    Enhancing service quality and reliability in intelligent traffic system

    Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) can manage on-road traffic efficiently based on real-time traffic conditions, reduce delay at the intersections, and maintain the safety of the road users. However, emergency vehicles still struggle to meet their targeted response time, and an ITS is vulnerable to various types of attacks, including cyberattacks. To address these issues, in this dissertation, we introduce three techniques that enhance the service quality and reliability of an ITS. First, an innovative Emergency Vehicle Priority System (EVPS) is presented to assist an Emergency Vehicle (EV) in attending the incident place faster. Our proposed EVPS determines the proper priority codes of EV based on the type of incidents. After priority code generation, EVPS selects the number of traffic signals needed to be turned green considering the impact on other vehicles gathered in the relevant adjacent cells. Second, for improving reliability, an Intrusion Detection System for traffic signals is proposed for the first time, which leverages traffic and signal characteristics such as the flow rate, vehicle speed, and signal phase time. Shannon’s entropy is used to calculate the uncertainty associated with the likelihood of particular evidence and Dempster-Shafer (DS) decision theory is used to fuse the evidential information. Finally, to improve the reliability of a future ITS, we introduce a model that assesses the trust level of four major On-Board Units (OBU) of a self-driving car along with Global Positioning System (GPS) data and safety messages. Both subjective logic (DS theory) and CertainLogic are used to develop the theoretical underpinning for estimating the trust value of a self-driving car by fusing the trust value of four OBU components, GPS data and safety messages. For evaluation and validation purposes, a popular and widely used traffic simulation package, namely Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO), is used to develop the simulation platform using a real map of Melbourne CBD. The relevant historical real data taken from the VicRoads website were used to inject the traffic flow and density in the simulation model. We evaluated the performance of our proposed techniques considering different traffic and signal characteristics such as occupancy rate, flow rate, phase time, and vehicle speed under many realistic scenarios.     Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors

    Building around innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, intelligent transport systems (ITS) are being widely adopted worldwide to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. They enable users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and smarter decisions on the use of transport networks. Current ITSs are complex systems, made up of several components/sub-systems characterized by time-dependent interactions among themselves. Some examples of these transportation-related complex systems include: road traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, and many others that are emerging from niche areas. The efficient operation of these complex systems requires: i) efficient solutions to the issues of sensors/actuators used to capture and control the physical parameters of these systems, as well as the quality of data collected from these systems; ii) tackling complexities using simulations and analytical modelling techniques; and iii) applying optimization techniques to improve the performance of these systems.     Spatio-temporal traffic anomaly detection for urban networks

    Urban road networks are often affected by disruptions such as accidents and roadworks, giving rise to congestion and delays, which can, in turn, create a wide range of negative impacts to the economy, environment, safety and security. Accurate detection of the onset of traffic anomalies, specifically Recurrent Congestion (RC) and Nonrecurrent Congestion (NRC) in the traffic networks, is an important ITS function to facilitate proactive intervention measures to reduce the level of severity of congestion. A substantial body of literature is dedicated to models with varying levels of complexity that attempt to identify such anomalies. Given the complexity of the problem, however, very less effort is dedicated to the development of methods that attempt to detect traffic anomalies using spatio-temporal features. Driven both by the recent advances in deep learning techniques and the development of Traffic Incident Management Systems (TIMS), the aim of this research is to develop novel traffic anomaly detection models that can incorporate both spatial and temporal traffic information to detect traffic anomalies at a network level. This thesis first reviews the state of the art in traffic anomaly detection techniques, including the existing methods and emerging machine learning and deep learning methods, before identifying the gaps in the current understanding of traffic anomaly and its detection. One of the problems in terms of adapting the deep learning models to traffic anomaly detection is the translation of time series traffic data from multiple locations to the format necessary for the deep learning model to learn the spatial and temporal features effectively. To address this challenging problem and build a systematic traffic anomaly detection method at a network level, this thesis proposes a methodological framework consisting of (a) the translation layer (which is designed to translate the time series traffic data from multiple locations over the road network into a desired format with spatial and temporal features), (b) detection methods and (c) localisation. This methodological framework is subsequently tested for early RC detection and NRC detection. Three translation layers including connectivity matrix, geographical grid translation and spatial temporal translation are presented and evaluated for both RC and NRC detection. The early RC detection approach is a deep learning based method that combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The NRC detection, on the other hand, involves only the application of the CNN. The performance of the proposed approach is compared against other conventional congestion detection methods, using a comprehensive evaluation framework that includes metrics such as detection rates and false positive rates, and the sensitivity analysis of time windows as well as prediction horizons. The conventional congestion detection methods used for the comparison include Multilayer Perceptron, Random Forest and Gradient Boost Classifier, all of which are commonly used in the literature. Real-world traffic data from the City of Bath are used for the comparative analysis of RC, while traffic data in conjunction with incident data extracted from Central London are used for NRC detection. The results show that while the connectivity matrix may be capable of extracting features of a small network, the increased sparsity in the matrix in a large network reduces its effectiveness in feature learning compared to geographical grid translation. The results also indicate that the proposed deep learning method demonstrates superior detection accuracy compared to alternative methods and that it can detect recurrent congestion as early as one hour ahead with acceptable accuracy. The proposed method is capable of being implemented within a real-world ITS system making use of traffic sensor data, thereby providing a practically useful tool for road network managers to manage traffic proactively. In addition, the results demonstrate that a deep learning-based approach may improve the accuracy of incident detection and locate traffic anomalies precisely, especially in a large urban network. Finally, the framework is further tested for robustness in terms of network topology, sensor faults and missing data. The robustness analysis demonstrates that the proposed traffic anomaly detection approaches are transferable to different sizes of road networks, and that they are robust in the presence of sensor faults and missing data.Open Acces

