    Moldable Items Packing Optimization

    This research has led to the development of two mathematical models to optimize the problem of packing a hybrid mix of rigid and moldable items within a three-dimensional volume. These two developed packing models characterize moldable items from two perspectives: (1) when limited discrete configurations represent the moldable items and (2) when all continuous configurations are available to the model. This optimization scheme is a component of a lean effort that attempts to reduce the lead-time associated with the implementation of dynamic product modifications that imply packing changes. To test the developed models, they are applied to the dynamic packing changes of Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MREs) at two different levels: packing MRE food items in the menu bags and packing menu bags in the boxes. These models optimize the packing volume utilization and provide information for MRE assemblers, enabling them to preplan for packing changes in a short lead-time. The optimization results are validated by running the solutions multiple times to access the consistency of solutions. Autodesk Inventor helps visualize the solutions to communicate the optimized packing solutions with the MRE assemblers for training purposes

    Integrating labor awareness to energy-efficient production scheduling under real-time electricity pricing : an empirical study

    With the penetration of smart grid into factories, energy-efficient production scheduling has emerged as a promising method for industrial demand response. It shifts flexible production loads to lower-priced periods to reduce energy cost for the same production task. However, the existing methods only focus on integrating energy awareness to conventional production scheduling models. They ignore the labor cost which is shift-based and follows an opposite trend of energy cost. For instance, the energy cost is lower during nights while the labor cost is higher. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for energy-efficient and labor-aware production scheduling at the unit process level. This integrated scheduling model is mathematically formulated. Besides the state-based energy model and genetic algorithm-based optimization, a continuous-time shift accumulation heuristic is proposed to synchronize power states and labor shifts. In a case study of a Belgian plastic bottle manufacturer, a set of empirical sensitivity analyses were performed to investigate the impact of energy and labor awareness, as well as the production-related factors that influence the economic performance of a schedule. Furthermore, the demonstration was performed in 9 large-scale test instances, which encompass the cases where energy cost is minor, moderate, and major compared to the joint energy and labor cost. The results have proven that the ignorance of labor in existing energy-efficient production scheduling studies increases the joint energy and labor cost, although the energy cost can be minimized. To achieve effective production cost reduction, energy and labor awareness are recommended to be jointly considered in production scheduling. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Genetic Algorithm With Random Crossover and Dynamic Mutation on Bin Packing Problem

    Bin Packing Problem (BPP) is a problem that aims to minimize the number of container usage by maximizing its contents. BPP can be applied to a case, such as maximizing the printing of a number of stickers on a sheet of paper of a certain size. Genetic Algorithm is one way to overcome BPP problems. Examples of the use of a combination of BPP and Genetic Algorithms are applied to printed paper in Digital Printing companies. Genetic Algorithms adopt evolutionary characteristics, such as selection, crossover and mutation. Repeatedly, Genetic Algorithms produce individuals who represent solutions. However, this algorithm often does not achieve maximum results because it is trapped in a local search and a case of premature convergence. The best results obtained are not comprehensive, so it is necessary to modify the parameters to improve this condition. Random Crossover and Dynamic Mutation were chosen to improve the performance of Genetic Algorithms. With this application, the performance of the Genetic Algorithm in the case of BPP can overcome premature convergence and maximize the allocation of printing and the use of paper. The test results show that an average of 99 stickers can be loaded on A3 + size paper and the best generation is obtained on average in the 21st generation and the remaining space is 3,500mm2

O estudo aplica um algoritmo evolucionário baseado no Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) adaptado às complexidades do problema para otimizar o processo de corte. A metodologia tem como objetivo melhorar a eficiência da utilização de material em tarefas de trabalho em madeira, empregando este algoritmo utilizando sobras de peças ao invés de uma nova placa. O relatório fornece dados empíricos e métricas de desempenho do algoritmo, demonstrando a sua eficácia na redução do desperdício e na otimização do trabalho na indústria. Esta abordagem melhora a eficiência operacional e sublinha os benefícios ambientais da utilização mais sustentável dos recursos de madeira, exemplificando o potencial da integração de técnicas computacionais em indústrias tradicionais para atingir este objetivo.This research investigates the application of computational methodologies in the woodworking industry, focusing on the Cutting Stock Problem (CSP) with two iterations: guillotinable and non-guillotinable iterations. The study applies an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) based on Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) customized to fit the intricacies of the problem to optimize the cutting process. The methodology aims to enhance material usage efficiency in woodworking tasks by employing this algorithm using leftover parts instead of a new board.     Container Loading Problems: A State-of-the-Art Review

    Container loading is a pivotal function for operating supply chains efficiently. Underperformance results in unnecessary costs (e.g. cost of additional containers to be shipped) and in an unsatisfactory customer service (e.g. violation of deadlines agreed to or set by clients). Thus, it is not surprising that container loading problems have been dealt with frequently in the operations research literature. It has been claimed though that the proposed approaches are of limited practical value since they do not pay enough attention to constraints encountered in practice.In this paper, a review of the state-of-the-art in the field of container loading will be given. We will identify factors which - from a practical point of view - need to be considered when dealing with container loading problems and we will analyze whether and how these factors are represented in methods for the solution of such problems. Modeling approaches, as well as exact and heuristic algorithms will be reviewed. This will allow for assessing the practical relevance of the research which has been carried out in the field. We will also mention several issues which have not been dealt with satisfactorily so far and give an outlook on future research opportunities

    Automating the packing heuristic design process with genetic programming

    The literature shows that one-, two-, and three-dimensional bin packing and knapsack packing are difficult problems in operational research. Many techniques, including exact, heuristic, and metaheuristic approaches, have been investigated to solve these problems and it is often not clear which method to use when presented with a new instance. This paper presents an approach which is motivated by the goal of building computer systems which can design heuristic methods. The overall aim is to explore the possibilities for automating the heuristic design process. We present a genetic programming system to automatically generate a good quality heuristic for each instance. It is not necessary to change the methodology depending on the problem type (one-, two-, or three-dimensional knapsack and bin packing problems), and it therefore has a level of generality unmatched by other systems in the literature. We carry out an extensive suite of experiments and compare with the best human designed heuristics in the literature. Note that our heuristic design methodology uses the same parameters for all the experiments. The contribution of this paper is to present a more general packing methodology than those currently available, and to show that, by using this methodology, it is possible for a computer system to design heuristics which are competitive with the human designed heuristics from the literature. This represents the first packing algorithm in the literature able to claim human competitive results in such a wide variety of packing domains
