    A decentralized metaheuristic approach applied to the FMS scheduling problem

    La programación de FMS ha sido uno de los temas más populares para los investigadores. Se han entregado varios enfoques para programar los FMS, incluidas las técnicas de simulación y los métodos analíticos. Las metaheurísticas descentralizadas pueden verse como una forma en que la población se divide en varias subpoblaciones, con el objetivo de reducir el tiempo de ejecución y el número de evaluaciones, debido a la separación del espacio de búsqueda. La descentralización es una ruta de investigación prominente en la programación, por lo que el costo de la computación se puede reducir y las soluciones se pueden encontrar más rápido, sin penalizar la función objetivo. En este proyecto, se propone una metaheurística descentralizada en el contexto de un problema de programación flexible del sistema de fabricación. La principal contribución de este proyecto es analizar otros tipos de división del espacio de búsqueda, particularmente aquellos asociados con el diseño físico del FMS. El desempeño del enfoque descentralizado se validará con los puntos de referencia de programación de FMS.FMS scheduling has been one of the most popular topics for researchers. A number of approaches have been delivered to schedule FMSs including simulation techniques and analytical methods. Decentralized metaheuristics can be seen as a way where the population is divided into several subpopulations, aiming to reduce the run time and the numbers of evaluation, due to the separation of the search space. Decentralization is a prominent research path in scheduling so the computing cost can be reduced and solutions can be found faster, without penalizing the objective function. In this project, a decentralized metaheuristic is proposed in the context of a flexible manufacturing system scheduling problem. The main contribution of this project is to analyze other types of search space division, particularly those associated with the physical layout of the FMS.     Agent-based distributed manufacturing scheduling: an ontological approach

    The purpose of this paper is the need for self-sequencing operation plans in autonomous agents. These allow resolution of combinatorial optimisation of a global schedule, which consists of the fixed process plan jobs and which requires operations offered by manufacturers. The proposed agent-based approach was adapted from the bio-inspired metaheuristic- particle swarm optimisation (PSO), where agents move towards the schedule with the best global makespan. The research has achieved a novel ontology-based optimisation algorithm to allow agents to schedule operations whilst cutting down on the duration of the computational analysis, as well as improving the performance extensibility amongst others. The novelty of the research is evidenced in the development of a synchronised data sharing system allowing better decision-making resources with intrinsic manufacturing intelligence. The multi-agent platform is built upon the Java Agent Development Environment (JADE) framework. The operation research case studies were used as benchmarks for the evaluation of the proposed model. The presented approach not only showed a practical use case of a decentralised manufacturing system, but also demonstrated near optimal makespans compared to the operational research benchmarks

    Approaches of production planning and control under Industry 4.0: A literature review

    Purpose: Industry 4.0 technologies significantly impact how production is planned, scheduled, and controlled. Literature provides different classifications of the tasks and functions of production planning and control (PPC) like the German Aachen PPC model. This research aims to identify and classify current Industry 4.0 approaches for planning and controlling production processes and to reveal researched and unexplored areas of the model. It extends a reduced version that has been published previously in Procedia Computer Science (Herrmann, Tackenberg, Padoano & Gamber, 2021) by presenting and discussing its results in more detail. Design/methodology/approach: In an exploratory literature review, we review and classify 48 publications on a full-text basis with the Aachen PPC model’s tasks and functions. Two cluster analyses reveal researched and unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model. Findings: We propose a cyber-physical PPC architecture, which incorporates current Industry 4.0 technologies, current optimization methods, optimization objectives, and disturbances relevant for realizing a PPC system in a smart factory. Current approaches mainly focus on production control using real-time information from the shop floor, part of in-house PPC. We discuss the different layers of the cyber-physical PPC architecture and propose future research directions for the unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model. Research limitations/implications: Limitations are the strong dependence of results on search terms used and the subjective eligibility assessment and assignment of publications to the Aachen PPC model. The selection of search terms and the texts’ interpretation is based on an individual’s assessment. The revelation of unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model might have a different outcome if the search term combination is parameterized differently.     Improving just-in-time delivery performance of IoT-enabled flexible manufacturing systems with AGV based material transportation

Autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) are driverless material handling systems used for transportation of pallets and line side supply of materials to provide flexibility and agility in shop-floor logistics. Scheduling of shop-floor logistics in such systems is a challenging task due to their complex nature associated with the multiple part types and alternate material transfer routings. This paper presents a decision support system capable of supporting shop-floor decision-making activities during the event of manufacturing disruptions by automatically adjusting both AGV and machine schedules in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs). The proposed system uses discrete event simulation (DES) models enhanced by the Internet-of-Things (IoT) enabled digital integration and employs a nonlinear mixed integer programming Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find near-optimal production schedules prioritising the just-in-time (JIT) material delivery performance and energy efficiency of the material transportation. The performance of the proposed system is tested on the Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics (IML) demonstrator at WMG, University of Warwick. The results showed that the developed system can find the near-optimal solutions for production schedules subjected to production anomalies in a negligible time, thereby supporting shop-floor decision-making activities effectively and rapidly

    Quantum algorithms for process parallel flexible job shop scheduling

    Flexible Job Shop Scheduling is one of the most difficult optimization problems known. In addition, modern production planning and control strategies require continuous and process-parallel optimization of machine allocation and processing sequences. Therefore, this paper presents a new method for process parallel Flexible Job Shop Scheduling using the concept of quantum computing based optimization. A scientific benchmark and the application to a realistic use-case demonstrates the good performance and practicability of this new approach. A managerial insight shows how the approach for process parallel flexible job shop scheduling can be integrated in existing production planning and control IT-infrastructure

    A human centred hybrid MAS and meta-heuristics based system for simultaneously supporting scheduling and plant layout adjustment

    Manufacturing activities and production control are constantly growing. Despite this, it is necessary to improve the increasing variety of scheduling and layout adjustments for dynamic and flexible responses in volatile environments with disruptions or failures. Faced with the lack of realistic and practical manufacturing scenarios, this approach allows simulating and solving the problem of job shop scheduling on a production system by taking advantage of genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm combined with the flexibility and robustness of a multi-agent system and dynamic rescheduling alternatives. Therefore, this hybrid decision support system intends to obtain optimized solutions and enable humans to interact with the system to properly adjust priorities or refine setups or solutions, in an interactive and user-friendly way.     Recent Research Trends in Genetic Algorithm Based Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problems

    Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSSP) is an extension of the classical Job Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP). The FJSSP is known to be NP-hard problem with regard to optimization and it is very difficult to find reasonably accurate solutions of the problem instances in a rational time. Extensive research has been carried out in this area especially over the span of the last 20 years in which the hybrid approaches involving Genetic Algorithm (GA) have gained the most popularity. Keeping in view this aspect, this article presents a comprehensive literature review of the FJSSPs solved using the GA. The survey is further extended by the inclusion of the hybrid GA (hGA) techniques used in the solution of the problem. This review will give readers an insight into use of certain parameters in their future research along with future research directions

    Towards self-organizing logistics in transportation:a literature review and typology

    Deploying self-organizing systems is a way to cope with the logistics sector's complex, dynamic, and stochastic nature. In such systems, automated decision-making and decentralized or distributed control structures are combined. Such control structures reduce the complexity of decision-making, require less computational effort, and are therefore faster, reducing the risk that changes during decision-making render the solution invalid. These benefits of self-organizing systems are of interest to many practitioners involved in solving real-world problems in the logistics sector. This study, therefore, identifies and classifies research related to self-organizing logistics (SOL) with a focus on transportation. SOL is an interdisciplinary study across many domains and relates to other concepts, such as agent-based systems, autonomous control, and decentral systems. Yet, few papers directly identify this as self-organization. Hence, we add to the existing literature by conducting a systematic literature review that provides insight into the field of SOL. The main contribution of this paper is two-fold: (i) based on the findings from the literature review, we identify and synthesize 15 characteristics of SOL in a typology, and (ii) we present a two-dimensional SOL framework alongside the axes of autonomy and cooperativity to position and contrast the broad range of literature, thereby creating order in the field of SOL and revealing promising research directions.</p
