plantas a baja escala en Colombia se basan en modelos On/Off, que son poco estables en la preparación de la cerveza artesanal, lo que genera modificaciones significativas en el sabor, el aroma y la textura. Por tanto, se pretende incorporar en la industria de cerveza artesanal, soluciones que garanticen repetibilidad, minimicen los costos y potencialicen la producción, para ello, se realiza un modelo de control difuso en tres etapas: diseño, implementación y puesta en marcha; se realiza un estudio de la dinámica de la planta. A partir de los datos se determina la respuesta, se diseña un controlador difuso mediante software Matlab, y una interfaz gráfica en LabView para captura y almacenamiento de datos. El controlador demostró estabilidad en relación a la variable, lo que proporciona repetibilidad y un ahorro energético significativo. Finalmente se concluye que el controlador demostró ser robusto ante grandes perturbaciones y estable ante diferentes temperaturas siendo una herramienta útil para controlar de manera eficiente esta variable

In the biomanufacturing sector, big data infrastructure is lagging comparatively to other industries. A promising approach is to combine Deep Neural Networks (DNN) with prior knowledge in Hybrid Neural Network (HNN) workflows that are less dependent on the quality and quantity of data. This paper reviews published articles over the past 30 years on the topic of HNN applications to bioprocesses. It revealed that HNNs were applied to various bioprocesses, including microbial cultures, animal cells cultures, mixed microbial cultures, and enzyme biocatalysis. HNNs were mainly applied for process analysis, process monitoring, development of software sensors, open- and closed-loop control, batch-to-batch control, model predictive control, intensified design of experiments, quality-by-design, and recently for the development of digital twins. Most previous HNN studies combined shallow Feedforward Neural Networks (FFNNs) with physical laws, such as macroscopic material balance equations, following the semiparametric design principle. Only recently, deep HNNs based on deep FFNNs, Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have been reported.     Novel analysis and modelling methodologies applied to pultrusion and other processes

    Often a manufacturing process may be a bottleneck or critical to a business. This thesis focuses on the analysis and modelling of such processest, to both better understand them, and to support the enhancement of quality or output capability of the process. The main thrusts of this thesis therefore are: To model inter-process physics, inter-relationships, and complex processes in a manner that enables re-exploitation, re-interpretation and reuse of this knowledge and generic elements e.g. using Object Oriented (00) & Qualitative Modelling (QM) techniques. This involves the development of superior process models to capture process complexity and reuse any generic elements; To demonstrate advanced modelling and simulation techniques (e.g. Artificial Neural Networks(ANN), Rule-Based-Systems (RBS), and statistical modelling) on a number of complex manufacturing case studies; To gain a better understanding of the physics and process inter-relationships exhibited in a number of complex manufacturing processes (e.g. pultrusion, bioprocess, and logistics) using analysis and modelling. To these ends, both a novel Object Oriented Qualitative (Problem) Analysis (OOQA) methodology, and a novel Artificial Neural Network Process Modelling (ANNPM) methodology were developed and applied to a number of complex manufacturing case studies- thermoset and thermoplastic pultrusion, bioprocess reactor, and a logistics supply chain. It has been shown that these methodologies and the models developed support capture of complex process inter-relationships, enable reuse of generic elements, support effective variable selection for ANN models, and perform well as a predictor of process properties. In particular the ANN pultrusion models, using laboratory data from IKV, Aachen and Pera, Melton Mowbray, predicted product properties very well

    Biological investigation and predictive modelling of foaming in anaerobic digester

    Anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste has been identified as a leading technology for greener renewable energy generation as an alternative to fossil fuel. AD will reduce waste through biochemical processes, converting it to biogas which could be used as a source of renewable energy and the residue bio-solids utilised in enriching the soil. A problem with AD though is with its foaming and the associated biogas loss. Tackling this problem effectively requires identifying and effectively controlling factors that trigger and promote foaming. In this research, laboratory experiments were initially carried out to differentiate foaming causal and exacerbating factors. Then the impact of the identified causal factors (organic loading rate-OLR and volatile fatty acid-VFA) on foaming occurrence were monitored and recorded. Further analysis of foaming and nonfoaming sludge samples by metabolomics techniques confirmed that the OLR and VFA are the prime causes of foaming occurrence in AD. In addition, the metagenomics analysis showed that the phylum bacteroidetes and proteobacteria were found to be predominant with a higher relative abundance of 30% and 29% respectively while the phylum actinobacteria representing the most prominent filamentous foam causing bacteria such as Norcadia amarae and Microthrix Parvicella had a very low and consistent relative abundance of 0.9% indicating that the foaming occurrence in the AD studied was not triggered by the presence of filamentous bacteria. Consequently, data driven models to predict foam formation were developed based on experimental data with inputs (OLR and VFA in the feed) and output (foaming occurrence). The models were extensively validated and assessed based on the mean squared error (MSE), root mean squared error (RMSE), R2 and mean absolute error (MAE). Levenberg Marquadt neural network model proved to be the best model for foaming prediction in AD, with RMSE = 5.49, MSE = 30.19 and R2 = 0.9435. The significance of this study is the development of a parsimonious and effective modelling tool that enable AD operators to proactively avert foaming occurrence, as the two model input variables (OLR and VFA) can be easily adjustable through simple programmable logic controller

    This book contains the extended abstracts presented at the 10th International Chemical and Biological Engineering Conference - CHEMPOR 2008, held in Braga, Portugal, over 3 days, from the 4th to the 6th of September, 2008. Previous editions took place in Lisboa (1975, 1889, 1998), Braga (1978), Póvoa de Varzim (1981), Coimbra (1985, 2005), Porto (1993), and Aveiro (2001). The conference was jointly organized by the University of Minho, “Ordem dos Engenheiros”, and the IBB - Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering with the usual support of the “Sociedade Portuguesa de Química” and, by the first time, of the “Sociedade Portuguesa de Biotecnologia”. Thirty years elapsed since CHEMPOR was held at the University of Minho, organized by T.R. Bott, D. Allen, A. Bridgwater, J.J.B. Romero, L.J.S. Soares and J.D.R.S. Pinheiro. We are fortunate to have Profs. Bott, Soares and Pinheiro in the Honor Committee of this 10th edition, under the high Patronage of his Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. Aníbal Cavaco Silva. The opening ceremony will confer Prof. Bott with a “Long Term Achievement” award acknowledging the important contribution Prof. Bott brought along more than 30 years to the development of the Chemical Engineering science, to the launch of CHEMPOR series and specially to the University of Minho. Prof. Bott’s inaugural lecture will address the importance of effective energy management in processing operations, particularly in the effectiveness of heat recovery and the associated reduction in greenhouse gas emission from combustion processes. The CHEMPOR series traditionally brings together both young and established researchers and end users to discuss recent developments in different areas of Chemical Engineering. The scope of this edition is broadening out by including the Biological Engineering research. One of the major core areas of the conference program is life quality, due to the importance that Chemical and Biological Engineering plays in this area. “Integration of Life Sciences & Engineering” and “Sustainable Process-Product Development through Green Chemistry” are two of the leading themes with papers addressing such important issues. Sin embargo, el grado de automatización del sistema productivo se encuentra de momento en una etapa inicial del recorrido que supone ponerse al nivel de otras industrias agroalimentarias. En este contexto, el trabajo que se desarrolla en la presente Tesis Doctoral tiene como objetivo profundizar en la aplicación de dos tecnologías no invasivas, espectroscopía en el infrarrojo cercano y visión por computador, para adquirir información a nivel de proceso, y en sus distintas etapas, y fundamentalmente con dos fines: (1) ayudar a determinar de forma cualitativa qué está ocurriendo en el proceso desde el punto de vista físico-químico y organoléptico, y (2) poder utilizar la información adquirida en estructuras de control automático de nivel local (subprocesos), global (proceso) o incluso en la toma de decisiones sobre el modo de operación de la planta como es el caso de la planificación de la producción.[EN]In recent years the production of virgin olive oil has experienced positive growth from qualitative and quantitative points of view, thanks to the transference of knowledge from the research centres to the production plant. One of the transfomation is related to the commercial activities addition by the house owner. It make house with full private space become into mixused house with more public spaces or completely changed into full public commercial building. This study investigate the spatial transformation pattern of the kampung houses due to their commercial activities addition. Site observations, interviews and questionnaires were performed to study the spatial transformation. This study found that in kampung houses, the spatial transformation pattern was depend on type of commercial activities and owner perceptions, and there are several steps of the spatial transformation related the commercial activity addition.
