    How Ordinary Elimination Became Gaussian Elimination

    Newton, in notes that he would rather not have seen published, described a process for solving simultaneous equations that later authors applied specifically to linear equations. This method that Euler did not recommend, that Legendre called "ordinary," and that Gauss called "common" - is now named after Gauss: "Gaussian" elimination. Gauss's name became associated with elimination through the adoption, by professional computers, of a specialized notation that Gauss devised for his own least squares calculations.     A robust multigrid approach for variational image registration models

    AbstractVariational registration models are non-rigid and deformable imaging techniques for accurate registration of two images. As with other models for inverse problems using the Tikhonov regularization, they must have a suitably chosen regularization term as well as a data fitting term. One distinct feature of registration models is that their fitting term is always highly nonlinear and this nonlinearity restricts the class of numerical methods that are applicable. This paper first reviews the current state-of-the-art numerical methods for such models and observes that the nonlinear fitting term is mostly ‘avoided’ in developing fast multigrid methods. It then proposes a unified approach for designing fixed point type smoothers for multigrid methods. The diffusion registration model (second-order equations) and a curvature model (fourth-order equations) are used to illustrate our robust methodology. Analysis of the proposed smoothers and comparisons to other methods are given. As expected of a multigrid method, being many orders of magnitude faster than the unilevel gradient descent approach, the proposed numerical approach delivers fast and accurate results for a range of synthetic and real test images

    Solar sail formation flying for deep-space remote sensing

    In this paper we consider how 'near' term solar sails can be used in formation above the ecliptic plane to provide platforms for accurate and continuous remote sensing of the polar regions of the Earth. The dynamics of the solar sail elliptical restricted three-body problem (ERTBP) are exploited for formation flying by identifying a family of periodic orbits above the ecliptic plane. Moreover, we find a family of 1 year periodic orbits where each orbit corresponds to a unique solar sail orientation using a numerical continuation method. It is found through a number of example numerical simulations that this family of orbits can be used for solar sail formation flying. Furthermore, it is illustrated numerically that Solar Sails can provide stable formation keeping platforms that are robust to injection errors. In addition practical trajectories that pass close to the Earth and wind onto these periodic orbits above the ecliptic are identified

    CELL-CENTERED LAGRANGIAN LAX-WENDROFF HLL HYBRID SCHEME ON UNSTRUCTURED MESHES

    We have recently introduced a new cell-centered Lax-Wendroff HLL hybrid scheme for Lagrangian hydrodynamics [Fridrich et al. J. Comp. Phys. 326 (2016) 878-892] with results presented only on logical rectangular quadrilateral meshes. In this study we present an improved version on unstructured meshes, including uniform triangular and hexagonal meshes and non-uniform triangular and polygonal meshes. The performance of the scheme is verified on Noh and Sedov problems and its second-order convergence is verified on a smooth expansion test.Finally the choice of the scalar parameter controlling the amount of added artificial dissipation is studied

