Study of optoelectronic switch for satellite-switched time-division multiple access
The use of optoelectronic switching for satellite switched time division multiple access will improve the isolation and reduce the crosstalk of an IF switch matrix. The results are presented of a study on optoelectronic switching. Tasks include literature search, system requirements study, candidate switching architecture analysis, and switch model optimization. The results show that the power divided and crossbar switching architectures are good candidates for an IF switch matrix
Signal Integrity Optimization of RF/Microwave Transmission Lines in Multilayer PCBs
While allowing for flexible trace routing and device miniaturization, multilayer printed circuit boards (PCB) suffer from performance issues at high frequency due to the impedance mismatch caused by vertical transitions. In this paper, a process for optimizing the high-speed performance of microstrip to stripline transitions in multilayer PCBs is demonstrated. This includes strategic tuning of via dimensions using time-domain reflectometry and an analysis of the use of shielding vias to prevent parasitic cavity resonance. Simulations of optimized 2-layer, 4-layer, and 6-layer microstrip to stripline transitions show a return loss of 20 dB up to 7 GHz. To demonstrate a useful microwave application, a planar filter with a passband of 4 GHz to 6 GHz is submerged 6-layers. The simulation shows that when paired with the optimized vertical transitions, the filter can maintain performance
Wideband and UWB antennas for wireless applications. A comprehensive review
A comprehensive review concerning the geometry, the manufacturing technologies, the materials, and the numerical techniques, adopted for the analysis and design of wideband and ultrawideband (UWB) antennas for wireless applications, is presented. Planar, printed, dielectric, and wearable antennas, achievable on laminate (rigid and flexible), and textile dielectric substrates are taken into account. The performances of small, low-profile, and dielectric resonator antennas are illustrated paying particular attention to the application areas concerning portable devices (mobile phones, tablets, glasses, laptops, wearable computers, etc.) and radio base stations. This information provides a guidance to the selection of the different antenna geometries in terms of bandwidth, gain, field polarization, time-domain response, dimensions, and materials useful for their realization and integration in modern communication systems
The Expanded Very Large Array
In almost 30 years of operation, the Very Large Array (VLA) has proved to be
a remarkably flexible and productive radio telescope. However, the basic
capabilities of the VLA have changed little since it was designed. A major
expansion utilizing modern technology is currently underway to improve the
capabilities of the VLA by at least an order of magnitude in both sensitivity
and in frequency coverage. The primary elements of the Expanded Very Large
Array (EVLA) project include new or upgraded receivers for continuous frequency
coverage from 1 to 50 GHz, new local oscillator, intermediate frequency, and
wide bandwidth data transmission systems to carry signals with 16 GHz total
bandwidth from each antenna, and a new digital correlator with the capability
to process this bandwidth with an unprecedented number of frequency channels
for an imaging array. Also included are a new monitor and control system and
new software that will provide telescope ease of use. Scheduled for completion
in 2012, the EVLA will provide the world research community with a flexible,
powerful, general-purpose telescope to address current and future astronomical
issues.Comment: Added journal reference: published in Proceedings of the IEEE,

Shielding and Radiation Characteristics of Cylindrical Layered Bianisotropic Structures
In this paper we propose an analytical study in the spectral domain of cylindrical layered structures filled with general bianisotropic media and fed by a 3D electric source. The integrated structure is characterized in terms of transmission matrices leading to an equivalent circuit representation of the whole multilayered structure. Within the framework of this two-port formalism, we present a new contribution to the computation of the Green's function arising in the analysis of multilayered conformal integrated antennas loaded with general bianisotropic materials. We also propose an analytical study of the shielding effectiveness of general bianisotropic materials located in multilayered, cylindrical configuration. The expression of the shielded fields sustained both by plane wave and arbitrary sources is obtained in a closed analytical form. Numerical results are also presented showing effects of electromagnetic parameters on radiation pattern, matching properties and radar cross section of the integrated structure
Properties and numerical solutions of dispersion curves in general isotropic waveguides
In this paper, some properties of dispersion curves in general isotropic piecewise homogeneous waveguides are rigorously derived. These properties are leveraged in a numerical implementation capable of determining the dispersion curves of such waveguides with cross-section materials that can be highly conductive (such as copper). In a numerical example, the influence of a lossy shielding conductor on the complex modes of a shielded dielectric image guide is investigated for the first time
Two Techniques for the Efficient Numerical Calculation of the Green's Functions for Planar Shielded Circuits and Antennas
In this paper we present new contributions to the
computation of the Green's functions arising in the analysis of mul-
tilayered shielded printed circuits and antennas. First the quasi-
static term of the spectral domain Green's functions is extracted
so that the convergence of the reminder dynamic modal series is
enhanced. Moreover, it is shown that by extracting a second-order
quasi-static term the convergence is further improved. In regard to
the quasi-static terms they are computed in the spatial domain by
numerically evaluating the associated spatial images series. Then a
new and efficient technique is developed for the summation of the
slowly convergent modal series. The technique can be viewed as
the application of the integration by parts technique to discrete se-
quences and greatly accelerates the convergence rate of the series
involved. It is shown that the new algorithm is numerically very
robust and leads to a drastic reduction in the computational ef-
fort and time usually required for the numerical evaluation of the
shielded Green's functions.Universidad Politécnica Federal de Lausann
Circuit model for mode conversion in coplanar waveguide asymmetric series-impedances
A new `circuit model' for converting between even and odd modes in asymmetric series impedances in the ground plane of a coplanar waveguide is presented. The model is based on the separation of modes into two input and two output ports. In contrast to previous work, it enables a quantitative analysis of the energy exchange between modes to be obtained.Peer Reviewe
Millimeter wave transmission systems and related devices
A survey was made of the state-of-the-art in millimeter (20 GHz to 300 GHz) wave transmission systems and related devices. The survey includes summaries of analytical studies and theoretical results that were obtained for various transmission line structures. This material was supplemented by further analysis where appropriate. The transmission line structures are evaluated in terms of electrical performance, ease of manufacture, usefulness for building other devices and compatibility with solid state devices. Descriptions of waveguide transmission lines which have commonly been used in the microwave frequency range are provided along with special attention given to the problems that these guides face when their use is extended into the millimeter wave range. Also, guides which have been introduced specifically to satisfy the requirements of millimeter wave transmission are discussed in detail