    Large-Scale Traffic Flow Prediction Using Deep Learning in the Context of Smart Mobility

    Designing and developing a new generation of cities around the world (termed as smart cities) is fast becoming one of the ultimate solutions to overcome cities' problems such as population growth, pollution, energy crisis, and pressure demand on existing transportation infrastructure. One of the major aspects of a smart city is smart mobility. Smart mobility aims at improving transportation systems in several aspects: city logistics, info-mobility, and people-mobility. The emergence of the Internet of Car (IoC) phenomenon alongside with the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) opens some opportunities in improving the tra c management systems and assisting the travelers and authorities in their decision-making process. However, this has given rise to the generation of huge amount of data originated from human-device and device-device interaction. This is an opportunity and a challenge, and smart mobility will not meet its full potential unless valuable insights are extracted from these big data. Although the smart city environment and IoC allow for the generation and exchange of large amounts of data, there have not been yet well de ned and mature approaches for mining this wealth of information to bene t the drivers and traffic authorities. The main reason is most likely related to fundamental challenges in dealing with big data of various types and uncertain frequency coming from diverse sources. Mainly, the issues of types of data and uncertainty analysis in the predictions are indicated as the most challenging areas of study that have not been tackled yet. Important issues such as the nature of the data, i.e., stationary or non-stationary, and the prediction tasks, i.e., short-term or long-term, should also be taken into consideration. Based on this observation, a data-driven traffic flow prediction framework within the context of big data environment is proposed in this thesis. The main goal of this framework is to enhance the quality of traffic flow predictions, which can be used to assist travelers and traffic authorities in the decision-making process (whether for travel or management purposes). The proposed framework is focused around four main aspects that tackle major data-driven traffic flow prediction problems: the fusion of hard data for traffic flow prediction; the fusion of soft data for traffic flow prediction; prediction of non-stationary traffic flow; and prediction of multi-step traffic flow. All these aspects are investigated and formulated as computational based tools/algorithms/approaches adequately tailored to the nature of the data at hand. The first tool tackles the inherent big data problems and deals with the uncertainty in the prediction. It relies on the ability of deep learning approaches in handling huge amounts of data generated by a large-scale and complex transportation system with limited prior knowledge. Furthermore, motivated by the close correlation between road traffic and weather conditions, a novel deep-learning-based approach that predicts traffic flow by fusing the traffic history and weather data is proposed. The second tool fuses the streams of data (hard data) and event-based data (soft data) using Dempster Shafer Evidence Theory (DSET). One of the main features of the DSET is its ability to capture uncertainties in probabilities. Subsequently, an extension of DSET, namely Dempsters conditional rules for updating belief, is used to fuse traffic prediction beliefs coming from streams of data and event-based data sources. The third tool consists of a method to detect non-stationarities in the traffic flow and an algorithm to perform online adaptations of the tra c prediction model. The proposed detection approach is developed by monitoring the evolution of the spectral contents of the traffic flow. Furthermore, the approach is specfi cally developed to work in conjunction with state-of-the-art machine learning methods such as Deep Neural Network (DNN). By combining the power of frequency domain features and the known generalization capability and scalability of DNN in handling real-world data, it is expected that high prediction performances can be achieved. The last tool is developed to improve multi-step traffic flow prediction in the recursive and multi-output settings. In the recursive setting, an algorithm that augments the information about the current time-step is proposed. This algorithm is called Conditional Data as Demonstrator (C-DaD) and is an extension of an algorithm called Data as Demonstrator (DaD). Furthermore, in the multi-output setting, a novel approach of generating new history-future pairs of data that are aggregated with the original training data using Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (C-GAN) is developed. To demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approaches, a series of experiments using arti cial and real-world data are conducted.     An Approach to Guide Users Towards Less Revealing Internet Browsers

    When browsing the Internet, HTTP headers enable both clients and servers send extra data in their requests or responses such as the User-Agent string. This string contains information related to the sender’s device, browser, and operating system. Previous research has shown that there are numerous privacy and security risks result from exposing sensitive information in the User-Agent string. For example, it enables device and browser fingerprinting and user tracking and identification. Our large analysis of thousands of User-Agent strings shows that browsers differ tremendously in the amount of information they include in their User-Agent strings. As such, our work aims at guiding users towards using less exposing browsers. In doing so, we propose to assign an exposure score to browsers based on the information they expose and vulnerability records. Thus, our contribution in this work is as follows: first, provide a full implementation that is ready to be deployed and used by users. Second, conduct a user study to identify the effectiveness and limitations of our proposed approach. Our implementation is based on using more than 52 thousand unique browsers. Our performance and validation analysis show that our solution is accurate and efficient. The source code and data set are publicly available and the solution has been deployed
