Survey of Spectrum Sharing for Inter-Technology Coexistence
Increasing capacity demands in emerging wireless technologies are expected to
be met by network densification and spectrum bands open to multiple
technologies. These will, in turn, increase the level of interference and also
result in more complex inter-technology interactions, which will need to be
managed through spectrum sharing mechanisms. Consequently, novel spectrum
sharing mechanisms should be designed to allow spectrum access for multiple
technologies, while efficiently utilizing the spectrum resources overall.
Importantly, it is not trivial to design such efficient mechanisms, not only
due to technical aspects, but also due to regulatory and business model
constraints. In this survey we address spectrum sharing mechanisms for wireless
inter-technology coexistence by means of a technology circle that incorporates
in a unified, system-level view the technical and non-technical aspects. We
thus systematically explore the spectrum sharing design space consisting of
parameters at different layers. Using this framework, we present a literature
review on inter-technology coexistence with a focus on wireless technologies
with equal spectrum access rights, i.e. (i) primary/primary, (ii)
secondary/secondary, and (iii) technologies operating in a spectrum commons.
Moreover, we reflect on our literature review to identify possible spectrum
sharing design solutions and performance evaluation approaches useful for
future coexistence cases. Finally, we discuss spectrum sharing design
challenges and suggest future research directions
Analysis Framework for Opportunistic Spectrum OFDMA and its Application to the IEEE 802.22 Standard
We present an analytical model that enables throughput evaluation of
Opportunistic Spectrum Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OS-OFDMA)
networks. The core feature of the model, based on a discrete time Markov chain,
is the consideration of different channel and subchannel allocation strategies
under different Primary and Secondary user types, traffic and priority levels.
The analytical model also assesses the impact of different spectrum sensing
strategies on the throughput of OS-OFDMA network. The analysis applies to the
IEEE 802.22 standard, to evaluate the impact of two-stage spectrum sensing
strategy and varying temporal activity of wireless microphones on the IEEE
802.22 throughput. Our study suggests that OS-OFDMA with subchannel notching
and channel bonding could provide almost ten times higher throughput compared
with the design without those options, when the activity and density of
wireless microphones is very high. Furthermore, we confirm that OS-OFDMA
implementation without subchannel notching, used in the IEEE 802.22, is able to
support real-time and non-real-time quality of service classes, provided that
wireless microphones temporal activity is moderate (with approximately one
wireless microphone per 3,000 inhabitants with light urban population density
and short duty cycles). Finally, two-stage spectrum sensing option improves
OS-OFDMA throughput, provided that the length of spectrum sensing at every
stage is optimized using our model
Large-Scale Distributed Internet-based Discovery Mechanism for Dynamic Spectrum Allocation
Scarcity of frequencies and the demand for more bandwidth is likely to
increase the need for devices that utilize the available frequencies more
efficiently. Radios must be able to dynamically find other users of the
frequency bands and adapt so that they are not interfered, even if they use
different radio protocols. As transmitters far away may cause as much
interference as a transmitter located nearby, this mechanism can not be based
on location alone. Central databases can be used for this purpose, but require
expensive infrastructure and planning to scale. In this paper, we propose a
decentralized protocol and architecture for discovering radio devices over the
Internet. The protocol has low resource requirements, making it suitable for
implementation on limited platforms. We evaluate the protocol through
simulation in network topologies with up to 2.3 million nodes, including
topologies generated from population patterns in Norway. The protocol has also

Coordinated Dynamic Spectrum Management of LTE-U and Wi-Fi Networks
This paper investigates the co-existence of Wi-Fi and LTE in emerging
unlicensed frequency bands which are intended to accommodate multiple radio
access technologies. Wi-Fi and LTE are the two most prominent access
technologies being deployed today, motivating further study of the inter-system
interference arising in such shared spectrum scenarios as well as possible
techniques for enabling improved co-existence. An analytical model for
evaluating the baseline performance of co-existing Wi-Fi and LTE is developed
and used to obtain baseline performance measures. The results show that both
Wi-Fi and LTE networks cause significant interference to each other and that
the degradation is dependent on a number of factors such as power levels and
physical topology. The model-based results are partially validated via
experimental evaluations using USRP based SDR platforms on the ORBIT testbed.
