    Extending the Modern Synthesis: The evolution of ecosystems

    The Modern Evolutionary Synthesis formalizes the role of variation, heredity, differential reproduction and mutation in population genetics. Here we explore a mathematical structure, based on the asymptotic limit theorems of information theory, that instantiates the punctuated dynamic relations of organisms and their embedding environments. The mathematical overhead is considerable, and we conclude that the model must itself be extended even further to allow the possibility of the transfer of heritage information between different classes of organisms. In essence, we provide something of a formal roadmap for the modernization of the Modern Synthesis

    Terminology mining in social media

    The highly variable and dynamic word usage in social media presents serious challenges for both research and those commercial applications that are geared towards blogs or other user-generated non-editorial texts. This paper discusses and exemplifies a terminology mining approach for dealing with the productive character of the textual environment in social media. We explore the challenges of practically acquiring new terminology, and of modeling similarity and relatedness of terms from observing realistic amounts of data. We also discuss semantic evolution and density, and investigate novel measures for characterizing the preconditions for terminology mining

    Model-driven engineering approach to design and implementation of robot control system

    In this paper we apply a model-driven engineering approach to designing domain-specific solutions for robot control system development. We present a case study of the complete process, including identification of the domain meta-model, graphical notation definition and source code generation for subsumption architecture -- a well-known example of robot control architecture. Our goal is to show that both the definition of the robot-control architecture and its supporting tools fits well into the typical workflow of model-driven engineering development.Comment: Presented at DSLRob 2011 (arXiv:cs/1212.3308

    Lost in translation: Toward a formal model of multilevel, multiscale medicine

    For a broad spectrum of low level cognitive regulatory and other biological phenomena, isolation from signal crosstalk between them requires more metabolic free energy than permitting correlation. This allows an evolutionary exaptation leading to dynamic global broadcasts of interacting physiological processes at multiple scales. The argument is similar to the well-studied exaptation of noise to trigger stochastic resonance amplification in physiological subsystems. Not only is the living state characterized by cognition at every scale and level of organization, but by multiple, shifting, tunable, cooperative larger scale broadcasts that link selected subsets of functional modules to address problems. This multilevel dynamical viewpoint has implications for initiatives in translational medicine that have followed the implosive collapse of pharmaceutical industry 'magic bullet' research. In short, failure to respond to the inherently multilevel, multiscale nature of human pathophysiology will doom translational medicine to a similar implosion

    Language Identification Using Visual Features

    Automatic visual language identification (VLID) is the technology of using information derived from the visual appearance and movement of the speech articulators to iden- tify the language being spoken, without the use of any audio information. This technique for language identification (LID) is useful in situations in which conventional audio processing is ineffective (very noisy environments), or impossible (no audio signal is available). Research in this field is also beneficial in the related field of automatic lip-reading. This paper introduces several methods for visual language identification (VLID). They are based upon audio LID techniques, which exploit language phonology and phonotactics to discriminate languages. We show that VLID is possible in a speaker-dependent mode by discrimi- nating different languages spoken by an individual, and we then extend the technique to speaker-independent operation, taking pains to ensure that discrimination is not due to artefacts, either visual (e.g. skin-tone) or audio (e.g. rate of speaking). Although the low accuracy of visual speech recognition currently limits the performance of VLID, we can obtain an error-rate of < 10% in discriminating between Arabic and English on 19 speakers and using about 30s of visual speech

    Unnatural Selection: A new formal approach to punctuated equilibrium in economic systems

    Generalized Darwinian evolutionary theory has emerged as central to the description of economic process (e.g., Aldrich et. al., 2008). Here we demonstrate that, just as Darwinian principles provide necessary, but not sufficient, conditions for understanding the dynamics of social entities, in a similar manner the asymptotic limit theorems of information theory provide another set of necessary conditions that constrain the evolution of socioeconomic process. These latter constraints can, however, easily be formulated as a statistics-like analytic toolbox for the study of empirical data that is consistent with a generalized Darwinism, and this is no small thing

    Feature extraction based on bio-inspired model for robust emotion recognition

    Emotional state identification is an important issue to achieve more natural speech interactive systems. Ideally, these systems should also be able to work in real environments in which generally exist some kind of noise. Several bio-inspired representations have been applied to artificial systems for speech processing under noise conditions. In this work, an auditory signal representation is used to obtain a novel bio-inspired set of features for emotional speech signals. These characteristics, together with other spectral and prosodic features, are used for emotion recognition under noise conditions. Neural models were trained as classifiers and results were compared to the well-known mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. Results show that using the proposed representations, it is possible to significantly improve the robustness of an emotion recognition system.
