A Framework for Developing Real-Time OLAP algorithm using Multi-core processing and GPU: Heterogeneous Computing
The overwhelmingly increasing amount of stored data has spurred researchers
seeking different methods in order to optimally take advantage of it which
mostly have faced a response time problem as a result of this enormous size of
data. Most of solutions have suggested materialization as a favourite solution.
However, such a solution cannot attain Real- Time answers anyhow. In this paper
we propose a framework illustrating the barriers and suggested solutions in the
way of achieving Real-Time OLAP answers that are significantly used in decision
support systems and data warehouses
Using Fuzzy Linguistic Representations to Provide Explanatory Semantics for Data Warehouses
A data warehouse integrates large amounts of extracted and summarized data from multiple sources for direct querying and analysis. While it provides decision makers with easy access to such historical and aggregate data, the real meaning of the data has been ignored. For example, "whether a total sales amount 1,000 items indicates a good or bad sales performance" is still unclear. From the decision makers' point of view, the semantics rather than raw numbers which convey the meaning of the data is very important. In this paper, we explore the use of fuzzy technology to provide this semantics for the summarizations and aggregates developed in data warehousing systems. A three layered data warehouse semantic model, consisting of quantitative (numerical) summarization, qualitative (categorical) summarization, and quantifier summarization, is proposed for capturing and explicating the semantics of warehoused data. Based on the model, several algebraic operators are defined. We also extend the SQL language to allow for flexible queries against such enhanced data warehouses

Polyhedral Geometry in OSCAR
OSCAR is an innovative new computer algebra system which combines and extends
the power of its four cornerstone systems - GAP (group theory), Singular
(algebra and algebraic geometry), Polymake (polyhedral geometry), and Antic
(number theory). Here, we give an introduction to polyhedral geometry
computations in OSCAR, as a chapter of the upcoming OSCAR book. In particular,
we define polytopes, polyhedra, and polyhedral fans, and we give a brief
overview about computing convex hulls and solving linear programs. Three
detailed case studies are concerned with face numbers of random polytopes,
constructions and properties of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, and secondary
polytopes.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
A distributed tree data structure for real-time OLAP on cloud architectures
In contrast to queries for on-line transaction processing (OLTP) systems that typically access only a small portion of a database, OLAP queries may need to aggregate large portions of a database which often leads to performance issues. In this paper we introduce CR-OLAP, a Cloud based Real-time OLAP system based on a new distributed index structure for OLAP, the distributed PDCR tree, that utilizes a cloud infrastructure consisting of (m + 1) multi-core processors. With increasing database size, CR-OLAP dynamically increases m to maintain performance. Our distributed PDCR tree data structure supports multiple dimension hierarchies and efficient query processing on the elaborate dimension hierarchies which are so central to OLAP systems. It is particularly efficient for complex OLAP queries that need to aggregate large portions of the data warehouse, such as 'report the total sales in all stores located in California and New York during the months February-May of all years'. We evaluated CR-OLAP on the Amazon EC2 cloud, using the TPC-DS benchmark data set. The tests demonstrate that CR-OLAP scales well with increasing number of processors, even for complex queries. For example, on an Amazon EC2 cloud instance with eight processors, for a TPC-DS OLAP query stream on a data warehouse with 80 million tuples where every OLAP query aggregates more than 50% of the database, CR-OLAP achieved a query latency of 0.3 seconds which can be considered a real time response
Collaborative Filtering and Inference Rules for Context-Aware Learning Object Recommendation
Learning objects strive for reusability in e-Learning to reduce cost and allow personalization of content. We argue that learning objects require adapted Information Retrieval systems. In the spirit of the Semantic Web, we discuss the semantic description, discovery, and composition of learning objects using Web-based MP3 objects as examples. As part of our project, we tag learning objects with both objective and subjective metadata. We study the application of collaborative filtering as prototyped in the RACOFI (Rule-Applying Collaborative Filtering) Composer system, which consists of two libraries and their associated engines: a collaborative filtering system and an inference rule system. We are currently developing RACOFI to generate context-aware recommendation lists. Context is handled by multidimensional predictions produced from a database-driven scalable collaborative filtering algorithm. Rules are then applied to the predictions to customize the recommendations according to user profiles. The prototype is available at inDiscover.net