    Variational Domain Decomposition For Parallel Image Processing

    Many important techniques in image processing rely on partial differential equation (PDE) problems, which exhibit spatial couplings between the unknowns throughout the whole image plane. Therefore, a straightforward spatial splitting into independent subproblems and subsequent parallel solving aimed at diminishing the total computation time does not lead to the solution of the original problem. Typically, significant errors at the local boundaries between the subproblems occur. For that reason, most of the PDE-based image processing algorithms are not directly amenable to coarse-grained parallel computing, but only to fine-grained parallelism, e.g. on the level of the particular arithmetic operations involved with the specific solving procedure. In contrast, Domain Decomposition (DD) methods provide several different approaches to decompose PDE problems spatially so that the merged local solutions converge to the original, global one. Thus, such methods distinguish between the two main classes of overlapping and non-overlapping methods, referring to the overlap between the adjacent subdomains on which the local problems are defined. Furthermore, the classical DD methods --- studied intensively in the past thirty years --- are primarily applied to linear PDE problems, whereas some of the current important image processing approaches involve solving of nonlinear problems, e.g. Total Variation (TV)-based approaches. Among the linear DD methods, non-overlapping methods are favored, since in general they require significanty fewer data exchanges between the particular processing nodes during the parallel computation and therefore reach a higher scalability. For that reason, the theoretical and empirical focus of this work lies primarily on non-overlapping methods, whereas for the overlapping methods we mainly stay with presenting the most important algorithms. With the linear non-overlapping DD methods, we first concentrate on the theoretical foundation, which serves as basis for gradually deriving the different algorithms thereafter. Although we make a connection between the very early methods on two subdomains and the current two-level methods on arbitrary numbers of subdomains, the experimental studies focus on two prototypical methods being applied to the model problem of estimating the optic flow, at which point different numerical aspects, such as the influence of the number of subdomains on the convergence rate, are explored. In particular, we present results of experiments conducted on a PC-cluster (a distributed memory parallel computer based on low-cost PC hardware for up to 144 processing nodes) which show a very good scalability of non-overlapping DD methods. With respect to nonlinear non-overlapping DD methods, we pursue two distinct approaches, both applied to nonlinear, PDE-based image denoising. The first approach draws upon the theory of optimal control, and has been successfully employed for the domain decomposition of Navier-Stokes equations. The second nonlinear DD approach, on the other hand, relies on convex programming and relies on the decomposition of the corresponding minimization problems. Besides the main subject of parallelization by DD methods, we also investigate the linear model problem of motion estimation itself, namely by proposing and empirically studying a new variational approach for the estimation of turbulent flows in the area of fluid mechanics

    Parallel Overlapping Schwarz Preconditioners for Incompressible Fluid Flow and Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems

    Efficient methods for the approximation of solutions to incompressible fluid flow and fluid-structure interaction problems are presented. In particular, partial differential equations (PDEs) are derived from basic conservation principles. First, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for Newtonian fluids are introduced. This is followed by a consideration of solid mechanical problems. Both, the fluid equations and the equation for solid problems are then coupled and a fluid-structure interaction problem is constructed. Furthermore, a discretization by the finite element method for weak formulations of these problems is described. This spatial discretization of variables is followed by a discretization of the remaining time-dependent parts. An implementation of the discretizations and problems in a parallel C++ software environment is described. This implementation is based on the software package Trilinos. The parallel execution of a program is the essence of High Performance Computing (HPC). HPC clusters are, in general, machines with several tens of thousands of cores. The fastest current machine, as of the TOP500 list from November 2019, has over 2.4 million cores, while the largest machine possesses over 10 million cores. To achieve sufficient accuracy of the approximate solutions, a fine spatial discretization must be used. In particular, fine spatial discretizations lead to systems with large sparse matrices that have to be solved. Iterative preconditioned Krylov methods are among the most widely used and efficient solution strategies for these systems. Robust and efficient preconditioners which possess good scaling behavior for a parallel execution on several thousand cores are the main component. In this thesis, the focus is on parallel algebraic preconditioners for fluid and fluid-structure interaction problems. Therefore, monolithic overlapping Schwarz preconditioners for saddle point problems of Stokes and Navier-Stokes problems are presented. Monolithic preconditioners for incompressible fluid flow problems can significantly improve the convergence speed compared to preconditioners based on block factorizations. In order to obtain numerically scalable algorithms, coarse spaces obtained from the Generalized Dryja-Smith-Widlund (GDSW) and the Reduced dimension GDSW (RGDSW) approach are used. These coarse spaces can be constructed in an essentially algebraic way. Numerical results of the parallel implementation are presented for various incompressible fluid flow problems. Good scalability for up to 11 979 MPI ranks, which corresponds to the largest problem configuration fitting on the employed supercomputer, were achieved. A comparison of these monolithic approaches and commonly used block preconditioners with respect to time-to-solution is made. Similarly, the most efficient construction of two-level overlapping Schwarz preconditioners with GDSW and RGDSW coarse spaces for solid problems is reported. These techniques are then combined to efficiently solve fully coupled monolithic fluid-strucuture interaction problems
