    FAST : a fault detection and identification software tool

    The aim of this work is to improve the reliability and safety of complex critical control systems by contributing to the systematic application of fault diagnosis. In order to ease the utilization of fault detection and isolation (FDI) tools in the industry, a systematic approach is required to allow the process engineers to analyze a system from this perspective. In this way, it should be possible to analyze this system to find if it provides the required fault diagnosis and redundancy according to the process criticality. In addition, it should be possible to evaluate what-if scenarios by slightly modifying the process (f.i. adding sensors or changing their placement) and evaluating the impact in terms of the fault diagnosis and redundancy possibilities. Hence, this work proposes an approach to analyze a process from the FDI perspective and for this purpose provides the tool FAST which covers from the analysis and design phase until the final FDI supervisor implementation in a real process. To synthesize the process information, a very simple format has been defined based on XML. This format provides the needed information to systematically perform the Structural Analysis of that process. Any process can be analyzed, the only restriction is that the models of the process components need to be available in the FAST tool. The processes are described in FAST in terms of process variables, components and relations and the tool performs the structural analysis of the process obtaining: (i) the structural matrix, (ii) the perfect matching, (iii) the analytical redundancy relations (if any) and (iv) the fault signature matrix. To aid in the analysis process, FAST can operate stand alone in simulation mode allowing the process engineer to evaluate the faults, its detectability and implement changes in the process components and topology to improve the diagnosis and redundancy capabilities. On the other hand, FAST can operate on-line connected to the process plant through an OPC interface. The OPC interface enables the possibility to connect to almost any process which features a SCADA system for supervisory control. When running in on-line mode, the process is monitored by a software agent known as the Supervisor Agent. FAST has also the capability of implementing distributed FDI using its multi-agent architecture. The tool is able to partition complex industrial processes into subsystems, identify which process variables need to be shared by each subsystem and instantiate a Supervision Agent for each of the partitioned subsystems. The Supervision Agents once instantiated will start diagnosing their local components and handle the requests to provide the variable values which FAST has identified as shared with other agents to support the distributed FDI process.Per tal de facilitar la utilització d'eines per la detecció i identificació de fallades (FDI) en la indústria, es requereix un enfocament sistemàtic per permetre als enginyers de processos analitzar un sistema des d'aquesta perspectiva. D'aquesta forma, hauria de ser possible analitzar aquest sistema per determinar si proporciona el diagnosi de fallades i la redundància d'acord amb la seva criticitat. A més, hauria de ser possible avaluar escenaris de casos modificant lleugerament el procés (per exemple afegint sensors o canviant la seva localització) i avaluant l'impacte en quant a les possibilitats de diagnosi de fallades i redundància. Per tant, aquest projecte proposa un enfocament per analitzar un procés des de la perspectiva FDI i per tal d'implementar-ho proporciona l'eina FAST la qual cobreix des de la fase d'anàlisi i disseny fins a la implementació final d'un supervisor FDI en un procés real. Per sintetitzar la informació del procés s'ha definit un format simple basat en XML. Aquest format proporciona la informació necessària per realitzar de forma sistemàtica l'Anàlisi Estructural del procés. Qualsevol procés pot ser analitzat, només hi ha la restricció de que els models dels components han d'estar disponibles en l'eina FAST. Els processos es descriuen en termes de variables de procés, components i relacions i l'eina realitza l'anàlisi estructural obtenint: (i) la matriu estructural, (ii) el Perfect Matching, (iii) les relacions de redundància analítica, si n'hi ha, i (iv) la matriu signatura de fallades. Per ajudar durant el procés d'anàlisi, FAST pot operar aïlladament en mode de simulació permetent a l'enginyer de procés avaluar fallades, la seva detectabilitat i implementar canvis en els components del procés i la topologia per tal de millorar les capacitats de diagnosi i redundància. Per altra banda, FAST pot operar en línia connectat al procés de la planta per mitjà d'una interfície OPC. La interfície OPC permet la possibilitat de connectar gairebé a qualsevol procés que inclogui un sistema SCADA per la seva supervisió. Quan funciona en mode en línia, el procés està monitoritzat per un agent software anomenat l'Agent Supervisor. Addicionalment, FAST té la capacitat d'implementar FDI de forma distribuïda utilitzant la seva arquitectura multi-agent. L'eina permet dividir sistemes industrials complexes en subsistemes, identificar quines variables de procés han de ser compartides per cada subsistema i generar una instància d'Agent Supervisor per cadascun dels subsistemes identificats. Els Agents Supervisor un cop activats, començaran diagnosticant els components locals i despatxant les peticions de valors per les variables que FAST ha identificat com compartides amb altres agents, per tal d'implementar el procés FDI de forma distribuïda.Postprint (published version

    Social Network Intelligence Analysis to Combat Street Gang Violence

    In this paper we introduce the Organization, Relationship, and Contact Analyzer (ORCA) that is designed to aide intelligence analysis for law enforcement operations against violent street gangs. ORCA is designed to address several police analytical needs concerning street gangs using new techniques in social network analysis. Specifically, it can determine "degree of membership" for individuals who do not admit to membership in a street gang, quickly identify sets of influential individuals (under the tipping model), and identify criminal ecosystems by decomposing gangs into sub-groups. We describe this software and the design decisions considered in building an intelligence analysis tool created specifically for countering violent street gangs as well as provide results based on conducting analysis on real-world police data provided by a major American metropolitan police department who is partnering with us and currently deploying this system for real-world use

