Experimental evaluation of preprocessing algorithms for constraint satisfaction problems
This paper presents an experimental evaluation of two orthogonal schemes for preprocessing constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). The first of these schemes involves a class of local consistency techniques that includes directional arc consistency, directional path consistency, and adaptive consistency. The other scheme concerns the prearrangement of variables in a linear order to facilitate an efficient search. In the first series of experiments, we evaluated the effect of each of the local consistency techniques on backtracking and its common enhancement, backjumping. Surprizingly, although adaptive consistency has the best worst-case complexity bounds, we have found that it exhibits the worst performance, unless the constraint graph was very sparse. Directional arc consistency (followed by either backjumping or backtracking) and backjumping (without any pre-processing) outperformed all other techniques; moreover, the former dominated the latter in computationally intensive situations. The second series of experiments suggests that maximum cardinality and minimum width arc the best pre-ordering (i.e., static ordering) strategies, while dynamic search rearrangement is superior to all the preorderings studied
On the Efficiency of Backtracking Algorithms for Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems
International audienceThe question of tractable classes of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) has been studied for a long time, and is now a very active research domain. However, studies of tractable classes are typically very theoretical. They usually introduce classes of instances together with polynomial time algorithms for recognizing and solving them, and the algorithms can be used only for the new class. In this paper, we address the issue of tractable classes of CSPs from a different perspective. We investigate the complexity of classical, generic algorithms for solving CSPs (such as Forward Checking). We introduce a new parameter for measuring their complexity and derive new complexity bounds. By relating the complexity of CSP algorithms to graph-theoretic parameters, our analysis allows us to point at new tractable classes, which can be solved directly by the usual CSP algorithms in polynomial time, and without the need to recognize the classes in advance
A Tutorial on Clique Problems in Communications and Signal Processing
Since its first use by Euler on the problem of the seven bridges of
K\"onigsberg, graph theory has shown excellent abilities in solving and
unveiling the properties of multiple discrete optimization problems. The study
of the structure of some integer programs reveals equivalence with graph theory
problems making a large body of the literature readily available for solving
and characterizing the complexity of these problems. This tutorial presents a
framework for utilizing a particular graph theory problem, known as the clique
problem, for solving communications and signal processing problems. In
particular, the paper aims to illustrate the structural properties of integer
programs that can be formulated as clique problems through multiple examples in
communications and signal processing. To that end, the first part of the
tutorial provides various optimal and heuristic solutions for the maximum
clique, maximum weight clique, and -clique problems. The tutorial, further,
illustrates the use of the clique formulation through numerous contemporary
examples in communications and signal processing, mainly in maximum access for
non-orthogonal multiple access networks, throughput maximization using index
and instantly decodable network coding, collision-free radio frequency
identification networks, and resource allocation in cloud-radio access
networks. Finally, the tutorial sheds light on the recent advances of such
applications, and provides technical insights on ways of dealing with mixed
discrete-continuous optimization problems
Quantum-accelerated constraint programming
Constraint programming (CP) is a paradigm used to model and solve constraint
satisfaction and combinatorial optimization problems. In CP, problems are
modeled with constraints that describe acceptable solutions and solved with
backtracking tree search augmented with logical inference. In this paper, we
show how quantum algorithms can accelerate CP, at both the levels of inference
and search. Leveraging existing quantum algorithms, we introduce a
quantum-accelerated filtering algorithm for the global
constraint and discuss its applicability to a broader family of global
constraints with similar structure. We propose frameworks for the integration
of quantum filtering algorithms within both classical and quantum backtracking
search schemes, including a novel hybrid classical-quantum backtracking search
method. This work suggests that CP is a promising candidate application for
early fault-tolerant quantum computers and beyond.Comment: published in Quantu
A Decomposition Technique for Solving {Max-CSP}
International audienceThe objective of the Maximal Constraint Satisfaction Problem (Max-CSP) is to find an instantiation which minimizes the number of constraint violations in a constraint network. In this paper, inspired from the concept of inferred disjunctive constraints intro- duced by Freuder and Hubbe, we show that it is possible to exploit the arc-inconsistency counts, associated with each value of a net- work, in order to avoid exploring useless portions of the search space. The principle is to reason from the distance between the two best values in the domain of a variable, according to such counts. From this reasoning, we can build a decomposition technique which can be used throughout search in order to decompose the current prob- lem into easier sub-problems. Interestingly, this approach does not depend on the structure of the constraint graph, as it is usually pro- posed. Alternatively, we can dynamically post hard constraints that can be used locally to prune the search space. The practical interest of our approach is illustrated, using this alternative, with an experi- mentation based on a classical branch and bound algorithm, namely PFC-MRDAC
Choosing the root of the tree decomposition when solving WCSPs: preliminary results
In this paper we analyze the effect of selecting the root in a tree decomposition when using decomposition-based backtracking algorithms. We focus on optimization tasks for Graphical Models using the BTD algorithm. We show that the choice of the root typically has a dramatic effect in the solving performance. Then we investigate different simple measures to predict near optimal roots. Towards 40 years of constraint reasoning
Research on constraints started in the early 1970s. We are approaching 40 years since the beginning of this successful field, and it is an opportunity to revise what has been reached. This paper is a personal view of the accomplishments in this field. We summarize the main achievements along three dimensions: constraint solving, modelling and programming. We devote special attention to constraint solving, covering popular topics such as search, inference (especially arc consistency), combination of search and inference, symmetry exploitation, global constraints and extensions to the classical model.