Further, inter-network coordination with logically centralized radio resource
management across Wi-Fi and LTE systems is proposed as a possible solution for
improved co-existence. Numerical results are presented showing significant
gains in both Wi-Fi and LTE performance with the proposed inter-network

Spherical deconvolution of multichannel diffusion MRI data with non-Gaussian noise models and spatial regularization
Spherical deconvolution (SD) methods are widely used to estimate the
intra-voxel white-matter fiber orientations from diffusion MRI data. However,
while some of these methods assume a zero-mean Gaussian distribution for the
underlying noise, its real distribution is known to be non-Gaussian and to
depend on the methodology used to combine multichannel signals. Indeed, the two
prevailing methods for multichannel signal combination lead to Rician and
noncentral Chi noise distributions. Here we develop a Robust and Unbiased
Model-BAsed Spherical Deconvolution (RUMBA-SD) technique, intended to deal with
realistic MRI noise, based on a Richardson-Lucy (RL) algorithm adapted to
Rician and noncentral Chi likelihood models. To quantify the benefits of using
proper noise models, RUMBA-SD was compared with dRL-SD, a well-established
method based on the RL algorithm for Gaussian noise. Another aim of the study
was to quantify the impact of including a total variation (TV) spatial
regularization term in the estimation framework. To do this, we developed TV
spatially-regularized versions of both RUMBA-SD and dRL-SD algorithms. The
evaluation was performed by comparing various quality metrics on 132
three-dimensional synthetic phantoms involving different inter-fiber angles and
volume fractions, which were contaminated with noise mimicking patterns
generated by data processing in multichannel scanners. The results demonstrate
that the inclusion of proper likelihood models leads to an increased ability to
resolve fiber crossings with smaller inter-fiber angles and to better detect
non-dominant fibers. The inclusion of TV regularization dramatically improved
the resolution power of both techniques. The above findings were also verified
in brain data
Implementation and Performance Evaluation of Distributed Autonomous Multi-Hop Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications over TV White Space
This paper presents design and experimental evaluation of a distributed autonomous multi-hop vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system over TV white space performed in Japan. We propose the two-layer control channel model, which consists of the Zone Aware Control Channel (ZACC) and the Swarm Aware Control Channel (SACC), to establish the multi-hop network. Several vehicles construct a swarm using location information shared through ZACC, and share route and channel information, and available white space information through SACC. To evaluate the system we carried out field experiments with swarm made of three vehicles in a convoy. The vehicles observe channel occupancy via energy detection and agree on the control and the data channels autonomously. For coarse synchronization of quiet periods for sensing we use GPS driven oscillators, and introduce a time margin to accommodate for remaining drift. When a primary user is detected in any of the borrowed channels, the vehicles switch to a vacant channel without disrupting the ongoing multi-hop communication. We present the experimental results in terms of the time to establish control channel, channel switching time, delivery ratio of control message exchange, and throughput. As a result, we showed that our implementation can provide efficient and stable multi-hop V2V communication by using dynamic spectrum access (DSA) techniques
Design and Experimental Evaluation of a Database-Assisted V2V Communications System Over TV White Space
Automakers are increasingly employing wireless communications technologies into vehicles, which are expected to be one of the primary tools to improve traffic flow and traffic safety. Anticipating a significant increase in the accompanying spectrum and capacity requirements, in this paper, we speculate about using dynamic spectrum access in general, and TV white space in particular for vehicular communications. To this end, we describe the concept, design, general architecture and operation principles of a vehicle-to-vehicle communications system over TV white space. This system makes dual use of a geolocation database and spectrum sensing to understand spectrum vacancies. In this architecture, whenever a database query result is available, that information is prioritized over sensing results and when the database access is disrupted, vehicles rely on the spectrum sensing results. After describing the general concepts, we numerically analyze and evaluate the benefits of using proxy vehicles for geolocation database access. Finally, we present the middleware-centric implementation and field test results of a multi-hop vehicle-to-vehicle communications system over the licensed TV-band. We present results regarding multi-hop throughput, delay, jitter, channel switching and database access latencies.