    A study of the use of natural language processing for conversational agents

    Language is a mark of humanity and conscience, with the conversation (or dialogue) as one of the most fundamental manners of communication that we learn as children. Therefore one way to make a computer more attractive for interaction with users is through the use of natural language. Among the systems with some degree of language capabilities developed, the Eliza chatterbot is probably the first with a focus on dialogue. In order to make the interaction more interesting and useful to the user there are other approaches besides chatterbots, like conversational agents. These agents generally have, to some degree, properties like: a body (with cognitive states, including beliefs, desires and intentions or objectives); an interactive incorporation in the real or virtual world (including perception of events, communication, ability to manipulate the world and communicate with others); and behavior similar to a human (including affective abilities). This type of agents has been called by several terms, including animated agents or embedded conversational agents (ECA). A dialogue system has six basic components. (1) The speech recognition component is responsible for translating the user’s speech into text. (2) The Natural Language Understanding component produces a semantic representation suitable for dialogues, usually using grammars and ontologies. (3) The Task Manager chooses the concepts to be expressed to the user. (4) The Natural Language Generation component defines how to express these concepts in words. (5) The dialog manager controls the structure of the dialogue. (6) The synthesizer is responsible for translating the agents answer into speech. However, there is no consensus about the necessary resources for developing conversational agents and the difficulties involved (especially in resource-poor languages). This work focuses on the influence of natural language components (dialogue understander and manager) and analyses, in particular the use of parsing systems as part of developing conversational agents with more flexible language capabilities. This work analyses what kind of parsing resources contributes to conversational agents and discusses how to develop them targeting Portuguese, which is a resource-poor language. To do so we analyze approaches to the understanding of natural language, and identify parsing approaches that offer good performance, based on which we develop a prototype to evaluate the impact of using a parser in a conversational agent.linguagem é uma marca da humanidade e da consciência, sendo a conversação (ou diálogo) uma das maneiras de comunicacão mais fundamentais que aprendemos quando crianças. Por isso uma forma de fazer um computador mais atrativo para interação com usuários é usando linguagem natural. Dos sistemas com algum grau de capacidade de linguagem desenvolvidos, o chatterbot Eliza é, provavelmente, o primeiro sistema com foco em diálogo. Com o objetivo de tornar a interação mais interessante e útil para o usuário há outras aplicações alem de chatterbots, como agentes conversacionais. Estes agentes geralmente possuem, em algum grau, propriedades como: corpo (com estados cognitivos, incluindo crenças, desejos e intenções ou objetivos); incorporação interativa no mundo real ou virtual (incluindo percepções de eventos, comunicação, habilidade de manipular o mundo e comunicar com outros agentes); e comportamento similar ao humano (incluindo habilidades afetivas). Este tipo de agente tem sido chamado de diversos nomes como agentes animados ou agentes conversacionais incorporados. Um sistema de diálogo possui seis componentes básicos. (1) O componente de reconhecimento de fala que é responsável por traduzir a fala do usuário em texto. (2) O componente de entendimento de linguagem natural que produz uma representação semântica adequada para diálogos, normalmente utilizando gramáticas e ontologias. (3) O gerenciador de tarefa que escolhe os conceitos a serem expressos ao usuário. (4) O componente de geração de linguagem natural que define como expressar estes conceitos em palavras. (5) O gerenciador de diálogo controla a estrutura do diálogo. (6) O sintetizador de voz é responsável por traduzir a resposta do agente em fala. No entanto, não há consenso sobre os recursos necessários para desenvolver agentes conversacionais e a dificuldade envolvida nisso (especialmente em línguas com poucos recursos disponíveis). Este trabalho foca na influência dos componentes de linguagem natural (entendimento e gerência de diálogo) e analisa em especial o uso de sistemas de análise sintática (parser) como parte do desenvolvimento de agentes conversacionais com habilidades de linguagem mais flexível. Este trabalho analisa quais os recursos do analisador sintático contribuem para agentes conversacionais e aborda como os desenvolver, tendo como língua alvo o português (uma língua com poucos recursos disponíveis). Para isto, analisamos as abordagens de entendimento de linguagem natural e identificamos as abordagens de análise sintática que oferecem um bom desempenho.     [EN] Human social relationships imply conforming to the norms, behaviors and cultural values of the society, but also socialization of emotions, to learn how to interpret and show them. In multiagent systems, much progress has been made in the analysis and interpretation of both emotions and norms. Nonetheless, the relationship between emotions and norms has hardly been considered and most normative agents do not consider emotions, or vice-versa. In this article, we provide an overview of relevant aspects within the area of normative agents and emotional agents. First we focus on the concept of norm, the different types of norms, its life cycle and a review of multiagent normative systems. Secondly, we present the most relevant theories of emotions, the life cycle of an agent¿s emotions, and how emotions have been included through computational models in multiagent systems. Next, we present an analysis of proposals that integrate emotions and norms in multiagent systems. From this analysis, four relationships are detected between norms and emotions, which we analyze in detail and discuss how these relationships have been tackled in the reviewed proposals.
